HP Vivienne Tam Edition Mini 1000 hands-on

We’ve been somewhat charmed by the Vivienne Tam-styled HP Mini 1000 for some time now, but today on the floor at CES we got our first in-person look at the teeny fashion “clutch,” as it were, and have to say that in person it’s pretty good looking. The 10-incher’s got a fiery design plus a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom with 1GB of RAM, and an up to 60GB hard drive. We were particularly enamored with that silver mesh hinge. It’s defintely a fashionable item — and if that’s what you’re into it’s got a starting price of $699. Check a gallery of this gal (and it’s matching mouse!) after the break.

HP dv2 and dv3 hands-on

We just got a precious few minutes alone in a dark corner (or a huge, overlit booth) with HP’s 12.1-inch dv2 and the 13.3-inch dv3. They’re both slick little smudge-loving machines with handsome design sense and super glossy finishes. In case you’ve forgotten, the dv2 is the first netbook to have AMD’s Neo platform, and it boasts a 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 processo, up to 4GB of memory and a 500GB hard drive and starts at $699. The dv3 starts at $799 and comes in several configurations, including either a 2GHz Athlon X2 QL-62 or a 2.4GHz Turion X2 Ultra ZM-86, with ATI’s Radeon HD 3200 graphics, up to 8GB of DDR2 RAM, 160/250/320/400GB hard drive choices. They’re both available now, but check the gallery for some photographic evidence.

HP Firebird with Voodoo DNA hands-on

We just hit up HP’s booth to check out the new Firebird gaming rig, and it’s pretty slick looking, although it’s a lot bigger than we expected / hoped. The side panels are actually a cool translucent smoke finish, and the blue LED lighting might be the first classy gaming PC light kit we’ve ever seen. HP was demoing the Firebird with Left 4 Dead and Crysis, and the gamers on hand seemed pretty pleased — we’ll have see how the $1,799 machine’s 2.83GHz Core 2 Quad and dual NVIDIA GeForce 9800S graphics cards benchmark out when it’s released on February 1st. Check it all in the gallery!

HP’s TouchSmart all-in-one PC slips on its business socks

Can you imagine if Dunder Mifflin landed a contract with HP, and every single PC in The Office was replaced with a TouchSmart all-in-one? Yeah, hilarity would undoubtedly ensue. Nevertheless, the company has decided to push its dx9000 into the corporate arena. The business-class device is pre-loaded with Windows Vista Business 64, an Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, a 22-inch panel and a Virtual LAN driver. Outside of that, we can’t really see any major differences between the suited version and the consumer edition, but it’s all about marketing, anyway. Whip out the Pro Card next month, as each of these will set you back at least $1,399.

CES 2009: New HP Calculators

hpcalculator.jpg

Unless you’re a math prodigy, you probably need a calculator. HP is launching three new calculators at CES.

  • The HP SmartCalc 300s scientific calculator ($14.99) has a remarkably large, muli-pixel Textbook Format Display which allows students to see math problems as they look on paper. Students can use the navigation pad to move around within an expression to change it and watch the result. The calculator has 249 built-in functions.
  • The HP EasyCalc 100 ($7.99) will make a nice, light, compact calculator for a young student to carry in their backpacks. Pretty basic, but the bright blue color will make your student that much cooler.
  • The HP OfficeCalc 300 ($29.99) has a special “Check and Correct” function that allows users to edit any of their last 105 entries without having to re-enter the whole problem. The calculator also has built-in functions for common business calculations like tax and percentages. <./ul>

The calculators will be available in March through HP Home and Home Office Store, HP Small and Medium Business Store , and other retailers.

HP greets us with 13.3-inch Pavilion dv3 entertainment laptop

While you and HP can argue the rest of the night away about the most accurate moniker for its Pavilion dv2, the dv3 is definitely an ultraportable. The AMD-powered machine comes in a plethora of configurations with CPUs ranging from 2GHz (Athlon X2 QL-62) to 2.4GHz (Turion X2 Ultra ZM-86), ATI’s Radeon HD 3200 graphics, up to 8GB of DDR2 RAM, 160/250/320/400GB hard drive choices, WiFi / Bluetooth, a dual-layer DVD burner, gigabit Ethernet, an ExpressCard slot and a satisfactory array of ports including three USB 2.0 sockets, VGA, HDMI, eSATA combo (with a third USB port) and audio in / out. Users can select from a six or nine-cell battery, and there’s even an optional fingerprint reader if you’re unashamedly paranoid. Interested? It’s available today, junior, for $799 and up.

HP officially launches Firebird with Voodoo DNA

We figured it was destined for a CES release, and HP has confirmed that today’s the day. The hotly anticipated Firebird with Voodoo DNA has been properly introduced to the world, and within it will come an Intel Core 2 Quad CPU, twin NVIDIA GeForce 9800S graphics cards in an SLI configuration, hot-swappable 320GB hard drives (two of ’em) and an advanced thermal management system to keep things cool, calm, collected and quiet. As we’d heard, the rig will be available starting on January 9th for as little as $1,799 directly from Voodoo, while those too frightened to hand over their credit card information online can hold tight ’til it hits select retailers (read: Best Buy, most likely) on February 1st. Have a look at Rahul Sood and team gloating ad nauseum over this thing just after the break.

HP’s 12.1-inch Pavilion dv2 with Blu-ray — don’t call it a netbook

Here we’ve got the fruits of AMD’s new Neo platform: the Pavilion dv2 series of entertainment laptops. Starting at 3.8-pounds with a keyboard 8% short of full-sized, this 12.1-inch (1,280 x 800 pixels) ultra-portable features a 1.6GHz Athlon Neo MV-40 processor, up to 4GB of memory and 500GB of disk, optional 802.11n WiFi, and WWAN (Gobi) support. Now what if we told you that this 64-bit Vista Home Premium laptop (no need for the XP fallback here kids) measures less than an inch thick and can be configured with ATI Mobility Radeon HD3410 discrete graphics and an external Blu-ray player for $899 when it ships in March? More you say? Ok, there’s also Bluetooth, HDMI-out, an integrated webcam, and 3.5 to 4-hours of battery with prices set to start at $699. Isn’t CES wonderful?
