Intel and LG partner up for some hot MID action

Intel’s been talking up MIDs for a while now, and it looks like LG’s ready to buy in — the two companies just announced that they’ll be cooperating on a series of devices running Intel’s Moblin OS on the Moorestown platform. Interestingly, the release says the first product will deliver the “functionality of today’s high-end smart phones,” which seems to suggest that Intel’s willing to shift some product definitions around. Still, we wouldn’t expect a straight-up phone out of this one — we’re hoping for something more like Intel’s crazy concept MID shown here. We’ll see what these two come up with over the next year, it should definitely be interesting.

Video: Viliv’s S5 gets price, March release, and iTunes

We finally have the release and pricing details for the Viliv S5. Up for pre-order on the 24th in Korea, the XP-based MID with 4.8-inch touchscreen will begin shipping locally on March 3rd. Closer to home, the $649 S5 Premium model is scheduled to ship to the US and Europe by the end of March. That configuration will include a 60GB hard disk, Intel Silverthorne-class 1.33GHz Z520 CPU (yes, the very same proc as the VAIO P), GPS, Bluetooth, WiFi, and 1GB of memory. Lesser spec’d models and a maxed-out F-LOG version with a DMB television tuner will only be available in Korea. And know what’s great about a MID running XP? You can install pretty much any application you want, including iTunes as demonstrated in the video posted after the break. It’s no iPod touch, but then again… it’s no iPod touch.

Ask Engadget: Which MID should I get?

Thanks for tuning in for this week’s edition of Ask Engadget — a place for you, the reader, to have your deepest, darkest gadget-related question shot out to the world. If you’d like to get in on the action, just send an inquiry to ask at engadget dawt com; for now, however, why not give Charlie’s question a once over?

“I’m looking for a MID. Preferably one that’s 5- to 7-inches in form, and ideally one that runs Linux. All I want to use it for is some web surfing, maybe a bit of audio / video, and a little RDP / SSD stuff for work and home. I’m not too picky, just need some solid suggestions.”

Well Charles (can we call you Charles?), we’re pretty certain our readers can help out here, and if you don’t mind us saying so, OQO’s Model 2+ was pretty striking at CES.

Video: Aigo’s MID gets Windows XP, relabeled a UMPC

Aigo’s MID has been around the block for what feels like ages now, but it’s getting an all new purpose in life thanks to one of Redmond’s operating systems. If you’ll recall, a MID typically runs a “lightweight” OS and is designed to be more of a sophisticated PMP; on the other hand, a UMPC is built for a real-deal OS, something that business users may appreciate. Semantics aside, what we have posted up after the jump is a ten minute video showing off just how well this machine handles Windows XP, and by our estimations, it looks pretty darn good.

[Thanks, Benz145]

UMID M1 photos definitely surface – the rest we’re not so sure about

We’ve been hearing a bit about UMID’s MID M1 since it was first spotted last month — most of it wildly contradictory. At least we’ve reached a consensus (or so we think) on some of the essentials: weighing in at 0.7 pounds, this guy sports a 4.8-inch (1024 x 600) touchscreen, a 1.1GHz Atom processor, up to 1GB memory, up to 32GB SSD, WiBro / HSDPA / WiMAX / WiFi / Bluetooth, a 1.3 megapixel camera, mini USB 2.0, and an SD/USIM card. The device is shipping with Linux — which may come as a surprise to whomever ordered its Windows and Internet Explorer keys. CNET states that pre-orders start February 13th for 512MB models, while according to AVING they hit the street on the 20th. This thing will set you back about $500 and is only available in Korea. Maybe. One thing we do know, however — we got more pics for you after the break.

Viliv’s S5 MID goes haptic, will move you in March

Viliv's S5 MID goes haptic, will move you in March

Viliv has been showing some potential lately with its touchable upcoming products, the clean looking S7 netbook tablet and S5 MID. We received some further information on the latter of those two this morning, most notable being the inclusion of haptic feedback that should make its 4.8-inch, 800 x 480 1024 x 600 screen feel a little more tactile. We also got confirmation that the device will be running Windows XP hidden behind a custom UI overlay that, we presume, will be similar to the one we saw running at CES on the S7. Still no price, but the company is aiming for a March release domestically. Our fingers are tingling with anticipation.

Screen Grabs: OQO Model 2+ makes lunchtime appearance on ‘Lie To Me’

Screen grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dt com.

Screen Grabs: Intel OQO makes lunchtime appearance on Lie To Me

Oh Brendan Hines, you’re so dreamy with that scruffy beard, curly hair that just can’t be tamed, and propensity to whip out random gadgets at inappropriate times on Lie to Me. In the last episode Brendan’s character Eli Loker was waving OQO’s Model 2+ around at lunch like a wine list, the MID playing the role of voice stress analyzer, helping the team identify whether a reclusive witness was telling the truth. No word on whether OQO plans on including such insightful software with the device when it comes to market, but we’d be telling a lie if we said we thought it would.

Update: Andrew commented to let us know the software running here is called GoldWave, which may or may not help you identify someone being untruthful, but does generate some impressive-looking 3D visuals and can be yours for $45.

[Thanks, Mike Wydra]

Acer patent application reveals a MID-filled future

Now that the netbook sector is good and saturated, Acer is carving out a spot for itself in the entirely less crowded MID market. Or, at least that’s the impression we get from its most recent patent application. The image you see above is about it for details, though it’s fairly safe to assume that an Atom (or similar low-power CPU) will be housed within. Who knows, maybe we’ll get a peek of this critter for real at CeBIT — you can bet we’ll be looking.

[Thanks, Chris]

Trigem’s $500 LLUON Mobbit MID goes on sale, wackiness ensues

Hard to believe but after three years (almost to the day) a MID / UMPC running a Microsoft OS with a $500 MSRP is finally out for retail. Trigem’s LLUON mobbit is available in two configurations of which the lesser lists for KRW699,000 or about $490. A KRW799,000 ($560) presumably adds the listed WiBro spec for Korean style WiMaxing. That meager sum takes home a 13.2-ounce box o’ XP with 1GB of memory, a 30GB disk, 4.8-inch 1,024 x 600 touchscreen with stylus, Bluetooth, WiFi, and 2 megapixel camera all riding Intel’s Atom Z520 processor. Not bad… not beautiful by any stretch but significant enough to elicit maniacal behavior amongst devoted UMPC fanboys everywhere.

Update: It appears that the WiBro model is actually the cheaper of the two. The lower price resulting from a required 18 month subscription.

Video: OQO model 2+ MID gets unboxed, previewed

We were pretty stoked about the OQO model 2+ when we got to spend a few quality minutes with it at CES this year, and apparently actually getting one delivered to your house is even more spectacular. The cool cats over at MID Moves were able to score one of the Gobi / OLED-equipped handhelds for review, and rather than making us wait until all opinions were formed, they’ve hosted up a nice preview video along with a few high quality unboxing shots. Initial impressions seem pretty positive, with the SSD helping things along quite significantly. Granted, we would’ve preferred a WiFi-on battery life of more than two hours, but what fun would it be to not have a single gripe to harp on? More pictorial delight is in the read link, and the vid’s just past the break.
