Keepin’ it real fake: N8 available now, only not from Nokia

Well, it was bound to happen: a flagship device released as a KIRF (for the second time) well ahead of its official launch. Unfortunately, that’s what happens when you delay a product that already leaked months in advance. The $99.20 “N8-00” might share its name and stylings with Nokia’s imminent Symbian flagship but that’s where the similarities end. This Chinese N8 packs a 3.3-inch touchscreen (resistive, no doubt), a quad-band GSM radio, pair of VGA cameras (ha!), 2GB of MicroSD blah blah blah… hey, let’s be honest, the specs don’t really matter do they? This “Nseries” device, like all KIRFs, will be sold to poseurs who want to look the part before quickly discarding it for the next trend. Picture of the backside after the break.

Keepin’ it real fake: phoney Armani handset borrows some of that Samsung glamor

When we reviewed the Samsung Omnia II, we forgot to mention one major drawback: the lack of Giorgio Armani branding. Luckily the KIRFmeisters of Shenzhen have picked up where the original manufacturer dropped the ball. And they threw in a QWERTY keyboard to boot! No word on price or availability of the KIRF Samsung Omnia Pro Giorgio, but that’s probably for the best. And yes, it has dual SIM cards.

Keepin’ it real fake: the Shanshui P72 is the oversized, XP-running iPhone you’ve always secretly wanted

A true iPhone KIRF running Windows XP may still be the stuff of dreams — crazy, fevered dreams — but it looks like we now have the next best thing: the iPhone-ish Shanshui P72. Boasting a 7-inch WVGA screen, this MID-sized device packs a 1.2GHz VIA C7-M processor, 1GB of RAM, 16GB or 32GB of storage, WiFi and 3G connectivity, built-in GPS, and no less than three USB ports, which will let you attach a keyboard and mouse for an authentic Windows XP experience. Keepin’ it real fake: HTC HD, too

If you’re going to rip off one of the more memorable Windows Mobile devices ever made, you’d think you’d want to at least clone its most notable feature — but seriously, what do we know about the KIRF business? Yeah, well, this little number manufactured by a firm doing business as “iHTC” (no relation to HTC, we’re sure) looks an awful lot like the HD2, but lacks that all-important 4.3-inch display, instead trading down for a more pedestrian 3.6-inch unit. On the upside, it’s still WVGA and packs the latest and greatest Windows Mobile 6.5.3 (if “latest and greatest” really applies there) plus a 5 megapixel autofocus cam — not bad specs for a device that eats copyrights for breakfast. Seems you can hunt one of these puppies down for about 1,580 yuan ($231), so start saving and packing for your Chinese adventure — and in the meantime, follow the break for a comprehensive video demo of the finest technology iHTC has to offer.

Keepin’ it real fake: GiPhone F98 is the KIRFiest next gen iPhone KIRF to ever KIRF

It’s been nearly a month since a China Grabber employee drunkenly left his experimental prototype next gen GiPhone at a Sushi Bar in Shenzhen, where it was found and sold to Shanzai.com for several thousand Yuan — and the gadget world hasn’t been the same since. The GiPhone F98 features, as all of these KIRFs do, dual SIM cards, an FM Radio, an “iPhone style” UI, WiFi, Bluetooth, and compatibility with 850MHz, 900MHz, 1800MHz, and 1900MHz GSM. And it’s one of the thickest phones we’ve seen in a long time! (See for yourself after the break.) Available now for $150, if you dare.

Keepin’ it real fake: Nokia’s N8 beaten to release by lackluster knockoff

All together now: “Already?” KIRFers overseas are getting quicker and quicker with their knockoffs, and at this point, it’s safe to say that you’ll have an easier time wrapping your hands around a commendable Nokia N8 impostor than the real-deal. The outside looks an awful lot like Nokia’s first major Symbian^3-based handset, but the specifications are decidedly lackluster: you’ll get a 400 x 240 resolution display (3.2-inches), an MP4 player, FM radio, Bluetooth, webcam and a battery that’ll last three to five hours. Glaringly absent is a 12 megapixel camera, WiFi module and built-in 3G support, but it’s not like that stuff really matters — after all, what else would you expect for an unsubsidized price of just $105? With all the hype surrounding the next-gen iPhone, we can understand if your “iPhome 3G” feels a little, well, old hat. That’s why we were as excited as you must be to see this iPhone 4 KIRF. Featuring a relatively svelte form factor, stereo speakers, USB port, a removable battery, and dual SIM card slot, the only real let down is the 3.2-inch screen. That, and we’re sure that the UI will have a general, KIRFish nature that will appeal to very few of us. Get a closer look after the break!

Keepin’ it real fake: MacBook Pro knockoff rocks Ion 2, thinks itself fly

We’ve stumbled across any number of MacBook Air KIRFs, but it’s not often we see a worthy representation of Cupertino’s heftier model. Never underestimate Shenzhen. This “Dragonfly QT Pro” not only features a familiar aluminum alloy shell, the 14-inch, 1366 x 768 netbook’s also got Ion 2 switchable graphics ahead of its Acer and ASUS cousins. A 1.66GHz Atom D410 and 1GB of memory help pump out 1080p video while keeping case temperatures at a lap-happy 36 degrees Celsius, while a 160GB hard drive, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and HDMI (take that, Mini DisplayPort) round out a 4.2 pound, roughly $3000 RMB (about $440) package. Shame it only gets 2 hours of battery life, eh?

The Engadget Show: Inside the gadget markets of China, part two – Shenzhen

You may have already seen the large range of gadgets — both old and new — in Hong Kong, but the small presence of KIRFs there does make things a tad less exciting. Want more? Turns out all you need to do is grab a Chinese visa (or a border pass if you’re a Hong Kong or Macau resident), take a train ride up north and you’ll reach Shenzhen for all the KIRFs you’ve ever wanted. In this second part of our China tour series, we’ll be showing you around the Luohu Commercial City and the Huaqiangbei gadget heaven — don’t worry, there are still many genuine products there for you little angels. Oh, and we also popped into a Meizu store for some hands-on time with the notorious M8. Enjoy.
