Intel making ‘important announcement’ today — a Nokia netbook / MID?

Possible big news on the way later today. According to Bloomberg, Intel’s very own Mr. MID, Anand Chandrasekher, will announce Nokia as a new customer of its mobile processors. This is important because Nokia is a long time friend of ARM and Intel by its own admission can’t currently compete with ARM when it comes to the ultra-low power consumption requirements of smartphones. So whatever Nokia’s got cooking will presumably be running on Intel’s upcoming Moorestown MID platform or its ultra-low power Medfield silicon targeting mainstream smartphones in 2011. On the other hand, Nokia’s CEO already expressed interest in entering the laptop race with Intel or the ARM-based Snapdragon rumored to be at the core. But if this announcement results in yet another Atom-based netbook, well, good luck with that Nokia.

MacBook Pro update rights the wrong, enables 3Gbps SATA transfers

We’ve seriously no idea why Apple didn’t just ship all of the June 2009 MacBook Pro units with the SATA 3Gbps specification enabled, but at least it caved to the chorus of complaints and enabled it today via a firmware update. MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7, as it’s called in Software Update, weighs in at just 3.35MB and requires OS X 10.5.7 to be installed. According to Apple, the update “addresses an issue reported by a small number of customers using drives based on the SATA 3Gbps specification with the June 2009 MacBook Pro.” Of course, it goes on to say that it still doesn’t support the use of drives that can take advantage of such speeds, but at least you have the option now of taking matters into your own hands and upgrading to a non-hamstrung SSD should you choose.

ASUS Eee PC 1005HA up for pre-order on Amazon

ASUS’ Eee PC 1005HA (the cooler, younger brother of the 1008HA) impressed us when we first caught a peep of it in the wild. Internally, the two netbooks are identical — but the 1005HA boasts a user-replaceable battery, and leaves out the recessed ports and port doors (which we found to be slightly annoying — though attractive — in our review of the 1008HA). Well, it’s up on Amazon for pre-order now, which means we might be seeing this one sooner rather than later. For now, it’s priced at $349.99, but we’ll see if that price holds when it’s actually available.

Dell Latitude Z series laptop leaked, sized up in pictures

With nary another word in terms of specs or details, one lucky forum goer at NotebookReview has posted what looks to be pics of a new, as of yet unannounced Dell Latitude Z Series laptop. Not much to say at the moment, aside from the obvious Adamo influence, but we did spot a biometric fingerprint scanner, an oddly-placed ethernet port in the back, and Windows / Intel Centrino stickers. Earlier in the thread another person, albeit lacking any physical proof of owning one, chimed in to say it’d have a 15-inch matte screen, Core 2 Duo processor, webcam with facial recognition, and DisplayPort, with a scheduled release a week from today. Judging by the ports in the pics, it’s definitely a thin one — could we be seeing Dell finally dip its toes into the CULV market? With any luck, we’ll be hearing more about this soon.

HP Mini 100 available for online ordering, Vivienne Tam safe and sound

All you crazy kids keepin’ an eye on the HP Mini 110 are in for a real treat. The company is now listing the machine as available for ordering on its website, superseding the Mini 1000 (don’t worry, fashionistas — the Vivienne Tam model is still available, at least for the time being). As reported previously, these guys are priced at $279.99 (Mi Edition) or $329.99 (XP Edition), with the 6-cell battery option adding $40 to the price, and an Intel Atom N280 CPU costing an additional $25. And the Broadcom Crystal HD accelerator? Look for it next month.

Samsung intros 17.3-inch R720 multimedia laptop

There ain’t too many options when it comes to finding that special 17.3-inch laptop in your life, but we’re thrilled to see at least one more PC maker putting those oddly sized LCD panels to use. Quietly announced across the pond, the R720 is the natural successor to last summer’s smash hit, the R710. Said machine sports a LED-backlit panel, ATI’s Mobility Radeon HD 4650 graphics, stereo speakers (with “subwoofer”), a full-sized numeric keypad next to the QWERTY layout, four USB 2.0 sockets and Windows Vista Home Premium running the show. Sadly, it seems as if we’ll have to wait patiently on more details (price, release, HDD size, etc.), but we get the idea this one’s headed for UK stores first, anyway.
