Aluratek tempts with 8.9-inch 720p Cinepal PMP

Aluratek hasn’t been one to really rival the mainstays in the digiframe and e-reader markets, but the outfit’s latest portable media player looks atypically slick. Boasting an expansive 8.9-inch display and an almost slate-like look, the Cinepal arrives with 4GB of inbuilt memory, an SD / SDHC expansion slot, 720p display and a built-in Li-ion good for up to six hours of continuous use. Aside from playing back WMA and MP3 jams, it’ll also handle DRM-laced DivX files along with the usual assortment: AVI, VOB, DAT, MPEG, H.264, MKV, JPEG, etc. Best of all, the player is priced at just $179, and it’ll be available next month for the Yanks who care.

Sony NW-A845 Walkman slips into European hands, too thin to be noticed

There’s an old saying that the Japanese keep the best to themselves, but not this time. Sony‘s finally man enough to let go of their “slimmest ever Walkman,” the NW-A845, to our European cousins. Apart from the obvious (and ever-so-useful) fresh injection of Latin-based languages, we’re not seeing much difference with the almighty Japanese version (NW-A840) from September: 7.2mm thin, 2.8-inch of OLED goodness, 29 hours of marathon listening and premium EX earphones. Unlike the buffet in Japan though, there’ll only be one “Falcon Black” 16GB model of unknown price for Europe, available for grabs in February.

Cydle P29A spices up mundane spec sheet with Mobile TV capabilities

Well, it seems like South Korean companies aren’t fooling around when it comes to getting us riding that newly minted Mobile TV bandwagon. In the wake of LG announcing its first Mobile DTV devices this morning comes Cydle with the P29A PMP. It sports a 2.9-inch touchscreen (see what they did there?), an accelerometer for automatic reorientation, a world clock, and voice recording via a built-in mic. That’s a somewhat disappointing goodie list, considering the currently available HD radio-playing P29H (pictured for illustration purposes) also has GPS onboard. Still, you can snap up the A model in Q2 2010 for $199, which seems like a keen price when compared to the $499 Mobile DTV car tuner we’ve seen before.

DoDoNA’s S-100 mp3 player doesn’t need no stinkin’ ergonomics

Clearly, skinny jeans aren’t yet as popular in Korea as they are in Western lands. For if they were, we’d never see chunky cube-shaped players like this S-100 here, and the world would definitely be poorer for it. Taking its design cues from the mesmerizing Mintpass Cube, with a smidgen of old school iPod buttonry, this device boasts a 1.1-inch OLED display, FM radio, built-in speaker, voice recording, and a slightly pedestrian 4GB of integrated memory. No, it’s not exactly sterling value at nearly $170, but we have the suspicion that the S-100 was never targeted at the unimpulsive analytical types anyway.

A.C. Ryan’s Playon!HD Mini player is tiny, still pushes 1080p worth of pixels

A.C. Ryan's Playon!HD Mini player is tiny, still pushes 1080p worth of pixels

Looking for an… alternative after being given a 1080p-streaming brick by Western Digital earlier this month? A.C. Ryan has a new option, the Playon!HD Mini. It’s a smaller version of the bigger Playon!HD that seems to lose only its internal drive bay, card reader, and €50, meaning this one retails for €99 — about $144. Yes, a good bit more than the WD TV, but it hits all the right marks, including 1080p output over HDMI or component, support for streaming media or USB mass storage, and even the ability to tune into Shoutcast and other undisclosed “internet feeds.” The company also promises “very active new firmware releases” which, without a little restraint, could be a recipe to repeat WD’s disaster.

[Thanks, Gavie]

Sony NWZ-S745 on sale in Canada, US given cold shoulder

We don’t know about you, but every time we hear of a Walkman, we think of the old school cassette players, and are left strangely disappointed by the slinky modern variants and their tons of storage. The 16GB S745, which has absolutely nothing to do with Mickey Mouse we assure you, has entered North American retail channels, only it seems to have skipped the US for its more peace-loving neighbor up north. Eagle-eyed Canadian shoppers have spotted the more advanced version of the S740 on sale in Sony Style stores (for 200 CAD or 188 in real American currency), replete with a 2-inch screen, noise-canceling earphones, and an unhealthily thin case. Still, suspicions abound that Sony is merely waiting for CES to roll around to make its big US unveiling, but if you really can’t wait it’s not like driving up to Canadia would be that terrible anyway.

Android-based Archos 5 Internet Tablet surfaces in 8GB form for $250

The Archos 5 Internet Tablet hasn’t had the smoothest ride into the commercial realm, but thanks to a few firmware updates, the Android-based player seems to finally be humming along just fine. That said, not everyone’s interested in shelling out big bucks for a capacious version, which makes the latest edition perfect for those simply curious to see how Google’s mobile OS fares on a portable media player. The 8GB model has surfaced over at Radio Shack, bringing with it all the goods on the larger siblings but with far less internal space. The best part? That $249.99 price tag (and that little “In Stock” icon beside it).

Boxee Box coming Q2 2010, D-Link revealed as hardware partner

Like a good one-two punch, now that Boxee Beta has been unveiled, here comes a glimpse of the company’s first hardware unit, the Boxee Box. D-Link takes the honors of being the inaugural hardware partner and Astro the designer. The Box, more like a submerged cube, boasts HDMI, SD card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, WiFi, and ethernet for old school internet connectivity. Unfortunately, we don’t know at this point what’s powering it under the hood, but we’re hoping that NVIDIA collaboration on the beta software might suggest some Ion here. Target release sometime in the second quarter of 2010 for about $200.

Boxee Beta unveiled: refreshed UI, DirectX support, and new content partners

Boxee‘s growing up! The media center’s hit beta status, and with the new Greek letter comes a revamped UI and some new functionality. For starters, the front page has been redesigned to highlight the menu, your personal queue, featured content, and recommendations that are fed in from Facebook or Twitter. For video, local files and online content are integrated into the same menu, can be filtered by free or pay content, and television shows are now sorted by season and episode. We’re particularly fond of the new global menu for quick shuffling through the menu and to shortcuts. At an event tonight in New York, the company’s also announced three new apps: The Escapist, Suicide Girls, and most interesting of all, “TV Guide to the Web” Clicker. On the more technical side of things, the graphical backend has switched from OpenGL to DirectX, and NVIDIA’s been cooperating to better optimize the software for use on the Ion platform via DXVA and Flash 10.1. Good changes all around, except we did just hear that it won’t support 64-bit in Karmick Koala — sorry, Ubuntu fans. As previously mentioned, there’s no wide release available yet, so you’ll just have to live vicariously through the gallery below!

Zii Trinity smartphone concept handled on video

It’s an all too brief look, but it’s infinitely more than we’ve seen so far. CNET Asia has managed some hands-on time the Zii Trinity concept smartphone. Quite a looker, and here we also get a glimpse of it next to the good ol’ Zii Egg. As noted by the narrator, the bottom proprietary slot can be swapped for microUSB or mini-HDMI, there’s a notably-sized 5 megapixel camera on the back, as well as one on the front for video conferencing. Enough talk, take a gander for yourself after the break.

[Thanks, kumar]
