Best Buy slaps Blue Label on Sony and Toshiba laptops, packed to the exhaust vents with extras

Best Buy's new Blue Label laptops

That fancy new Toshiba E305 we checked out back in January is up for pre-order now, and it’s brought along a friend from Sony (the VPCSC1AFM/S) to join the Best Buy-exclusive Blue Label party. In terms of specs the two machines are practically identical — both boast a 2.3GHz Core i5-2410M, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hybrid hard disk, a Blu-ray drive, WiDi (and an adapter for your TV from Netgear), and a WiMAX radio. The big differences between the two PCs are price and size, with the 14-inch Toshiba weighing in just under 5 pounds and costing $900, while the Sony squeezes in under the 4-pound mark for $950. Considering the wealth of extras, including a year of Kaspersky anti-virus, 90 days of Geek Squad support, and an extended two-year warranty, the Blue Label machines are actually a pretty good bang for your buck and cost about $100 less than comparably equipped systems from their respective makers. If you don’t care about things like Blu-ray or WiMAX, and distrust the Geek Squad though, you could save yourself some cash by skipping on these pre-configured models and going with a customized rig from Sony or Toshiba directly. PR after the break.

Paper alloy takes shape for biodegradable consumer electronics (write your own origami joke)

So you’re anxiously awaiting your biodegradable car and your biodegradable 3D glasses, waiting for the day when everything you own can return to the loam from which it sprang. But, what about the computer you’re using this very moment? It’s probably made of non-green materials like injection-molded plastic, and slapping some bamboo on it isn’t fooling anyone. Design and engineering firm PEGA comes to your rescue with a new composite material made of recycled paper and polypropylene alloy. Lightweight, durable, and inexpensive to produce, it acts just like typical ABS plastic — and it even comes in the classic soul-killing beige. Maybe this is what Apple’s been waiting for.

Toshiba’s Honeycomb tablet to be dubbed ANT, start at $450?

Feel free to ingest this with a healthy helping of salt for now, but if a spate of Newegg product listings are to be believed, Toshiba’s heretofore unnamed Honeycomb tablet will boast a tremendously unflattering moniker: ANT. Priced at $449.99, $499.99 and $579.99, the Tegra 2-powered slate is seemingly dubbed ANT-100, ANT-102 and ANT-104. Each one includes Android 3.0, a 10.1-inch panel (1280 x 800) and NVIDIA silicon, with the extra dollars on the latter two changing that 8GB of internal storage to 16GB or 32GB. There’s still no hard release date promised, but surely the shot above is proof that the day is near, right? Right?

HP tries to sneak CFast slot by us in EliteBook 8560w

HP EliteBook 8560w

HP must have thought it could sneak this one by us — and it would have succeeded too, if it wasn’t for those meddling tipsters. A close examination of the recently announced EliteBook 8560w’s press shot reveals it has a CFast slot, an interesting tidbit not mentioned in the release or the spec sheet. This is, to our knowledge, the first notebook to ship with a slot for the updated CompactFlash format, though the lack of cameras and other devices using the medium makes it a somewhat superfluous feature at the moment. Still, with transfer rates significantly faster than current CompactFlash cards and twice that of SDXC cards (with room to grow), we assume its only a matter of time before Nikon and Canon slap these bad boys in a few high-end shooters. Closeup shot after the break.

[Thanks, Reznov]

Apple patent application reveals more projector possiblities, including a projector-equipped laptop

We’ve already seen a few patent applications that suggest Apple is at least mulling over the idea of using projectors for one purpose or another, and another newly published one has now offered a bit more fodder for speculation. Described as a “display system having coherent and incoherent light sources,” the patent application suggests that the projector would be laser-based, and be both cheaper and more power efficient than conventional light projectors, while also overcoming the so-called “speckle” problem sometimes seen with laser projectors. What’s perhaps most interesting, however, is that the patent application also suggests the projector could be integrated into other devices — in fact, one of the claims specifically mentions a laptop with an integrated projector, as artfully illustrated above.

