Hasta La Gadget!

Apple users have the iPod touch, but what about Android fans? Where do they turn when looking for an app-running, connected media player — basically a smartphone without the phone? Well, believe it or not, there are a few options out there (like the Philips GoGear and Cowon’s D3) And one of the premier lines is certainly Samsung’s Galaxy Player offerings which, as the name implies, borrow a few things from their beloved cellphone siblings. There’s both a 4.0 ($230) and a 5.0 ($270) model which have four- and five-inch screens, respectively, but, besides the size, the two are practically identical in the specs department. We toyed with the smaller Galaxy Player 4.0 for a couple of weeks and our thoughts on Sammy’s (somewhat pricier) answer to the iPod touch are right after the break.

You have many choices for your media streaming needs, and Plex is doing its damnedest to get you onboard its bandwagon. Plex is well known for its multi-platform flexibility, and the arrival of the myPlex media server platform makes sharing your content across devices easier than ever. To go with that cloud capability, Plex has released a new version of its desktop and mobile clients as well. The updated code brings a slick new UI and myPlex support, plus Flash and Silverlight video capability to Plex Media Server along with official Windows support — including integration with Windows Media Center — and a laundry list of bug fixes and stability tweaks. Seagate’s latest addition to its GoFlex line of hard drives is dubbed the Cinema and, as you’ve probably guessed, it’s designed to hook up to your home entertainment system. Inside is a set of spinning platters up to 3TB in size, and around back are HDMI, composite, and S/PDIF hookups. This isn’t just some hard drive with a marketing gimmick though. The hardware itself is capable of pumping out 1080p video in a slew of different formats (including MKV and MP4 amongst others), and even comes packaged with a remote for perusing your media collection from the comfort of your milk crate couch. The GoFlex Cinema is available now in Europe, starting at €99 ($136) for the 1TB version and climbing to €179 ($246) for the 3TB model. No word yet on US pricing or availability.

Time is slipping away for it to meet its promised September debut, but Philip’s Android-based GoGear Connect handheld / PMP is now available for pre-order from at least one online retailer (J&R). It’ll run you $170 for the 8GB model and an even $200 for 16GB (both a slight discount off the list price), each of which come equipped with a 3.2-inch display, WiFi connectivity, built-in speakers, a microSD card slot for additional storage, and Android 2.3 with access to Android Market. Unfortunately, there’s still no indication of an exact ship date, but we’re guessing you won’t have to wait too much longer if you decide to take the plunge.

Another IFA, another minuscule ZEN X-Fi media player. And somehow, they manage to get less and less impressive with each passing year. This go ’round, we’re looking at the ZEN X-Fi3, equipped with a 2-inch LCD, 8/16GB of internal storage, Bluetooth 2.1, a built-in microphone / FM radio / speaker and a battery that should last up to 20 hours when playing back audio alone. As with prior ZEN units, this one also supports a multitude of file formats (FLAC, AAC, MP3, WMA, Audible, etc.), and for those kosher with watching Alf reruns on a thumb-sized panel, MPEG-4 / WMV9 / DivX video files are also capable of being played back. This guy’s slated to ship at the end of October across Europe, but with $99.99 (8GB) / $139.99 (16GB) price tags, we’re guessing most are bound to just collect dust. For shame.
