Sony’s leaked Google TV prices were wrong, says alleged insider

If the discovery of down-to-the-cent leaked prices for Sony’s Google TVs sounded too good to be true, you might have been partially right — the publication that reported that the sets would range from $1,299 to $1,899 has now backed away from those figures. Sony Insider says that though its original prices seemed legit, the website’s spooks inside Sony now claim they’ll actually cost less when they hit the market, though the screen sizes and model numbers were apparently on the money. We don’t really feel inclined to trust the new anonymous sources any more than the original anonymous sources, so we’ll just leave it at that so as not to get you excited — if they’re cheaper after all, we’ll celebrate, and if not we’ll be forewarned.

HTC HD7 (aka Schubert) pictured in glorious monochrome, headed to T-Mobile for $200?

We’ve seen O2 Germany’s HTC Schubert and a Chinese HD3, but here’s a giant Windows Phone 7 device with “T-Mobile” clearly painted on the upper right-hand corner of the screen. TmoNews got these alleged images of the HTC HD7 from their usual anonymous source along with a partial spec sheet, which actually claims slightly different dimensions for the phone and double the amount of flash memory (16GB in all) than we heard before. Different strokes for different folks, or is one of these two rumors totally off? You’ll probably want to keep both possibilities in mind before considering this last tidbit from the very same source: the phone will reportedly cost $199 on a two-year contract. Or you could just wait for us to blow out all the Windows Phone 7 details tomorrow, of course.

Update: Enjoying the look of this phone from your vantage point in Great Britain, are you? You might be able to pick one up as well — 911sniper apparently found a O2 UK version of the HTC Schubert’s ROM, as reported by Pocketnow below.

UK carrier’s roadmap points to October 21 release for Windows Phone 7, over 2,000 apps at launch

The whole world and his neighbor’s dog may already know when Windows Phone 7 will be announced, but when are the actual phones going to hit actual shelves? If you’re in the US, that time still looks to be a month away, but the UK release window has just been narrowed down from late October to a single, albeit still speculative, date: October 21. Our tipster forwards the above snapshot from a Three UK document showing a “Windows 7Phone” nestled in between the BlackBerry Torch and Samsung Europa. Its Super AMOLED display tells us we’re definitely looking at a Samsung handset, while the 4-inch diagonal suggests it’ll be the Cetus (SGH-i916/7). This sheet of revelation also finally gives us a hint as to the number of apps WP7 will start off with, enumerating them at “over 2,000 at launch.” We don’t know why Microsoft’s been so shy about that number — 2,000 good apps are more than enough.

HTC Mondrian render teases AT&T U-verse Mobile for Windows Phone 7, looks fatter than last time

Not that the connection between AT&T and HTC’s Mondrian WP7 handset was under much doubt anymore, but here’s the first image purporting to show the carrier-branded version of the device. The render is provided by 911sniper, whose long and distinguished record of leaking legit HTC ROMs leads us to believe it is indeed the real deal. It’s curious then to juxtapose the somewhat bulky Mondrian on show here against the press imagery recently unearthed by BestBoyZ — are we still looking at the same device? Our eyeball geometry would suggest not. Anyway, there’s not too long left to go until Microsoft tidies this alphabet soup of codenames up for us, and until then we suggest just enjoying that tantalizing tile titled AT&T U-verse Mobile.

[Thanks, Kamal]

Droid 2 Global (and specs) make brief cameo on Motorola’s website

There and gone again: a Droid’s tale. Looks like Motorola‘s website had a temporary hiccup on the site, and out its proverbial mouth came a listing and some specs for the Droid 2 Global — which, as you might gather from a name like that, appears to be a Droid 2 with Quad Band antenna for world use (sound familiar?). The site also lists a 1.2GHz processor a redesigned QWERTY keyboard, and a host of key words for the business demographic. Or rather, it listed such things, past tense, as the information has now been pulled. No pictures were ever posted, but if we were betting folk, we’d wager a name like that and a call-out to “redesigned keyboard” means everything else is just as you’d expect.

