Zune HD’s browser previewed, sounds just as sexy as the hardware

The folks over at CNET got a quick look at a recent build of the Zune HD, and the player seems to be getting rather close to a final product. Among praise for the hardware, video playback and a quite refined music player and music discovery experience, they found the Zune HD’s browser to be particularly excellent. It’s been built by the IE team, which bodes well for prospective Windows Mobile 6.5 users, and it’s apparently very comparable to the iPhone in features and speed. There’s pinch to zoom, accelerometer-based reorientation, and a good onscreen keyboard — no Flash, but from the pain it’s inflicting on the Android browsing experience, perhaps that’s a good thing.

Acer Timeline 8000 series arrives at Office Depot

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than a day after Acer announced the new Timeline 8000 series, the 14-inch AS4810T-8480 has popped up on an Office Depot shelf for $699. It’s not bad for the money — you’re getting a 1.4GHz Core Solo SU3500, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB disk, and eight hours of battery life — but we’d wait to buy until next week, when our tipster says it’ll be on sale for $549. Anyone planning to pick one up?

[Thanks, Mike]

More Nikon D300s sightings in lead up to rumored July 30th announcement

Nikon’s D300s seems to be having a hard time staying out of the viewfinder of other cameras, as the DSLR has popped up both in a nondescript close-up shot and in the hands of the president of a Nikon distributor at a Nikon Club gather in the Philippines. Same observations as last time, from what we can tell it’s got the same body as the D300 but with holes that suggest a mic input below the logo, although we’ve seen hints of a SD card slot in previous leaks. As for when we’ll be seeing the official debut, Nikon Rumors has a pretty good track record when it comes to these things, and it’s reporting with near-absolute certainty that the company has lined up a press conference that’ll take place either July 29th in the UK or 30th in Stockholm, Sweden, and a second date for August 4th in Sweden. The first event is expected to be the unveiling for D300s and D3000 and the second some new point and shoots — or it could be the other way around. Either way, with any luck all these uncertainties will work themselves out by the end of next week at the latest.

LG BL40 caught in the wild, given brief hands-on

We’ll admit, we’re jealous of this Sina Corporation reporter, who appears to have gotten some hands-on time with LG’s very sexy Chocolate BL40 and its 21:9 aspect ratio screen. There isn’t much said here aside from details we already knew and the occasional compliment on its form factor and display, but it is good to see this in the wild and not just in the FCC‘s secret lab facilities. Now if only we can get a better idea of its US 3G capabilities

HTC Click in the wild — Android on the cheap?

Not satisfied with your Android selection? Looking for something a little easier on the pocketbook, perhaps? Well, that’s cool, partner — look no further than the HTC Click. This thing hasn’t been announced, but rumors have been swirling for a few days now that the Click would be taking HTC’s Android ambitions decidedly downmarket, and like clockwork, we’ve now got a couple alleged pictures of it. We can’t verify the authenticity of this stuff, but we certainly don’t have any reason to doubt that it’s real — it’s pretty much what we’d envision a low-end HTC Android phone would look like. One open question would be the mystery surrounding that crazy pad arrangement where we’d normally expect a trackball to be — don’t get us wrong, we’re not married to the trackball by any stretch, but it’ll be interesting to see how well this works in practice. We don’t have any details on the Click’s release, but you can bet your sweet little green robot we’ll be passing that on just as soon as we get it.

LG’s BL40 Black Label phone captured in the wild — alongside a kid sibling

The more we see of LG’s latest Black Label handset — the mysterious BL40 — the more we want to touch it, play with it, talk on it, and put it (or, at least try to put it) in our pockets. Shots of the bizarre-yet-beautiful phone have appeared over on a German forum where we’re told the interface is S-Class-based, the screen is 800 x 345, and the camera is 5 megapixels strong with Schneider Kreuznach optics — all specs that fall in line with what we’ve heard so far — and there’s also apparently WiFi, an FM transmitter, and about 335MB of free onboard storage (easily rectified with a huge microSD card, of course). What has us even more intrigued, though, is a single picture in the bunch that shows the BL40 next to a smaller, stouter device with virtually identical industrial design. We have no idea what it is, but it looks like LG might be poised to roll out a whole series of phones in this new Black Label line — and which ones are Chocolate-branded is anyone’s guess at this point. See what we mean after the break or hit up the read link for all the pics.

[Thanks, Anthony]

Samsung’s YP-R1 spotted in the wild leering at kids

We like bubble-gum icons and ginger bread men holding “Touch Me!” signs as much as any predator. It’s just not the first motif that comes to mind when choosing an interface for what otherwise looks to be yet another mainstream digital media player. Perhaps Samsung’s YP-R1 is targeting 9-year old Korean girls — however, that sure looks like a brushed metal box to us, not teddy-bear taffeta affixed to a Mickey Mouse effigy as we’d expect. Otherwise, the YP-R1 is the same 2.6-inch touchscreen 400 x 260 pixel player with up to 32GB (€149 for 8GB model) of storage we’ve already seen only now with an expected September ship date, at least in France. One more shot after the break. What can we say — this is what you get when we hope to be surprised.

Verizon-branded Samsung Glyde 2 becomes star in Blurrycam photoshoot

Samsung’s launch of the Glyde was, well, far less than stellar — but hey, second time’s a charm, right? Shots have surfaced from HowardForums of what’s apparently the Glyde 2 / u960. Looks like we’ve got a more expansive keyboard that makes better use of space on the bottom slide out, some TouchWiz action on the screen, and unsurprisingly a nice, big Verizon logo just above the screen. Nope, we don’t have a release date or official confirmation of any sorts, so for now just hang tight on the farthest edge of your seat and feel free to browse the other shots of the device in the gallery below.

iriver E200 lands in the wild, might not have been worth the wait

Sure, we know that whenever we hear the word “aluminum” we’re supposed to go all weak in the knees, but iriver hasn’t really astounded us with this materials-tweaked rehash of the E100. Still, the OLED screen on the upcoming E200 has been bumped to 2.8-inches, so that’s kind of nice, and while the capacitive touch buttons aren’t a big win over the original rocker, at least the chassis seems thinner now. Check out the read link for some purported press shots that manage to be quite a bit more flattering.

Video: Palm Pre caught playing with GSM SIM in Vietnam

Having the Palm Pre on Sprint might be good for Americans driving their pick ’em up trucks down the CDMA data highway, but it doesn’t do Europeans (or Palm’s bottom line) any good over in the Old World. Now we’ve got video and images of a GSM-loving Palm Pre on the loose in Vietnam. Why ‘Nam? Easy, as workers gain more rights and higher wages in China, manufacturers of all our fancy consumer electronics are heading further south in search of cheap labor. While this doesn’t mean a damn thing regarding launch, it’s still good to see a functioning GSM Pre in the wild on the way to launch sometime before the end of the year, possibly sooner. Video after the break, as the saying goes.

[Thanks, Enzo]
