Verizon VX8575 Chocolate Touch confirmed to be uglier than that other Chocolate Touch

Verizon VX8575 Chocolate Touch confirmed to be uglier than that other Chocolate Touch

If you’ve been loving the pictures and videos we’ve been bringing you of the lusciously slim BL40 Chocolate Touch, but holding your breath since a certain blurry photo a few weeks ago showed a rather different Chocolate Touch, we have some bad news. According to Phone Arena News, a Verizon “focus group” (with a questionable sense of aesthetics) decided that the BL40 was crap, and so the somewhat unfortunate looking and decidedly asymmetrical VX8575 has been blessed for domestic release as “Chocolate Touch.” It looks to be standard fare featurephone stuff, with a 3.2MP camera, WVGA TFT display, and a browser that will support some subset of HTML. No word on if or when the BL40 will also be making an appearance at Verizon stores, but if we’d been pushed to the curb for something this busted we certainly wouldn’t come back — at least not without a very big bouquet accompanied by a sincere apology.

Leaked AT&T presentation confirms remaining WinMo releases for 2009, that employees can’t spell ‘proprietary’

Leaked AT&T presentation confirms remaining WinMo releases for 2009, that employees can't spell 'proprietary'

Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 release is just a month away, and so too are the first phones that will utilize it. Boy Genius Report has managed to get its hands on one slide from a recent AT&T concall confirming a partial list of the handsets set to ship with the new, improved, more finger-friendly flavor of the OS, and even a few models that will be upgraded to it. Two from Samsung, the Epix and Jack, will receive version updates in October, while HP’s Obsidian, earlier targeted for November, seems to have been pushed back to December, and LG’s Monaco similarly has slipped to November. HTC’s Fortress (a.k.a. the Pro2), however, will apparently be ready with bells on next month. As will we, dear readers. As will we.

LG’s New Chocolate BL20 spotted in the wild

Calling LG’s New Chocolate BL20 half of the BL40 would probably be classified as logorrhea, but there’s no doubt that this slider is handsome. So handsome, in fact, that LG has seen fit to showcase it over in the company’s new building in Amstelveen, Holland. GSMArena was able to snap a few pics of the installation while also gathering that it’ll boast a non-touch edition of the S-Class UI.Hit the read link for a few more looks — it ought to make waiting for LG to actually announce this thing a lot easier.

LG New Chocolate BL20 makes dramatic video debut

We’ve already had a pretty clear indication that LG was about to followup its stylish BL40 Chocolate Touch with a slightly lower-end BL20 model, but it looks like any doubt has now been cast aside by a just-revealed promo video, which shows off the new New Chocolate phone in all its swishing and swooping glory. That includes a brief look at the phone’s sliding keypad (it’s red), a quick once over of LG’s various widgets, confirmation of a 5-megapixel camera, and a look a somewhat unique feature called Text Scan, which promises to let you capture clear images of notes or memos (though it doesn’t seem to provide actual character recognition). But enough with the words — there’s two minutes of sound effects and visual overload after the break.

LG introduces XPION X30 Ion-based nettop

Apparently not content to let ASUS have all the fun, LG’s just announced the XPION X30, its first Ion-based nettop. This little fella features an Atom N230 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, and ships with Windows Vista (for the time being, at least). Aside from sporting six (count ’em!) USB ports, it weighs in at a mere 2.4 lbs, draws just 40 watts of power, and can be VESA mounted to the back of your LCD. But never mind all that — as long is it allows us to stream American Ninja from Netflix with minimal fuss we’re happy. Debuts tomorrow in Korea.

LG’s WIDEBOOK laptop series for 16:9 party people

In the never ending quest to capitalize on the book metaphor, we bring you the WIDEBOOK from LG. It’s wide see, 16:9 wide for what LG calls a cinematic experience. Oh, just you never mind that cinematic typically refers to 21:9 — this is marketing-speak, not science. Anywho, the five new models are LED backlit with Intel Core 2 Duo procs and include the 15.6-inch R580/R560, 14-inch R480/R460, and affordable 13-inch R380 that boasts a “Smart On” feature for five-second boots. The R580 (with Blu-ray) and R480 are premium models while the R560 and R460 lay claim to the “workhorse” moniker. The laptops come in either 1600×900 or 1368×768 pixel resolutions with up to 4GB of DDR2 memory and 500GB of disk, 802.11n and HSDPA data, e-SATA and HDMI interfaces, 1.3 megapixel cams, and 1GB of NVIDIA GeForce graphics. Expect to see ’em make the jump to the global stage throughout September. Until then we’ve got pics, lots of pics, and the full specs from the press release below.

LG Shows its First Android Phone

lg-android

Google-designed Android operating system is clearly the flavor of the season as seen by the launch of LG’s latest phone. The new LG phone, unimaginatively named LG-GW620, will the company’s first Android-based device. It will feature a 3-inch full touchscreen and slide out QWERTY keypad.

LG did not offer detailed specs for the phone.

The new device is expected to be first available in Europe in the fourth quarter of this year. The company has not disclosed the pricing for the device and hasn’t said when it will be released in North America.

“Our objective is to provide a wide selection of smartphones to satisfy the diverse preferences of today’s consumers,” said Skott Ahn, president and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile. “This Android phone is just one of many smartphone models we plan to introduce worldwide in the years ahead.”

LG’s Android phone comes on the heels of its rival handset maker Motorola introducing an Android-based device of its own called Cliq. A feature-packed phone, the Cliq has a touch screen, physical slide-out keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, 3G connectivity, the ability to shoot video at 24 frames per second, a standard headphone jack and GPS capability. The device also sports a custom-designed user interface that integrates email, text messages, social networking feeds from sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace and photos.

Other companies such as Samsung and Sony Ericsson are also looking to introduce new Android-based phones later this year.

Unlike Motorola, LG won’t focus on Android alone and will continue to churn out phones running Windows Mobile, says the company.  LG plans to announce three new Windows Mobile-based smartphones in the next few weeks and a total of 13 new smartphones that run Windows Mobile over the next 16 months.

LG Release Europe-Only Android Handset

lgandroid.jpg

The good news: less than a week after a non-HTC company finally threw its hat in the Andriod ring, LG has followed suit with the release of their own smartphone built on the Google OS. The bad news: the device isn’t coming to the US.

The Korea handset manufacturer today announced the release of the LG-GW620, the company’s first Android phone, which, at first glance, looks more than a little like Motorola’s Cliq, announced in the middle of last week. The handset features a 3-inch touchscreen and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard.

The device will be hitting “select European markets,” later this year.

LG officially announces GW620, its first Android phone

Though it already broke cover at IFA out in Germany a few days ago, LG’s just sealed the deal on its very first Android phone — the GW620 landscape QWERTY slider. Interestingly, the “Etna” name seen at IFA is missing from the official press release, but otherwise, the 3-inch touchscreen mentioned lines up nicely with what we’d previously known. Camera specs aren’t mentioned here, but as far as we know, it’s going to clock in at 5 megapixels and the phone looks to be loaded with a very bone-stock Android build sans LG-specific enhancements like an S-Class port. Interestingly, the GW620 flies in the face of LG’s super-cozy relationship with Microsoft and its commitment to concentrate on WinMo in its smartphone line, but you can tell that the company’s wording in the release is very carefully-chosen: the phone is geared at “making the smartphone experience more accessible for typical users” and “young professionals who demand a full QWERTY keypad,” which we guess makes WinMo a more business-savvy platform in LG’s eyes. We think we’re comfortable with that characterization — for now, anyway. Look for the GW620 to start showing up in “select European markets” in the fourth quarter of the year.
