AMD might have let the Radeon HD 6500M and 6300M out a little early, but today marks the formal launch of its new, second-generation DirectX 11 mobile chips, the HD 6000M family. The new arrivals are the HD 6900M / 6800M in the gaming-centric high-end (offering up to 1.3 teraFLOPS of compute power), the HD 6700M / 6600M in the upper midrange, and the HD 6400M to provide mainstream users with all the discrete graphics loving that they desire. The 6000M range introduces AMD’s new HD3D hocus pocus, which will allow apps, games and other media to present themselves in 3D to you — provided devs care to make them so — while EyeSpeed is a marketing name for a set of technologies designed to improve video streaming and gaming performance by taking on more tasks with the GPU. You’ll care about that if you’re a big online media consumer and you’ll also want to know that AMD has an exclusive on hardware acceleration for DivX video. It’s no secret that Toshiba‘s got a thing for glasses-free 3D displays and that it’s been putting together 3D concept laptops based on the technology, but according to Toshiba’s director of product marketing Phil Osako, the company could be ready to bring a 3D laptop sans spectacles to market by the end of the year. Sounds good to us, but it’s a pretty ambitious claim, considering the demo unit Toshiba’s bringing to CES, which we got to see a few weeks ago, is very rough around the edges. As you can see in the images below, it had a very large red, chiseled contraption strapped to its lid — although, we do have to say it gives it a rather Iron Man-esq aesthetic. All that aside, the Qosmio laptop packs some pretty innovative 3D technologies — not only does it have two parallax 3D LCD, but its webcam has a special eye-tracking feature that knows when you shift your position. The goal of that is to provide “dead-zone free stereoscopic 3D images” or better viewing angles, but we can’t really say we experienced that — while the 3D clips looked, well three-dee straight on, slightly tilting to the left or right threw off the effect and we were stuck watching some blurry content. Like we said, the concept is really just a concept at this point, but it will certainly be interesting to watch what Toshiba is able to improve and put out by the end of 2011.

First it was the Adamo, now it’s the Envy. HP has joined Dell in deeply discounting its aging 13-inch ultrathin, though unlike its Round Rock competitor, it hasn’t bothered to give it any spec bumps. Consequently, even with this interest-building $450 rebate, the Envy 13 loses out to the Adamo 13 in a straight spec fight — a 1.6GHz CPU, 3GB of DDR3 RAM and a 5400RPM hard drive are all either slower or smaller than Dell’s offering — but it does still have a pair of aces up its sleeve to get latecomers to part with their cash. Those include an external SuperMulti DVD rewriter and a discrete ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 GPU with 512MB of dedicated memory. Sure, it’s not much, but then neither is the new price.

If there’s one thing we appreciate more than pixel density, it’s slim bezels. LG, a traditional enemy of unsightly frames, is today staking its claim for having the world’s thinnest bezel on a laptop with the new Xnote P210. This 12.5-inch machine is said to fit within the footprint of an 11.6-incher, but before you start throwing insults like “netbook” around the place, do take note it has a dual-core Core i5-470UM processor inside — capable of running between 1.33GHz and 1.86GHz — 4GB of RAM, and a 320GB HDD. The LED-backlit display’s resolution isn’t specified beyond a note saying it’s “HD,” while Windows 7 Home Premium is the predictable OS of choice. Look for the P210 to hit Korea in February for around 1.3 million won (about $1,135), but don’t hold your breath on it coming Stateside for anything other than a flying trade show visit.

It’s been awhile since we’ve heard any news from the Adamo camp, but for those looking to blow a bit of that Santa cash on something thin and light, the timing here couldn’t possibly be better. Nearly 1.5 years after the 13-inch ultraportable was let loose — for $1,999 and up, no less — a new low-cost configuration has emerged at Dell’s website. These days, $899 gets you a 0.65-inch thick machine, complete with a 13.4-inch WLED display (1366 x 768 resolution), 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo SL9600 processor, a 64-bit copy of Windows 7 Home Premium and 4GB of DDR3-800 memory. You’ll also get a 128GB SSD, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and a 40 WHr Lithium Polymer battery, and if you’re down for spending a bit more, you can grab an internal mobile broadband module as well. Or, you know, you could wait and see what kind of treasures CES brings. Your call.