MSI’s Fusion-powered X370 laptop gets $579 price tag, hits Amazon and Newegg

Our story about MSI’s X370 ultraportable getting a dose of AMD Fusion ended on a cliffhanger — the company stopped short of revealing just how much the thing would cost. Well, now we have our answer: this 13.4-incher comes with a $599 price tag and is up for grabs on Newegg. (Amazon already cut the price to $579, but isn’t shipping it just yet.) For the money, that sub-$600 sticker includes AMD’s new Zacate E-350 APU, 4GB of RAM, integrated Radeon HD 6310 graphics, a 500GB hard drive, a 4-in-1 memory card reader, HDMI and VGA output, a 1.3 megapixel webcam, and an 8-cell battery that MSI claims can last up to ten hours. While it earlier seemed that consumers would get their pick of hard drives and batteries, it’s available in just one configuration for now — not that you would have been tempted to downgrade to a 4-cell, anyway.

Samsung’s 11.6-inch Series 9 lands an Amazon pre-order at $1,149

Samsung may have priced its slinky new laptop at a buck under $1,200, but you know Amazon likes to dance to its own tune. The online retailer is now listing the 11.6-inch Series 9 at $1,149, saving you a nice bit of change, though it hasn’t yet been willing to disclose a release date. The specs should be familiar by now, an Intel Core i3-380UM takes center stage, surrounded by 2GB of RAM, a 64GB SSD, 802.11b/g/n wireless, Bluetooth 3.0, a 5680mAh battery, and a 1366 x 768 display with 400 nits of brightness. Conceptual ‘Fujitsu Lifebook X2’ folds into quarters, makes regular notebooks look lame

Being that doomsday and the robot apocalypse are nearing quickly, now seems an appropriate time to gaze into the future of laptop design, right? Well, maybe those anomalies aren’t actually around the corner, but you know us — we always fancy a warm cup of concept tea. Designer Park Hyun Jin over at Yanko recently posted some renders of the Fujitsu Lifebook X2, a laptop-like invention of his fervent imagination that allows for two orientations thanks to its four folds. The design features a full QWERTY keyboard that can be used when the notebook is folded out in full, as well as a half-folded option with an onscreen keyboard, pictured above. Naturally, we’d love for this concept design to become a reality, but we can’t wrap our brains around the seam between the two screens. Well actually, we could probably get used to it.

Alienware’s M18x: a beautiful beast for the gamer on the go

A sneak peek from the Great White North showed us Alienware’s new mobile gaming flagship, but now we’ve got the real specs and a whole gaggle of pretty pics for you to drool over. It turns out the M18x has a massive 18.4-inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display, an Intel Core i7 Extreme chip overclocked to a frag-tastic 4GHz, your choice of AMD CrossFireX or NVIDIA SLI graphics, up to 32GB of DDR3 RAM, a 3D-capable HDMI 1.4 port, WirelessHD for the cable-averse crowd, and five macro-programmable keys wrapped in a otherworldly anodized aluminum shell. Alienware M14x manuals leak out, confirm the gaming notebook once and for all

Just yesterday Dell’s leaky website poured out details about the upcoming Alienware M11x R3 gaming notebook, and it didn’t take long for its larger brother to follow suit — today, we’ve got the full user and factory service manuals for Alienware’s M14x, confirming a number of juicy rumors. Unfortunately, there’s no mention of a Full HD 1080p LCD screen for the 14-inch visitor from another planet, but there will apparently be both 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 options on tap, both driven by NVIDIA’s GeForce GT555M switchable Optimus graphics with up to 3GB of dedicated memory. Of course, you’ll also find Intel’s latest Core i5 and i7 Sandy Bridge CPUs and up to 8GB of RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, SATA 6Gbps and optional 3G / 4G connectivity, optional WirelessHD, a two megapixel webcam, and even a 8-cell, 63Whr battery to make portable gaming vaguely possible. Hit up our source link to see how Dell put this machine together — and how you can tear it apart — while we wait for the company to finally make the smokin’ hot notebook official, and let us know how just badly our wallets will feel after it rips their innards out.
