UMID M1 put through numerous paces on video

We know it’s torture seeing all these UMID M1 videos with little to no hope of a US release, but just think — it’s the perfect excuse for you to use that dusty passport before it expires next year. The all-too-intriguing handheld, which is currently strutting its stuff in South Korea, has been heavily videoed by YouTube user loa2000kr. We’re talking Warcraft / Quake III demos, 1080p movie playback tests and even a look at how it handles 2D side-scrollers. For a peek at the most excellent, jump on past the break; for the full monty, tap that read link.

iriver’s D50N MID gets its own site, closer to our hearts

iriver came clean with its D50N e-dictionary / MID back at CES, but it’s taken until now for the company to host up a proper teaser site with all the details (in Korean, naturally). The beautiful handheld boasts a 4.8-inch 800 x 480 resolution display, 16GB of internal storage space, 802.11b/g WiFi, support for a whole litany of files, a microSD expansion slot, full QWERTY keyboard and a battery good for up to 16 hours of music playback (or 8 hours of video). Reportedly, the price on this one is pegged at around $370, but we’re no closer to finding out when it’ll ship to the states.

Samsung’s WiMAX-equipped SWD-M100 MID outed as Mondi

Although apparently not on its site just yet, it looks like Samsung‘s RSS feed has unleashed the first official pic of that WiMAX-enabled SWD-M100 MID we spotted at MWC as well as revealed a catchier name: Mondi. The device will utilize Clearwire’s Mobile WiMAX network simply dubbed “Clear.” Last we heard it was running Windows Mobile 6.1, but seeing as its sporting that dedicated Windows button required for WinMo 6.5, that all could change before it’s release. Speaking of which, mum’s the word on pricing or availability, we’re afraid.

Archos’ Android-based MID on track for July?

It hasn’t been much of a secret that Archos has an Android-based tablet / MID in the works, but it looks like the company is now finally talking a bit more openly about it, and dropping a few choice details in its recent year-end results announcement. The key bit is that the company is apparently planning to release the device “at the start of Q3 2009,” which is actually fairly specific as far as these announcements go, though no doubt still subject to change if Archos sees fit. Otherwise, the only word on the MID is that it will pack some telephony features and, of course, include all of Archos’ usual multimedia applications.

Viliv S5 MID detailed impressions, now with video!

We got to play with the Viliv S5 at CES, and now the gang at UMPC Portal have some detailed impressions they’d like to share with the world. The haptic touchscreen device has “one of the best” on-screen keyboards this reviewer’s seen, although it pales in comparison to a physical keyboard. Other minor issues include a lack of a microphone and physical mouse pointer, though you could quite conceivably get along just fine without ’em. That said, this bad boy apparently has “an overall good feeling” that makes the reviewer want to use the device more and give the touchscreen typing situation “a chance.” Kudos for the “incredibly impressive” battery life, and not even the lack of 3G and an SSD prevents him from declaring it “the best pocketable UMPC,” one that “raises the bar.” But that ain’t all — check out the video after the break for the handheld in all its glory.

UMID M1 mbook now less close to US release

Less close, further away — take your pick. The bottom line is that the UMID M1 mbook that we’ve been secretly swooning over for weeks now may be further away from a US release than any of us Yanks would like. According to new intel gathered by Pocketables, a Stateside release of the MID is still planned, but it’s apt to ship later than previously expected. Furthermore, the units already prancing about in other corners of the globe aren’t likely at all to support US 3G bands, so importing one won’t fill that hole in your soul the way a WWAN-enabled MID should. Better hurry up and deliver the goods UMID, else we’ll be forced to buy a rivaling unit and hack it up to suit our needs. Don’t say we won’t.

Intel develops multi-computer display linking, the commercial writes itself

We can see it now: the four former members of ‘N Sync (minus Justin Timberlake) showing up in an HP-inspired television spot, their heads cut off from the frame while they individually sing about what how each of their MIDs knows them personally and proceed to show what they can do in a array of spectacle and CG. Suddenly, they all hold their devices next to each other in a two-by-two grid pattern and the four screens become one as their voices, too, join in harmony — which is exactly what Intel touts its newly-developed multi-client display linking can do. Except for the harmony part, that’s all ‘N Sync. In a word? Beautiful. It’s all part of Intel’s MID-centric “Carry Small, Live Large” initiative. We’re not taking bets on whether or not this feature will make a cameo in its upcoming joint venture with LG or any device in the foreseeable future, but it’s definitely something’s that piqued our interest.

Atom-powered ClarionMiND MID hands-on at CeBIT

While we’ve seen the latest and greatest ClarionMiND reviewed since it got stuffed with Intel’s Atom and optional WWAN, we’ve yet to actually catch one in person… until today, that is. Over at Clarion’s spacious CeBIT booth, we took the liberty of snapping a few shots of this here MID. After toying with it for a few minutes, we were less than impressed by the finicky screen response, and the noticeable lag between application changes got annoying pretty quickly. Still, the main home screen looked mighty slick, so we suppose there’s nothing horribly wrong that a minor firmware update can’t fix. Anywho, dive on into the gallery below should you find yourself intrigued.

Viliv S5 MID gets unboxed on video

We’ve already seen this one up close but, if you just can’t get enough of Viliv’s new S5 MID, you can now get a guided tour of the complete unboxing process (including the rare treat of boxes within boxes) courtesy of the folks at UMPC Fever. Of course, they’ve also offered up a few impressions of the device itself as well, and while much is lost in translation, they do seem to be generally impressed with it and, in particular, the array of controls and function keys that complement that haptic-enhanced touchscreen. Head on past the break for the video, and hit up the link below for a closer look.

Hot vs. not: Viliv’s S5 vs. UMID’s Mbook M1

Hot vs. not: Viliv's S5 vs. UMID's Mbook M1

While neither has officially gone on sale yet here or abroad, two anticipated MIDs, the Viliv S5 and UMID M1, both went on pre-order last week in their home nation of Korea, and while the S5 sold out of its initial allotment of 1,000 units in just 8 hours, UMID still has unclaimed devices from its first batch of 500. This is at least in part due to some sketchy quality on the M1, with a finish on early machines that looks like a Tamiya kit haphazardly glued together by a four-year-old. The company is saying it will step up and replace all of the pre-ordered units with better ones once it gets its molds to line up, but having to trade in your new computer after a few weeks seems to partially defeat the purpose of getting one early in the first place. Of the two only the S5 is said to be officially coming to America at this point anyway, so hopefully that’s the one that caught your fancy.
