Palm Pre launching no earlier than May 16 according to leaked doc?

We’ve been made privy to some Sprint planning documentation that implies that the carrier is looking to get all its Pre ducks in a row by May 16, which would suggest that there’s no way in hell it’s launching any earlier than that. Ultimately, that could mean we’re looking at a launch on the 17th — a Sunday, as Sprint launches often are — or any time after that, but since Palm continues to reaffirm its first half commitment, we’d say that we’re now down to a window between 5/17 and 6/30. Awesome.

Sprint puts a vacation blackout on May — Palm Pre launch likely?

Well, we’re circling in, folks. Hot on the heels of learning that Sprint employees have the Palm Pre in hand for training, there’s word from all sides that Sprint has put a vacation blackout on the month of May for retail employees, which would seem to imply that the Pre will be launched sometime in there. We saw similar vacation freezes on AT&T’s end for both iPhone launches, and those ended up fairly accurate. We haven’t seen this memo personally, or threatened any Sprint employees for confirmation with shivs fashioned out of Samsung Instincts yet, so we’ll keep an eye out for any other information to confirm or deny. Meanwhile, check out this Pre holster!

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

T-Mobile announces April 21st “private launch event” in NYC

Well well well. Well. What do we have here? Apparently the cats and kittens over at T-Mobile have something special planned on Tuesday, April 21st. We’ve just gotten a very brief email letting us know that something was going down, but without any other detail. Obviously our gadget-alarms started clanging, and the way we see it we’ve only got a few things to get excited about. Will we see the launch of Cupcake? Could this be the official US unveiling of the Magic? Or perhaps we’ll finally get to see the new Sidekick which just hit the FCC. Look — anything is possible, but whatever happens, we’ll be there. What do you guys think is in store?

600k DSis sold opening weekend in US and Europe

It wasn’t the most hyped launch ever, but Nintendo’s DSi had itself a fine little opening weekend, with 300,000 units moving in the US and Europe each. Not bad at all, considering that the first DS only sold 500,000 units in its first entire week in the US — we’re guessing the DSi will manage to meet that mark when the final numbers all come in. So, anyone out there pick one up?

Samsung Mondi WiMAX hands-on with video

While we caught this at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, Samsung officially launched its WiMAX / WiFi Mondi at CTIA today. Samsung’s SWD-M100 MID runs Windows Mobile — and we have to say that it looks really polished — with the transitions between homescreen panels being particularly stunning — check the vid to see it in action. While thin, the popout lower lip keypad is a tough thing to use, the width of the keypad itself and the positioning of the d-pad make it all seem a bit awkward to use. We do like the 4.3-inch display, though suspect it may prove to be a tad power hungry once this gets a little more real on Clear‘s WiMAX network. Follow on for a short vid and a handful of pics of us playing with this big glossy thing.

Tough luck, guys — the secret‘s out. LG’s long rumored Rumor 2 has finally launched exclusively on Sprint, bringing with it a slide-out QWERTY keypad, QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, a removable backplate and your choice of Black Titanium and Vibrant Blue shells. As for availability, you can find the Black Titanium at Sprint’s website on March 15th, while the Vibrant Blue edition won’t hit until March 29th. If you’re web-averse, you’ll have to wait until April 19th for it to filter out to all Sprint retail channels before dropping your $49.99 (on contract).

Nintendo’s DSi planning a European tour ahead of US release

Nintendo's DSi planning a European tour ahead of US release

If you’re still feeling all giddy about getting your mitts on a DSi here in the States on April 5th, prepare for a bit of a downer. Nintendo Europe has just announced gamers within its territories be getting the multi-screen multi-cam wonder a full two days earlier, on April 3rd, but hasn’t said how much they’ll be paying for the privilege. Also, while we’re stuck with black and a rather cheeky baby blue, Euro gamers will be getting the more stolid/boring color selection of black or white, which may be good or bad depending on your monochromatic tendencies. Regardless, whether you’re domestic or abroad, you’d best get your pre-orders in now.

Update: LostProphet commented to say that it’s showing up for pre-order abroad at £149.99, or about $214. That’s quite a premium for a few days worth of exclusivity.

Nintendo DSi to launch in North America on April 5th

According to the good chaps over at Joystiq (and, you know, Nintendo), you can get your grubby mitts all over the DSi in North America come April 5th. The system will launch for $169.99, will include all the goodies you’ve been reading about — like those dual cameras and downloadable content called DSiWare (starting at the totally mysterious price point of 200 DSi Points). The handhelds will come in either blue or black, and while we can’t quite explain why they’ve omitted white, we can be pretty sure we’ll see some more colors join the fray before too long. Anyhow, this is Nintendo, so remember: it’s never too early to get in line.

Samsung Memoir hitting T-Mobile USA on February 25 for $249.99

At this point, it’s tough to say the Memoir wasn’t official with a straight face, but Samsung and T-Mobile have jointly disclosed all (er, most) of the remaining details that were so sorely missing here at Mobile World Congress. The 8 megapixel handset will boast a Xenon flash, CMOS auto focus and 16x digital zoom, not to mention a full touchscreen and a sophisticated camera menu that enables users to adjust the brightness and flash, change the default destination of images, select a timer and zoom in or out. Moreover, the video recording and TV-out features should provide even more joy in the lives of multimedia lovers, and the blink detection, face detection, anti-shake and geotagging inclusions should shake off any remaining pundits who say there’s not a “real camera” in here. As anticipated, the phone will launch exclusively on T-Mobile USA in just ten days (February 25, if you’re too excited for math), though there’s still no mention of a price. Procrastinate much?

Update: Boom, pricing — $249.99 on a two-year contract with a $50 mail-in rebate. Not the cheapest thing we’ve ever seen, but you get what you pay for, yeah?
