Intel Core i5-580M speeding toward a fall release at 2.66GHz?

The Core i5-540M is still quite rare on the ground, but we’re hearing word that Intel is already prepping the assembly line for its successor. A new Core i5-580M has been dug up by the sleuths at Notebook Italia, who say it’ll run at a default 2.66GHz and ramp up to 3.33GHz via Turbo Boost when needed. Those numbers compare favorably to the 2.53GHz and 3.06GHz of the 540M, and if Intel and company get their timing right, the 580M should be stealing some of that Core i7 thunder just in time for the back to school shopping rush. Won’t hear any complaining from us if that turns out to be the case.

Toshiba ships Core i7-equipped Satellite P505 gaming laptop, all 18.4-inches of it

Looking for the most gargantuan laptop money can buy? How’s about the biggest laptop that the least amount of money can buy? Toshiba’s Satellite P505 — a machine we spotted briefly at CES this year — has now been put on sale over at Microsoft’s own webstore, complete with an 18.4-inch LCD (1,680 x 945), a 1.6GHz Core i7-720QM processor, 4GB of DDR3 memory, 500GB SATA hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, a DVD SuperMulti drive, ExpressCard slot, integrated memory card reader, NVIDIA’s GeForce 310M (512MB), four USB 2.0 sockets and a beastly 12-cell Li-ion battery. Best of all, you can pop in a coupon (see the links below for details) in order to score this behemoth for $689, or just $687.95 more than freedom. Hop on past the break if you need an explanation.

Update: Seems that code down there has expired — anyone got an alternate?

WiMAX-equipped ThinkPad Mini 10 visits FCC

Submitted in late April and available for public consumption today, here’s an exciting little FCC disclosure from Lenovo. It’s that mysterious ThinkPad Mini 10 creature we’ve been seeing prowling the Australian outback, this time showing up as a test mule for Lenovo’s new WiMAX module. The antennae in this submission are likely headed for retail inside things like the almost identical X100e and the rest of Lenovo’s US line. We’re liking this trend of seeing netbooks and subnotebooks leaving the factory with WiMAX already integrated, but do beware the price premium that’ll come attached. Lenovo already asks for $150 extra to stick a Gobi 2000 3G chip in a ThinkPad X100e, we don’t expect the 4G option to be any less dear, but we can at least expect it soon(ish).

[Thanks, Vance]

HP expands laptop battery recall, again

HP's expands latptop battery recall, againWe haven’t heard any tales of exploding batteries in quite some time, and we’re sure that’s in large part thanks to proactive battery recalls like the one HP has been running since about this time last year. However, it’s a little disconcerting that this recall keeps getting expanded. For the second time a new group of laptops are being added to the pile, entries from the Pavilion, Compaq Presario, and other lines manufactured between August of 2007 and May of 2008. We have the complete chart included below. If you’re included the bad news is that your aging laptop could explode and wipe out your entire neighborhood at any moment. But, the good news is… free replacement battery!

Acer launches 11.6-inch Aspire Timeline 1825PT netvertible

If you’ve suddenly found yourself torn between a tablet and netbook, Acer wants you to know you’re not alone. It also wants you to know there are options, one of which would benefit said company’s bottom line should you choose to accept. The new Aspire Timeline 1825PT is an 11.6-inch netvertible at heart, boasting a swivel-screen multitouch panel (1,366 x 768 resolution), up to 8GB of DDR3 RAM, a 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor, integrated Intel GMA 4500MHD graphics, HDMI / VGA outputs, a 250GB or 320GB hard drive, integrated media card slot, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, a VGA webcam, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, gigabit Ethernet and a 6-cell battery that can reportedly last up to eight solid hours under ideal conditions (read: no chance). There’s even a multitouch trackpad and gobs of bloatware to really cap things off, with color options including diamond black, sapphire blue and ruby red — all of which sound seductively awesome. A 64-bit copy of Windows 7 Home Premium gets you going, but it’ll take at least £599.99 ($886) to get one headed your way.

HP slips out 14-inch G42t laptop with Core i3 and i5 options

HP’s been pushing out laptops like it’s going out of style, but for some reason or another, the G42t never seemed to make it into any of the outfit’s recent press releases. No matter, as the aforesaid machine has just surfaced on the company’s website, and it’s not only for sale, it’s available for customization. Users can equip the 14-inch laptop with a Core i3 or i5 processor, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, a hard drive ranging from 250GB to 640GB, integrated Intel graphics, a 1,366 x 768 resolution panel and a built-in webcam. There’s also WiFi, optional Bluetooth, a SuperMulti DVD burner (or a Blu-ray drive, if you’d prefer), 6-cell Li-ion battery and plenty of bloatware to keep you busy right out of the box. Best of all, this guy gets going at just $549.99, so there’s at least a slim chance you won’t shatter the bank while indulging yourself.

[Thanks, Jorgos]

HP’s Envy 17 and refreshed Pavilion laptops now shipping to stylish, on the go sorts

HP's Envy 17 and refreshed Pavillion line now shipping to stylish, on the go sorts

That sexy HP Envy 17 that became official a few weeks back? It’s up for grabs, starting at $1,399 in its base configuration with a Core i5 processor, but getting much higher if you start tickling those option boxes in the customization screens. No word on the Envy 14 yet, but the 13 is still available… for now. Also on offer is the refreshed Pavilion line, the dm4, dv5, dv6, and dv7, showing off their new metal casings and swirly paint jobs. The dv6 starts at $699 while the others predictably go on up from there.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Apple Refreshes Macbook With 10-Hour Battery

Appel Macbook (Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz)

So Apple didn’t update the Macbook Air, but it did rejuvenate its cheapest laptop with faster parts and a bigger battery.

Today, Apple updated the Macbook with what basically are the same parts as the base model Macbook Pro 13-inch, except with less system memory (2GB of DDR3). Instead of the Core i3 or Core i5 processors that everyone else is using, Apple elected to stay with the Core 2 Duos. Clock speeds ramp up to 2.4 GHz (from 2.26 GHz), but more importantly, the Core 2 Duo platform allows the Macbook to keep Nvidia’s integrated graphics. You get a huge graphics bump with the latest GeForce 320M graphics chip, based on the scores I got with the MBP Pro 13-inch.
A bigger battery is included with your purchase, now at 63.5 WH (from 58 WH), and Apple claims that 10 hours off the AC adapter is what it got while Web surfing. As with the previous version, the Macbook starts at $999 and ships within 24 hours

MSI brings Core i5, GeForce 310M to 15.6-inch CX623 multimedia laptop

Nah, it’s no Core i5 ULV-powered X series, but MSI’s latest does use a Core i5 processor and does have an X in the model name. Mind-blowing, right? The outfit’s latest 15.6-incher is a multimedia powerhouse, humming along with a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce 310M GPU, twin DDR3 RAM slots (plenty of space for 4GB), a 1,366 x 768 resolution display, six-cell battery, 1.3 megapixel webcam and a pair of stereo speakers. There’s also a 320GB or 500GB SATA hard drive, 4-in-1 card reader, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, HDMI / VGA outputs, twin USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA socket, audio in / out, Ethernet and a “film print coating” over the palm rest area to minimize wear. Mum’s the word on a price and release date, but we suspect we’ll know a bit more on both of those points when we touch down at Computex in a fortnight.