AT&T U-verse customers can use Xbox 360 as a set-top box starting November 7th

If you’d given up hope of using your 360 to watch AT&T U-Verse after over three years of waiting, we wouldn’t think any less of you; but for those still holding on to the dream of one less set-top box under the TV, this latest tip says the wait is all but over. As you can see from the internal memo above, a so-called Wired Release will roll out to AT&T U-Verse customers next Sunday, and it’ll bring the long awaited feature with it (though you’ll have to wait until November 7th for that particular aspect). This means AT&T U-verse customer’s Xbox 360 will have a Dashboard app, and when launched, it’ll let it function exactly like any other U-verse set-top. The only major catch is that it can’t be the only set-top — you’ll need at least one DVR at another TV in the house to enjoy one of the four HD streams that could be funneled into your home. But hey, at least it’s on the way, right?

Update: A second anonymous tipster has chimed in with some interesting slides — looks like your Xbox will need a hard drive!

Sony’s Google TV screen sizes and prices leak?

While its controller may have a button layout that only an Atari Jaguar apologist could love (), Sony’s Google TV set itself is still something intriguing, if only because of the missing pieces of the puzzle set to be revealed October 12th. Or now, perhaps, if this Sony Insider leak proves true. According to the site, four models will initially be introduced: NSX-24GT1, NSX-32GT1, NSX-40GT1, and NSX-46GT1 — which, as you may have surmised, correspond to 24-, 32-, 40-, and 46-inch sets. While no price is known for the littlest of the quartet, the others are reportedly equipped with respective $1299.99, $1499.99, and $1899.99 price tags. The lowest of those three is about $300 more than BRAVIA EX710, the most expensive Sony 32-incher right now. Three Benjamins could also net you the Logitech Revue and the freedom to hook it up to any TV you wanted, so if these prices are true, let’s hope there’s some wiggle room for the retailer.

Samsung i8700 put through 13-minute video exposé

You know how those Korean electronics makers are. One does something — such as a Windows Phone 7 leak — and the other has to go and try to match or better the feat. Samsung has today easily outdone LG, whose Optimus 7 only revealed some press pics, with a thorough video exposition of its i8700 WP7 handset. We’re hearing references to this phone being called the Omnia 7, which makes sense, but is at present not something we’ve been able to verify. So what might you enjoy in this video treat? It’s mostly a jog through now familiar territory, though we do get to witness the phone taking a picture — the camera software and performance are two of the less well known aspects of WP7 handsets. There’s also what looks like a custom Samsung hub, which includes weather and stock price updates, all of which is topped off with that signature WP7 responsiveness and ridiculously deep blacks that we’ve grown used to with recent Samsung handsets. Video after the break.

LG E900 (aka Optimus 7) finds its official press pictures unofficially leaked

We love a nice pre-release leak as much as the next tech blog, but come on, aren’t you starting to feel sorry for these Windows Phone 7 guys? By the time Steve Ballmer takes the New York stage on Monday, we‘ll be more familiar with the stuff he’ll be showing off than the big Microsoft boss himself. Today, LG’s Optimus 7 handset has suffered the only indignity left, after being videoed, pictured, and handled many a time — it’s had its official press shots unleashed unto the world. It’d be hard for them to tell us anything we don’t already know, but at least they’re nice and neat. More at the source link.

[Thanks, Ravi]

T-Mobile’s Passes prepaid data plans leak out

We’ve been saying prepaid data plans are going to be the next big wave in mobile, and it looks like T-Mobile’s getting on board — we were just sent this employee training sheet detailing the upcoming Passes plans. All of T-Mobile’s mobile broadband products are eligible, which is nice, but the plans themselves are a bit lame — $10 gets you 100MB of data or a weeks’ access, whichever comes first, $30 gets you 300MB or a a month’s worth of access, while $50 nets you 1GB or 30 days. That’s an odd blend of tiered data pricing and prepaid limits, and it compares poorly to T-Mobile’s standard $39 / month data plan with a 5GB cap. But hey — flexibility isn’t cheap. Expect to see this one launched at CTIA for October release — the docs say the new plans will arrive with a new Jet USB modem and a prepaid SIM card retail package as well.
