Panda Cow Born, Will Run You $30,000

panda cow.jpg

How much would you pay for an animal that sort of resembles another animal? It’s no unicorn cow, sure, but you can get your hands on a panda cow for the low price of $30,000. There are only 24 of the animals in existence–the latest of which, Ben, was born at 8:00 AM on New Year’s Day.

The cow’s panda-like markings are the result of almost 50 years of genetic tricky at the hands of a Washington-based farmer. The animals are in high demand in China, according to their developer, Richard Gradwohl.

Ben’s owner, Chris Jessen, said that he would likely be selling the unique cow, though he hasn’t yet set a price.

Here’s some video of Ben’s Good Morning America debut, in which he may or may not be peeing on his owner’s lap.

The Wearable Humming Bird Feeder

humming bird mask.jpg

It’s got to be hard sell bird watching to this latest generation of short attention span having thrill seekers. A California-based wildlife photographer is offering a way, through the sort of gadget that we likely won’t be seeing during CES this week.

Doyle Doss’s Doss Products is offering up the Eye 2 Eye, a mask with a built-in humming bird feeder between its eye holes. Pour some sugar water in there, and the hummingbirds will hopefully start queuing up feed. Extreme.

“Hummingbirds are the alcoholics of the bird world,” Doss told AOL. “You can’t get between them and the bottle. They are ferocious when it comes to getting that sugar water. We try to make the mask as attractive as possible, but once they realize there’s food in there, that’s all they’re thinking about.”

The photographer reportedly got the idea for the device after a humming bird was attracted to his red beard, roughly 30 years ago. “That moment was magical for me,” said Doss, “and I wanted to share that experience with others.”

Doss built the device around a safety face shield, painting it red for the full beard effect. He has sold more than 400 Eye 2 Eye masks at $80 a pop.

Facebook Now Worth $50 Billion, Apparently

Thumbnail image for Mark Zuckerberg.jpg

Yeesh. What manner of ungodly sum is Facebook worth these days? $5 Billion, thanks to a new investment from the deep pockets at Goldman Sachs, who plunked down $500 million for the social networking site.

Remember how shocked everyone was when AOL bought Time Warner back in 2000–and not the other way around? Well, you might want to sit down for this–the new valuation puts Facebook’s valuation at more than Time Warner, Yahoo, and eBay.

A number of folks are speculating that such a valuation might end up convincing the company to go public with its stocks earlier than planned. At present, however, it doesn’t appear that Zuckerberg’s company has any plans to do so at least until 2012.

This Week’s Best YouTube Videos: Playing WoW with Kinect, The Blizzard of 2010, Hilarious Halftime Show, and More

Blizzard Time Lapse

Across the continental United States this week, thousands of people found themselves stranded with family after Christmas as record-breaking snowfall swept across the country and mangled travel services on both coasts. Many of us are digging out, but some of the top videos on YouTube this week are a testament to how much snow people actually had to deal with.
It’s not all about snow though, researchers have managed to use Microsoft’s Kinect to play World of Warcraft, ensuring players like myself now have a source of exercise with which to dispel those stereotypes about what WoW players look like. Also, AT&T released a pretty emotional documentary about why you really shouldn’t text while driving, one that everyone should see. Click the jump for the videos.

Google Marks New Year’s Eve With Doodle

New Year's Eve Google.jpeg

Happy GMMXIE. That’s 2011 to you–the year of the Google. The search giant is celebrating the new year the way it celebrates pretty much everything else–with a fancy new doodle.

Those clever kids in Mountain View have come up with a pretty good one, this time, stuffing MMI–the Roman numeral for 2011–into the logo (that’s “GMMXiE,” for the record, not “GMMXLE”).

So, happy new year from the folks at Google–may your 2011 be filled with slightly less confusing typefaces.

