BenQ goes for the kitchen sink approach with new line of 16:9 monitors

Never one to go half-way with a product line, BenQ has now filled out its G-series of LCD monitors with a full complement of 16:9 LCDs, including both 1080p and 720p models. Those range from the 23.6-inch G2410HD and 24-inch G2411HD/HDA, which each boast an Advanced Motion Accelerator that BenQ says improves response time and brightness, to the decidedly smaller 15.6-inch G610HDA and 18.5-inch G910HD/HDA models, which use a dual lamp system to conserve energy depending on the level of brightness needed. Complete specs on each model are otherwise a bit light, but you can apparently expect dynamic contrast ratios ranging from 10,000:1 to 40,000:1, response times of 2ms to 5ms, and DVI, HDMI ports, and built-in speakers on a few of ’em. No word on prices either, but they’ll apparently start hitting China this month, with a “worldwide” rollout planned for later in the year.

Albatron 22-inch multi-touch LCD becoming a reality in March

Albatron 22-inch multi-touch LCD becoming a reality in March

After Microsoft announced Windows 7 would natively support multi-touch displays, Albatron was one of the first to show off a prototype panel intended to take advantage of that functionality. Seven months later the company is finally letting you know when you’ll be able to buy one, and is also taking another opportunity to talk up its optical touch tech, which features sensors embedded into the bezel rather than the surface itself — in theory resulting in a brighter image and greater durability. The company is planning to release its 21.5-inch LCD in March, and, while provided details are few, we know that the display will support 120Hz, have DVI and VGA inputs, and will relay touch information to the PC over USB. We also know that the company’s motto is “captures the spirit of the Albatross,” which we’re going to go ahead and assume is a reference to Monty Python and not Baudelaire.

LG Display CEO says that LCD panel prices have “reached a bottom”

The company may not exactly have the final say on the matter, but LG Display CEO Kwon Young-soo seems confident that the market for LCD panels is finally set to turn around, with him saying today that, “the good news is that we’ve reached a bottom,” and that, “TV panel prices will likely stop the downward trend and recover.” LG doesn’t see things completely turning around overnight, however, and in the meantime it says it’ll be pouring more than $400 million into a new production line designed to produce high-end LTPS LCD displays for mobile devices, which it apparently expects will be a more profitable area, and help it turn that frown upside down once more.

Looks like Acer‘s expanding its small form factor PC family once more, and this time it’s the Aspire X1700 slotting itself in between the X3200 and X1200. Measuring in at 10.4- x 4- x 14.4-inches, the mini PC includes a 2.4GHz Intel dual-core E2200 CPU, 4GB of DDR2 RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 7100 graphics, nine (yes, as in the number prior to ten) USB 2.0 sockets, a multi-card reader, 640GB SATA II hard drive, dual-layer DVD writer, an HDMI socket, eSATA port and a USB keyboard / mouse combo to boot. In somewhat related news, Acer is also choosing today to introduce the H233H 23-inch display, which touts a 1,920 x 1,080 native resolution, 5-millisecond response time, 300 nits of brightness, 160-degree viewing angles, twin 1.5-watt speakers and a maximum contrast ratio of 40,000:1. LCD vs Plasma in 2009

Engadget HD has an easily-digestible look at the current status of LCD and plasma displays in the industry, what with market share falling fast for the latter, sizes rising for the former, and many manufacturers dropping support for plasma altogether. The verdict? Well, you’ll have to click on over to find out! Don’t you just hate that?

Eizo debuts pair of new color-accurate FlexScan LCDs

Apart from the occasional foray into unconventional remote controls, Eizo is best known for its often-specialized monitors, and the company has returned to its stomping grounds with its latest announcement: a pair of new FlexScan LCDs that promise to cover 95% of the Adobe RGB color space (and 92% of the NTSC color gamut). Those include the FlexScan S2242W-H and FlexScan S2232W-E, both of which are 22-inchers, with the former boasting a full 1920×1200 resolution and the latter dialing things back slightly to 1680×1050. Otherwise, the two seem to be mostly identical, with each sporting a 1,200:1 contrast ratio, a 12ms black-to-white response time, VGA and HDCP-capable DVI ports (but no HDMI), a pair of USB ports, and pair of built-in 0.5W speakers. No indication of a release over here, as usual, but folks in Japan will be able to pick ’em up next month for ¥69,800 yen and ¥62,800 (or roughly $780 and $700).

Philips introduces ultra widescreen Cinema 21:9 LCD TV

Last July, we took a look at whether or not ultra widescreen HDTVs could eventually become a reality. Fast forward half a year and change, and here we have Philips answering that with a resounding “sure, why not?” The Cinema 21:9 is said to be the planet’s first cinema-proportioned LCD TV, and of course, it’ll also incorporate Ambilight technology around the borders. We’ll be frank — we had our doubts upon seeing the lackluster website linked below that this thing was even real, but Philips itself confirmed to us that the panel will be shipping this Spring in Germany, Belgium, the UK and France. We’re also told that a full site will launch on January 29th, though no pricing details (nor a US release date) were mentioned. Our one and only wish? That this thing would’ve been displayed at CES last week.
