Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCVI: NOKLA 5800 XpressMusic is actually quite convincing on video

NOKLA strikes again! The Hong Kong-based doppelganger has concocted its own version of the 5800 XpressMusic, and it looks like they’ve spared no expense in copying the Finnish phonemaker’s handiwork, from the apparent use of Symbian S60 5th Edition to the wavy line-infused screen film. Vietnamese retailer L. A. digital‘s selling it for 1,900,000 VND, or about $107 US. Peep the video after the break to see this grade-A KIRF unboxed and toyed with.

Fake Nokia N97 is fake, tiny, buggy… and fake

What do you get if you stick a Nokia N97 in the dryer on high heat for an hour, rip the keyboard off with your bare hands, and replace S60 with a seemingly random stream of digital puke? Probably something akin to this little bugger, we’d reckon. Nothing worked, the display was wigging out, and we’d gotten it to the point where all we could do was draw red lines and watch random blocks of noise appear on screen — awesome by Keepin’ It Real Fake standards, yes, but not awesome if you’re actually trying to make a call. Our recommendation: don’t get any closer to this thing than the video you’re about to watch after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCV: NOKLA N97 drops two i’s, fools no one

Make no mistake, the Chinese-bound NOKLA N97 has neither Finnish origins nor any connection to a certain KIRF-friendly mobile OS. Specs include a large screen, an OK button, absolutely no slide-out keyboard, the words ‘N97’ in the top left corner, and an utter sense of despondency for those who actually pay money for this.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCIV: Nokia N83 is not a Nokia N83

While the shortly flaunted N83 never did amount to anything back in the day, we can safely say the device you see above is definitely not what the suits in Espoo had in mind. The touchscreen-based smartphone looks about as thick as an N95, though we can’t recall ever seeing a flavor of Symbian look anything like this. If you care to know, the phone sports a 400 x 240 resolution panel, 0.3 megapixel camera (ha!), dual SIM card slots, Bluetooth, FM radio module, about two to three hours of talk time and a 3.5 millimeter headphone jack. But hey, it’s only a buck ‘o five off-contract, or exactly the price of freedom according to certain puppets.

[Thanks, facelessloser]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXCIII: NCKLA E71 ls tcc gccd tc b3 tru3

Looking to get a Nokia E71 off contract for just over a hundred bucks? Yeah, that’s not gonna happen. But you can get this new NCKLA E71-2 for a mere $119 from the always accommodating folks at Solomobi, which should be just the ticket for folks concerned with neither brands nor functionality. You will still get a 2.1-inch QVGA touchscreen (or perhaps just a bundled pen), along with dual SIM card support, built-in Bluetooth, a 0.3 megapixel camera, a “stereo loud speaker,” and an included 256MB T-Flash card, with support for up to 2GB. Hit up the link below for a closer look, and the order form if you’re feeling like you need a little more KIRF in your life.

[Thanks, James]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CXC: TESO starts aping MacBook Air, quits early

Astoundingly enough, we haven’t actually seen a barrage of MacBook Air clones. Which is pretty remarkable given that, you know, it’s a Cupertino-designed product. With such a huge opportunity staring it in the face, China’s own TESO decided to see what it could whip up, and what it whipped sits pictured above. Iconic glossy white Apple coat? Check. Impossible to miss MBA styling? Check. One single lonely USB port? Check. Too bad it threw in some low rate keyboard and a mismatched battery cover on the underside — we were almost totally digging this. Sike.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXIX: meet the HTC A296 — and its gaping maw

We can totally picture this scenario at a bar, party, or Engadget reader meetup: “Hey, check out my Touch Diamond… oh, oh, wait, what’s this? Wha-BAM!” Out comes the numeric keypad, right out of nowhere, accompanied by a sickeningly bad S60 knockoff interface. Observers are stunned, dumbfounded; some even pass out in shock. Babies are crying, you can hear the forlorned wail of sirens in the background, and mass riots ensue. Put simply, the world was never designed to handle a fake Touch Diamond with a slide-out keypad — but you had to cross the streams, didn’t you? Jerk.

[Thanks, Jack G.]

Cool8800C handset says KIRF on the outside, “Player Games” on the inside

Cool8800C handset says KIRF on the outside,

Despite the incredible popularity of videogaming, there’s still a stigma attached by many to those who play them, thinking gamers fat or lazy and generally not good people to be around. For anyone sensitive to those criticisms, the Cool8800C offers an escape, looking like a perfectly normal imitation of Nokia’s 8800 on the outside, but, like a transformer that runs illegal ROMs, quickly changes into a portable gaming console in disguise. Flip it open to reveal a full D-pad and four input buttons plus a 2.8-inch WQVGA LCD for playing emulated NES games or watching analog TV, or snap it shut to make use of its VGA camera and 900/1800MHz GSM connection. No, it’s not likely this one is destined for release anywhere too far outside of China, meaning you, dear reader, are probably going to have to come out of the closet with that gaming addiction of yours already.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXVII: the Toshiba TG01 doesn’t deserve this kind of love

Toshiba definitely made some waves at MWC with the Snapdragon-powered TG01, but you’ll have to wait a while to get the real thing — or you can front like you’re VIP with the Venus JXD318 here, which cops all the style with none of the substance. You’ll have to keep your friends at a distance (and possibly a little drunk) to keep the illusion alive, however: Venus didn’t see fit to clone Tosh’s stripes UI, instead going with the sadly-ubiquitous “wannabe iPhone” look, and the whole thing is controlled by those five tiny side buttons, since it’s not a touchscreen. That’s a pretty weak effort, overall — come on, KIRFers, you can do better.

Keepin’ it real fake, CeBIT edition: Dancing Like The Stars

We just can’t visit a trade show and not scope out at least one KIRF. It’s just not possible. Here in Hannover, we happened upon a rather unusual one in a booth selling all sorts of DVDs to resellers willing to buy absolute rubbish and attempt to flip it. Apparently, Dancing Like The Stars is the long-tenured, very fake version of the show we Americans know best as Dancing With The Stars. A subtle difference, sure, but does this man above look anything like The Woz? No, no he does not. Not even at 800 percent magnification.
