LG’s first Windows Phone 7 handset shipping as early as September

Our buds over at Engadget Chinese are just reporting back from a sitdown it had with LG Mobile in Hong Kong at a Chinese New Year event. The most tantalizing bit of truth is confirmation of that September launch date rumor for its first Windows Phone 7 Series device. However, this time LG padded the date a bit and said it would launch sometime between September and November. Of course, the only official word so far, has Windows Phone 7 launching before the “holidays,” so we’ll take what we can get. Maybe Mr. Ballmer meant Halloween?

LG debuts T280 ultralight, X140, X200 netbooks

Well, it looks like MSI isn’t the only company churning out new systems in advance of CeBIT — LG has now also let out word of three new laptops and netbooks ahead of the big show. Leading the pack is the stylish, CULV-based T280 ultralight pictured above, which packs an 11.6-inch display, a choice of a 1.3GHz Pentium dual-core or Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of RAM, a 320GB or 500GB hard drive, and a price ranging from $990 to $1,094. Joining it are the X140 and X200 netbooks, the latter of which actually looks to be identical to the X20 model we spotted at in the FCC’s hands earlier this month. Both of those will pack 1.66GHz Atom N450 processors, along with some other seemingly similar specs, but fairly different designs. Dive into the links below for a closer look.

Gartner: Global Phone Sales on the Rise Again

Gartner_Mobile_OS_Q42009.jpg
A new Gartner report indicates that worldwide mobile phone sales to end users grew 8.3 percent in Q4 2009, compared to the same period a year ago. Total sales for the year were down slightly at 1.21 billion units (down 0.9 percent from 2008). But given the huge slump earlier in the year, this is pretty positive news.
Nokia led the pack once again with 36.4 percent of worldwide sales (down from 38.6 percent). Samsung rang in at 19.5 percent (up from 16.3), wile LG finished third at 10.1 percent (up from 8.4). Motorola and Sony Ericsson declined sharply to 4.8 and 4.5 percent (down from 8.7 and 7.6 in 2008, respectively).
Smartphone sales by OS (pictured) is perhaps more revealing. Symbian captured 46.9 percent of all smartphone sales worldwide, but that’s down from 52.4 percent in 2008. Meanwhile, RIM and Apple took the next two spots, with 19.9 and 14.4 percent, respectively (up from 16.6 and 8.2).
Meanwhile, Windows Mobile sank to 8.7 percent (down from 11.8), while Android rocketed to 3.9 percent (up from just 0.5 percent shortly after its introduction in late 2008). Palm’s new webOS came in with just 0.7 percent of the market.

Gartner: Apple, Android, and RIM winners in 2009 smartphone growth, Nokia and Symbian still dominate

Gartner just released its annual numbers for worldwide mobile phone sales to end users in the year known as two thousand nine. Looking at smartphone OS market share alone, Gartner shows the iPhone OS, Android, and RIM making the biggest gains (up 6.2, 3.4, and 3.3 percentage points from 2008, respectively) at the expense of Windows Mobile (off 3.1 percentage points) and Symbian (off 5.5 points). Although Gartner says that Symbian “has become uncompetitive in recent years,” (ouch) it concedes that market share is still strong especially for Nokia; something backed up by Nokia’s Q4 financials and reported quarterly smartphone growth by 5 percentage points. Regarding total handsets of all classifications sold, Nokia continues to dominate with 36.4% of all sales to end users (down from 38.6% in 2008) while Samsung and LG continue to climb at the expense of Motorola (dropping from 7.6% to 4.5% of worldwide sales in 2009) and Sony Ericsson. See that table after the break or hit up the source for the full report.

