We’re getting close, very very close to the official launch of the Windows Phone 7 OS. And while the US might be waiting until November for actual handsets to go on sale, Europe looks set for an October release… just like we heard from Microsoft back in August. Things are even rosier in the UK where all five major operators will have Windows Phone 7 devices in stock. Now, according to a screengrab we’ve received from an internal Phones 4U system, we know that the HTC Mozart is on deck for a late October UK retail debut. To start with, the 119 x 60.5 x 11.9 mm touchscreen slate will feature a 3.7-inch 800×480 pixel TFT LCD, 1GHz CPU, 8MP camera with Xenon flash and 720p video recording, a 1300mAh battery, 8GB of memory, and a bevy of sensors for ambient light, gravity, compass, and proximity. Other specs include a 3.5-mm audio jack naturally, surround sound, Bluetooth 2.1, A-GPS, and 802.11n WiFi. Expect it to be sold free with the usual £35 per month carrier tithe. Man, you thought deciding on a smartphone was tough now, just wait until we’ve got WinPho 7 and MeeGo (hopefully) devices on the market before year’s end.

Update: Looks as if an Orange help guide all but confirms that the Mozart will be coming its way in the UK. Thanks, Gears!

Now that your AT&T-locked Samsung Galaxy S can occasionally find satellites, you’re probably hoping that the carrier kicks out some creamy Froyo as well, and it looks like that day isn’t far away — an unofficial but seemingly feature-complete Android 2.2 build is available for the Captivate right now. The faithful fiends at xda-developers have got build UCJI6 ready for download, which brings a mobile hotspot, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, the JIT compiler, Media Hub support, and a host of UI tweaks to boot. Instructions are available at the links below to walk you through the process, assuming you’ve already got root, have backed up all your files and are willing to take the risks in case this leaked build isn’t as official as it seems. Well, it was only a matter of time — first the leaked press shots of this elusive HTC Spark (although possibly misidentified as the Mondrian back then — note the shinier earpiece in the leaked AT&T ad), and now the real thing is in the hands of some lucky hardware tester. Fortunately for us, this guy also happens to have a naughty friend over at xda-developers — you’ll see in his photos that HTC Hub is alive and well on this 8GB handset, but otherwise, there’s not much info coming out of here. Regardless, feel free to head over to the source link for more Windows Phone 7 eye candy — you’ll need to register first, though, so we’ve grabbed a few shots below to get things going.

It’s been decades, in internet years, since we caught wind of a 4.3-inch, 1.3GHz HTC Mondrian via a leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM. The sun rises, the sun sets, life returned to normal, and yet… here we are again. This ROM comes care of a purported Vodafone leak and sports the name (so much as the filename hints) HTC Spark, a render of which bears striking resemblance to the Trophy we espied last week. Spark itself popped up as recent as early August on a sheet that claimed a 3.7-inch 480 x 800 display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera. Can all these loose threads tie together to form one cohesive smartphone sweater? Not yet, but it’s getting there.

Yesterday, we saw that LG’s Optimus One might ship with WiFi calling, and that’s all well and good, but a new leak suggests the Optimus was just the tip of a UMA iceberg to come. The above picture is one of several allegedly leaked training slides obtained by TmoNews, highlighting a dedicated “Wi-Fi Calling” app that may come pre-installed on upcoming Android devices, one of which just might be that new T-Mobile G2. Before you raid your piggybank in hopes of free VoIP calls, however, know that this app-ified brand of WiFi calling isn’t necessarily the seamless switching solution we’ve wanted all along; that little yellow “limitations” tab reportedly explains that as soon as you leave the WiFi radius, you effectively drop your call.
