Monster sues Fanny Wang, purveyor of fine knockoff headphones

Monster Cable’s reign of legal terror has resulted in several things over the years — a tiff with the Chicago Bears over the “Monsters of the Midway” nickname, a lawsuit against a minigolf company, and eventually even a hard ban on the pages of Engadget — but we can’t say we ever expected the target of a Monster lawsuit to try and use the case for cheap free publicity. Well, surprises come in all forms: the delightfully-named Fanny Wang is now proudly proclaiming that it’s being sued for copying Monster’s Beats headphones and trying to score some free good press — even though it appears that Fanny’s headphones are indeed a fairly close copy of Beats. (Just check the image above.)

To give you an idea of the ridiculousness at work, Fanny’s presently hosting a copy of the Beats design patent and Monster’s complaint on its own website, right next to a rebuttal of the charges. Fanny claims its headphones have different packaging and minor design differences such that “no reasonable consumer would likely confuse the two,” which we suppose is arguably true — but we’d also point out that Fanny’s original press release proudly proclaims that “the same sound engineer who designed the Beats by Dr. Dre acoustics tackled the Fanny Wang collection.” Copy, coincidence, or crafty PR strategy? You be the judge… for now.

Keepin’ it real fake: iPhone 5 provides foresight to a falsified future (video)

Of course you knew this was coming, you probably just didn’t expect it so soon. If Apple keeps up with its usual schedule, we don’t expect an iPhone 4 successor to rear its head until summer 2011, but already some KIRF scientists are making forward-looking projections and produced what it thinks might be the KIRF iPhone to go tête-à-tête with the presumed iPhone 5. Resolution’s apparently low, but it does its best to make up for it with dual SIM capabilities, WiFi, Bluetooth, a microSD slot, built-in camera with flash, an all-too familiar UI — all at a price guaranteed to assuage regret: about 700 yuan (US $106). The future is now, why wait? Video after the break.

No matter how many we see, we never cease to be amazed by some of the KIRFs out there. Take this Droid X, for instance, which doesn’t even bother with a name like “Motorolo Foid X,” and even goes so far as to include some legitimate-looking Verizon branding to back up its nearly spot-on appearance. The real kicker, however, is that the KIRFers behind the device have decided to ditch Android in favor of Windows Mobile 6.5 for reasons unknown to us. Don’t believe us? Check it out in action in the video after the break, and look for the device itself to set you back around $244.

If you were going to make a “mini” version of something else you’d probably want it to be significantly smaller. However, this “i9000 Mini” smartphone, cheekily adorned with both Samsung and Galaxy S branding, isn’t any more svelte than the phone it is most certainly trying to be. If our eyes don’t deceive us it’s even fatter, though the capacitive touchscreen is indeed a half-inch smaller, down to 3.5-inches, and rather than being wide VGA it is instead half VGA — doing with a measly 320 x 480 pixels. And no, it sure isn’t AMOLED. Other specs include a five megapixel camera, 512MB of ROM and RAM, and dual SIM support. Roll with this 1,480 yuan (about $200) phone and you’ll be rolling with Android 2.1, but the manufacturers promise it’ll be updated to 2.2 in just a few weeks. If you can’t trust a company that steals another company’s design, logo, and trademarks, who can you trust?

Keepin’ it real fake: ‘MacBook Pro’ runs ‘OS X,’ dodges questions on ‘legitimacy’

Oh, sure — we’ve seen a litany of knockoff MacBook Pro units, but how’s about one that actually ships with OS X? As the level of nerve skyrockets towards infinity, an unnamed manufacturer in an unnamed section of China seems to be hawking a lookalike MBP with Snow Leopard onboard — a feat that even Psystar couldn’t achieve for long. As the story goes, around $466 buys you a 14-inch machine with a paltry 1.66GHz Atom D510 processor, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and NVIDIA’s Ion 2 graphics platform. Oh, and a glowing Apple logo on the lid. Unfortunately, the dodgy specifications list seems somewhat reluctant to “admit” that “OS X” is actually loaded on, but it’s there. Trust us. We think.

Keepin’ it real fake: PSP Phone features NES emulator, cognitive dissonance

This is not the first KIRF PSP Phone we’ve seen, but recent news of the actual, long-awaited device (you heard it here first, folks!) makes the Unmei Q5’s appearance in the stalls of Shenzhen all the more timely. What will your hard earned yuan will get you? How about a 3.5-inch touchscreen, front and rear cameras, dual SIM card slots, an NES emulator, 3.5mm audio jack, and a mini-USB port — all crammed into the shell of a PSP Go? Available in black or white, this bad boy has been spotted for 399 CNY, or about $60. We just hope the real handset looks this good!

Keepin’ it real fake: iPod nano doesn’t need a logo, thank you

To be honest, this took a little longer than expected. The above faux iPod nano is a pretty decent copy, lookswise, anyway. While we don’t know its name or full specifications, we do know that it comes in both 1.5 and 1.8-inch touchscreen varieties (presumably resistive). It apparently has both an external speaker and an SD card reader. We don’t know where you’ll ever find one or how much it’s likely to cost, but if you do track these down, we’ll take one in that gray color, please.

KIRFy iPad adapter adds HDMI output, probably balks at DRM’d material

You know that iPad Dock Connector to VGA Adapter that you wasted money on? Yeah, turns out there’s probably a superior alternative available in the wilds of China… well, aside from the fact that it probably lacks an internal authentication chip needed to play back most protected content. Noosy’s iPad HDMI output adapter is fairly simple in design — it plugs into the 30-pin Dock Connector that’s on modern iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices, and then allows 720p content to flow directly over HDMI. We’re guessing there’s just a VGA-to-HDMI converter wrapped inside a familiar package, but we definitely like where this is headed. There’s nary a word on how much this will cost you (or what street corner you need to visit in order to find one), but here’s hoping the engineers in Cupertino are paying attention to what consumers are really after.

Keepin’ it real fake: Magic Mouse and iPhone converge into iPhonc

Do you dream at night? Do you stare at your ceiling pondering questions that no other Earthling could possibly ponder? Contrary to popular belief, you aren’t actually alone in this nightmare, and we too have wondered what would happen to our universe if a Magic Mouse and iPhone collided. Look up. Now down. Now back up again. That greenish, devilish device you see above is the iPhonc, a “KIRF of all KIRFs,” if you will. It’s hard to pinpoint who exactly thought to shove a dumbphone into the body of a Magic Mouse, but in some strange way, they’ve managed to make our souls smile. Best of all? Even the source here admits that it’s meaningless to wonder over the specifications and price, noting that the shell alone should attract sufficient attention. Makes the fading of Meizu a little easier to handle, you know?
