Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXVI: the Vaino not-so-ultraportable

You know, it was just another busy Wednesday here in the Engadget compound until this guy came across our screens and greatly brightened our day. Bearing the appellation that the Vaio P’s highly fashionable media campaign has thus far only hinted at, the “Vaino” is a 10.2-inch, 1.6GHz Atom-powered ultraportable also-ran that, sadly, will not be making it to these shores any time soon.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXV: the world-renowned GiPhone F5

Whoever put together GiPhone F5 seems to have done a pretty good job of mimicking the iPhone’s UI, but other than that the deets are rather sketchy. This bad boy seems to be a 3G handset with a capacitive 3.2-inch multitouch screen, Bluetooth, “kinds of games,” and up to 16GB internal memory. Sounds wonderful, sure, but don’t give up your HiPhone just yet — we’re still trying to figure out where this one is available, and at what price. Video after the break.

Meizu M8 defies the odds and officially goes on sale – again

Word on the street has it that the Meizu’s M8 — that vaporous iPhone killer from the east — is now officially on sale, as of February 18. For real. Wait, you ask — wasn’t it available last week sometime? Well, yes and no. Apparently, the unit we’ve seen making the rounds was a beta version — if you slapped down your $440-ish dollars on that one, you got something with “a fair amount of problems to be ironed out,” according to DAP Review. The site, whose Chinese-to-English translator is apparently functioning better than ours, goes on to point out that while the test units had WiFi enabled, the final production version does not. A strange decision, sure, but this is a tale fraught with strange decisions. And danger. And excitement and glamor. By the way — we just hit up the official Meizu site, and the 16GB version of this device is “out of stock” — probably due to the rapturous reception the unit’s received all over the world.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXIV: NOKLA E81 is a dash of this, a dash of that

No, friends — what you see above isn’t a poor spy spot of an unannounced handset sure to be unveiled in just hours at Mobile World Congress. And yes, that’s despite the fact that there is still room for an E81 in Nokia’s ever-expanding lineup. In reality, this shoddy impostor is some sort of NOKLA, which appears to be a distasteful combination of XpressMusic, the N79 and the 6208 classic (among others, we imagine). The good news is that it sports dual SIM slots, a quad-band GSM radio and a 2.8-inch touchscreen. The bad worse news is that you probably won’t even be able to read the menus after dropping $86.50 and bringing this home.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXIII: WebXpress just a “Music” and “5800” shy of greatness

Here lately, we’ve been pretty impressed with just how awesome some of these Chinese knockoffs have been. In fact, we were beginning to wonder if the bona fide manufacturers weren’t in cahoots with some of these low-class acts. Thanks to China Grabber, we’re being reacquainted with the garbage that we once knew and loved, as the WebXpress handset is about as pathetic a rip of the 5800 XpressMusic as you could ever hope to see. Reportedly, it’s packing a 3-inch QVGA LCD, quad-band GSM radio, dual SIM slots, a 1.3 megapixel camera, video recorder, e-book reader and even some form of “health management” software. For $149.99, we’re almost tempted to order one just to see about the latter. Almost.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXII: HKC Touch clone sports Android looks at a WinMo price

The folks at “HKC” are back on the scene with the Imobile V413 handset. This Touch-esque KIRF boasts a dual WinMo 6.1 / Android OS — and we’re not entirely sure what this means. Other HKC phones have claimed compatibility with both operating systems, and we must admit that the screenshot does look pretty legit. Compared to the for real Touch, this thing appears to have some pretty OK specs, including: a 2.8-inch touchscreen, GPS, WiFi, a 2 megapixel camera and support for audio and video playback. Well played, Imobile. Your move, HTC. Available for $410, or in lots of 50 for $398 each.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXI: Sumsang Omnia can’t fool anyone

Oh, the horror! You know, Samsung’s Omnia isn’t terribly unique, but we never thought we’d see it knocked off and disrespected like this. Clearly created for use on China Mobile (and by fools who don’t actually inspect the devices they buy), the Sumsang Omnia is a GSM smartphone that sports a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, an MP3 player, a 13 megapixel camera (right…), USB connectivity, a couple of games, a microSD card slot and a sure-to-be-counterfeit version of Windows Mobile running the show. Of course, this abomination will only set you back a buck twenty, and hey — at least this version comes with dual SIM slots!

[Thanks, Derek]

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXX: It’s a Zune! It’s an iPod! It’s a spoof!

Simply aping one device at a time has just become too easy for the cloning labs in the backwoods of China, as evidenced by the two-for-one produced here by QQ. The K805 does its best Zune and iPod impersonation, and amazingly, it does so at the same time. The all too familiar click wheel is there, yet so is the rectangular design first made famous by the cats in Redmond. For those looking for the worst of both worlds, you’ll be interested in knowing that this here player features a 2.4-inch 320 x 240 resolution display, support for a plethora of files, USB 2.0 connectivity and a microSD card slot for loading up your favorite EMF jams. We aren’t clued in on a price, but do yourself a favor and pretend you never actually wanted to know.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXIX: AURA clone loses a vowel and a lot of class

Keepin' it real fake, part CLXXIX: AURA clone loses a vowel and a lot of class

Despite finding it incredibly luscious to behold, we realize not everyone can afford to drop $2,000 on a piece of pocket jewelery like the Motorola AURA — ourselves sadly included. Regardless, we would never advise anyone to go the KIRF route, and that includes the RicT-007 AVRA. It looks to offer something of the etched beauty of Moto’s choice handset but lacks the exclusivity, cherry wood packaging, and, we presume, the solid feel of the real thing. Yes that 750 yuan price (about $100) is mighty tempting, but resist, fair readers, resist.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXVIII: Canon doesn’t suck edition

You know what Canon doesn’t make? Right, Vacuum cleaners. Obvious to us but according to the site English Russian, a large Russian electronics supplier recently bought what they believed to be genuine Canon-made Vacuum cleaners. Why not, after all, that logo slapped all over the manuals and device is a straight rip from the Japanese company. The KIRF-co even has the audacity to host a Russian site registered to Gold Space Inc. at www.canon-electonics.com (the official Canon Electronics site is canon-elec.co.jp) which, ambient music aside, is nothing but a portal into an empty consumer abyss. A call to the company’s New York support number results in an “invalid number” recording. Surpising.