LG’s in-cell multitouch laptop displays get unveiled, certified with Windows 7 Touch Logo (video)

Want evidence for the old saying that there’s always something next to wait around for with technology? We’ve only just reviewed the most bodacious X200 Tablet from Lenovo, yet already there’s a capacitive multitouch display that promises to be that little bit better. LG’s in-cell multitouch technology places the touchy-feely parts inside — rather than as a film on top of — the LCD panel, which we’re told eliminates the loss of picture quality and brightness that regular multitouch results in. It only works with two fingers so far, but LG is still pretty pleased with itself for being the first to gain the Windows 7 Touch Logo sticker with this technology, which was previously limited to cellphone-sized displays. Mass production is set for the second half of this year, and we’ll go ahead and assume that local nemesis Samsung will be using every moment until then to offer its own competing models. Bring on the marginally better touchscreens! We’ve now got a video for you as well, you know where to find it.

LG Arena officially lands on AT&T for $199

No surprise the LG Arena has finally arrived on AT&T after we saw those spyshots earlier this year — although it is packing AT&T Mobile TV, so that’s a nice touch. Everything else is as predicted: 3-inch WVGA screen, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus, GPS, and WiFi. Of course, you will be spending $199 on a two-year contract for a poorly-reviewed year-old featurephone when this hits on February 26, so that’s probably a mistake, but at least the gratuitous spinny-cube effects of LG’s S-Class UI will keep you distracted as you wander aimlessly through the wreckage of our once-proud civilization. There is also a web browser.

LG not interested in proprietary smartphone OS, likes Android and Windows Phone 7

LG has told the press at MWC that it will not be developing its own smartphone platform “at least for the next two to three years.” We think companies should focus on what they do well, and given our ambivalence toward the S-Class UI, it’s probably a good thing that LG will narrow its operation down to churning out delectable slabs of electronics and leaving the software side to the geeks over at Google and Microsoft. The head of the company’s handset unit, Skott Ahn, has indicated that the future of LG smartphones will be shared between Android and Windows Phone 7 (sorry, Symbian lovers). It will have taken plenty of restraint to not respond to local nemesis Samsung — who has just introduced its first Bada handset — but LG appears to be of the opinion (which we share) that the smartphone OS sector is already overcrowded, and its expectation is that over the next couple of years the market will distill itself down to just three predominant operating systems.

LG launches Skinny Frame plasma HDTVs, hates on bezels

LG launches Skinny Frame plama HDTVs, hates on bezels

If you needed another reason to not stop believin’ in plasma, look to LG. The company is introducing a pair of the sets in its home market of Korea dubbed “Skinny Frame,” a reference to the 25mm thin border around the panels — which honestly isn’t mind-blowingly thin, but nobody likes beefy bezels, right? The sets are available in 50- and 60-inch sizes, both offering 600Hz refresh rates, automatic contrast adjustment based on lighting conditions, and the ability to play photos and videos from a connected USB drive. Not bad, but at 1,700,000 and 3,800,000 won ($1,150 $1,500 and $3,325) they’re not cheap, either.

LG’s Feeney robot mascot sells air conditioners… with style

LG’s new robot mascot has already been out and about for a little while, but it now finally has a name thanks to a recent contest — “Feeney” — and a whole new lease on life. Not content to simply be an average air conditioner spokesbot, Feeney has taken the job to new, CGI-enhanced heights, and shown that even Olympic dreams can come true, with the help of a Whisen air conditioner. But don’t take our word for it. See Feeney work his magic after the break.

LG GW990 to be among first MeeGo phones

Intel and Nokia certainly surprised a few of us yesterday when they decided to merge Moblin and Maemo into the new, more terribly-named MeeGo OS, but it looks like LG is ready to roll with it — the Moorestown-powered LG GW990 we saw at CES will be one of the first MeeGo phones when it launches later this year. Of course, that doesn’t mean much of anything beyond branding, since the GW990 uses a custom UI on top of the x86-based Moblin core and we doubt there’s any of Maemo’s ARM-based code involved there, but it’s a definite sign of things to come. So, Nokia — are we going to see a Moorestown N900, or what?
