Samsung prepping 6.5mm LCD for debut at CES

Samsung Korea has announced it will reveal an ever-so-thin HDTV prototype at CES this week — a clear trend going into the show. There’s a paucity of info about it as of now, but it’s going to be between 6.5 and 7mm thick — and it doesn’t appear to be part of the possible lineup we saw leaked a while back. “Thinnest HDTV” ever, huh? We’ll see about that soon enough: Samsung’s Vegas press conference is scheduled for Wednesday.

Windows 7 beta tested, photo’d, deemed ‘massive improvement’ over Vista

Yes, Virginia, there’s a leaked copy of Windows 7 beta floating around, and if you aren’t the type to “break the law” and check it out yourself, the folks at Tech Cast News have made for you a picture-laden walkthrough of the installation process and some of the OS’s new features, including Alt+Tab doppelganger Aero Peek, the icon-only Taskbar interface, and the Smart Folder-esque Libraries. Overall, they found the beta a major improvement over Vista and predict the final release will put Microsoft in consumers’ good graces again. Here’s hoping that apparent January beta release comes to fruition so we can sweep that other OS under the rug a little bit faster.

Update: Looks like Tech Cast News is down, standby for innovative Ballmer-based conspiracy theories.

Windows 7 beta ISO leaked to internet, world

In case you hadn’t heard: delicious, beautiful, mind-bending Windows 7 — apparently slated for a beta release in January — has leaked and is now available. That is, if you’re willing to, you know, break the law and download the ISO that’s floating around on BitTorrent trackers all over the place. The good news here is that the leak is apparently a quite stable, newer beta version (build 7000) than previously spied (6801). We wouldn’t know, of course (we try to walk the straight and narrow), but let us know if you’ve got your hands on it… how’s it treating you?

Dell Adamo rumored to boast DisplayPort, Blu-ray drive

Can you feel it? Dell’s Adamo is just about here, and the anticipation is palpable. We already learned that the unit’s 45-watt power adapter wouldn’t be anything special, but a Google cache shot of accessories and such from Dell’s own website is giving us a presumed look at what could be announced alongside the ultraportable. For starters, we get the impression that it’ll boast DisplayPort (judging by the DisplayPort-to-HDMI / VGA / etc. adapters) and at least have an option for a 2x Blu-ray combo drive. We’re also seeing 250GB / 500GB internal / external SATA drives and an auto / air adapter for powering the machine in your vehicle / personally owned 747. Only the suits in Round Rock know if these will actually come to fruition, but honestly, why bother hosting these up on your website if they weren’t on the way?

AMD’s Phenom II CPU goes on sale online in a curious, quiet fashion

Uh, AMD? We know most of your staffers are probably throwing back a glass of Egg Nog right about now, but you might want to get out something akin to a simple press release acknowledging the release of your dual-core Phenom II processor. For those keeping track, we’ve now seen the CPU announced via an outlet other than AMD, purchased by a normal citizen without access to AMD’s labs and now, for sale on the world wide web. Word has it that the units will start shipping on December 27th, which will probably be prior to an actual confession of their existence in the retail channel by AMD. Not that we’re complaining about the distinctly different than usual approach here, but our heads are certainly spinning.