Archos Unveils the Archos 70 Internet Tablet, Powered by Android

Archos 70 Tablet

Earlier in the year, when Archos brought the Archos 7 Home Tablet to market, we noted its attractive price but some of you questioned its skimpy features. Apparently Archos got the message, and has announced the Archos 70 Internet Tablet, complete with a 250GB hard drive, 7-inch screen, and 1GHz processor under the hood. The Archos 70 will run Android 2.2 “Froyo” and support 720p HD video playback.
The tablet will be a half-inch thick and weigh in at 14-ounces, making it thin and relatively light, considering the physical hard drive inside. Archos says the device will have HDMI out, and support Flash.
Archos has also given a number of Android apps a facelift for the tablet form factor, and will give you access to the AppsLib as opposed to the Android App Market, and come with its own music and media player, as opposed to the recently leaked update to the pre-installed one.
All of the features in the Archos 70 will come at a price though; this 7-inch tablet will set you back $349.99 at retail, and is available to purchase at Archos’ Web site. The tablet will also be on the show floor at CES 2010 in Las Vegas next week.

Gresso Adds Gold and Wood Trim to Your iPad

iPad Gresso

The iPad is a pricey enough gadget that you probably want a case for it, no doubt, but if you want to make sure the world knows that not only are you wealthy enough to own an iPad, but you’re wealthy enough to have it coated in African Blackwood and 18 Karat Gold, Gresso can dress one up for you. Covered in beautiful dark wood on the back and the Apple logo replaced with a solid 18 Karat gold version, the iPad Gresso is nothing short of beautiful.
The mod gives you full access to all ports and buttons on the trim, and is made from solid wood, so no two cases look alike. The iPad Gresso is more of a housing than a case, so don’t expect this thing to be rugged – but after all, if you have the money for this, you can probably replace the thing easily if something happens to it, right? Gresso says you’ll be able to pick one up starting tomorrow via special order.

Finally: Luxury Condoms for Sale in France

luxury_condoms.jpeg

Frankly, I’m a little bummed that I found out about this after Christmas. It would have made my holiday shopping a whole lot easier. A company in France has introduced to the world what can only be described as the Rolls Royce of condoms.

“There [is] always a need for quality, good taste and beautiful objects,” Count Gil de Bizemont, the VP of The Original Condom Co. told the press in an interview. Yep, that’s “Count.” He and his fellow co-founder describe themselves as “French aristocrats.”

Forget diamond rings–show her you care with a really expensive rubber. Bizemont again, “It is sexy to care about yourself and to want to pamper and provide yourself with the very best.”

The fancy pants condoms ship in suede-lined packages that were inspired by jewelry boxes. They run three for $13.50 and six for $20 with the box. You can also pick up singles for $2 each. You can pick them up online now, and come January, they’ll be available via luxury retailers and hotels.

Facebook Bigger Than Google in 2010 – Report

Image TIME Person of the Year magazine cover featuring Mark Zuckerberg.jpg

In the tech world, “bigger than Google” is pretty much akin to “bigger than Jesus,” right? The former is certainly something that Mark Zuckerberg can claim in 2010. For the first time, ever, according to traffic analyst firm Hitwise, Facebook was the most visited site in the US, beating out perennial favorite, Google.

According to the firm, the social network comprised a staggering 8.93 percent of all US Web visits this year (between the months of January and November, when the survey was conducted). Google, now at number two, nabbed 7.19 percent of all visits.

Yahoo still managed to get some high marks, grabbing the numbers three and four spots with mail.yahoo.com and plain old Yahoo.com. And all of that advertising money has clearly paid off for Microsoft–Bing made an appearance in the top ten, coming in at number 10.

Woman Accidentally Kills Self With Electric Massager on Christmas Eve

A Florida woman accidentally strangled herself on Christmas Eve while attempting to relieve some pain with an electric neck massager. Michelle Ferrari-Gegerson, a 37-year-old physician residing in a suburb of Fort Lauderdale, was discovered lying unconscious on her bedroom floor by her husband. She was wrapping presents.

By the time paramedics came, Ferrari-Gegerson was declared dead. According to investigators, the cord of the electric massager had gotten tangled in her necklace, strangling her.

Police will not release the name of the massager used until the investigation is complete.
