Samsung OmniaHD gets exhaustively inspected

Samsung’s OmniaHD may have just been announced (and touched), but already it’s seeing its first taste of critique. Russian site Mobile-Review had a chance to get said handset underneath its camera, and it also took the opportunity to blast out a few hard-to-interpret first impressions. Judging by images alone, we’d say this beauty has a lot going for it, but we tend to agree with the reviewer here in that Sammy may not move a lot of these to non-cellphone enthusiasts. You can check out a couple of shots after the break, but for a more extensive look at the phone itself, the UI and some machine-translated impressions, you know where to head.

An Engadget adventure with TeleNav’s G1 GPS software: hands-on, impressions, and video

After learning that TeleNav would be releasing dedicated turn-by-turn GPS navigation for one of our favorite devices — the G1 — we got more than a little excited. Thankfully, we’ve had a chance to take the software for a spin before its February 24th release date, and these are our findings.

The software is really snappy, snappier than a lot of dedicated GPS units we’ve used.
Finding satellites can be a major pain sometimes, and the signal can drop while you’re driving (see video), which could be a major headache if you’re on a trip and you really don’t know where you’re going.
The app doesn’t seem to eat up much space (it occupies 4MB on the device), so it appears to be pulling map data OTA. That’s a good thing if you’re worried about filling up your G1, but bad if you need info quickly or you’re not in a data-gettin’ spot.
We experienced a crash while it was fetching satellites. The software is still being tweaked from what TeleNav tells us, so we’re going to assume that won’t be an issue once it’s on the market.
The traffic, restaurant, and gas station services are top notch and pretty speedy (once it figures out where you are). Since a lot of GPS units aren’t pulling live data on surrounding businesses or traffic / weather info, this is a nice touch.
The speaker volume on the G1 is probably a bit quiet if you’re cranking on a highway — that could be an issue if you’re really relying on what Stephen King calls “the GPS voice.”
As expected, it’s a power hog, so plan on having an adapter in the car if you’re going to get any use out of this.

Windows 7 Beta in-depth impressions

We’ve covered a few tidbits of what the Windows 7 Beta has to offer, including the mess of machines we’ve installed it on, but we finally gathered together all our thoughts and impressions of the OS into one meaty pile of words and screencaps. Naturally, we’re working with a beta here, so things can absolutely get better (or worse), and Redmond might be hiding a feature or two in the wings — or for the inevitable SP1 — but we’d say Microsoft has really put its best foot forward here. Check out all our ramblings after the break.

Windows 7 install roundup

After resting up and settling into our post-CES golden desk chairs, team Engadget got busy at installing Windows 7 on pretty much anything they could find. Most installs went off without a hitch, and BSoDs were fairly few and far between. Palm Pre in-depth impressions, video, and huge hands-on gallery

We just sat down with Palm for a more in-depth look at the device, and here are our takeaways. First off, the software and hardware they’re showing right now aren’t the final versions. They’re updating and tweaking as we speak, so some of the features haven’t been implemented yet. Our take?
