BookBook is an iPad Case at Home on a Bookshelf

BookBook - iPadIf you like the idea of putting your iPad into a case that looks at home on a desk or bookshelf but you don’t like the notebook appearance of the DodoCase, you have the option of making your iPad look like an old, well-loved book thanks to the BookBook for iPad. TwelveSouth, which already makes the BookBook for MacBook and MacBook Pro, has a version of the BookBook designed for the iPad. The iPad version comes in two flavors: the Classic Black, which is a dark brown cover with black trim on the spine, and the Vibrant Red, which is a lighter shade of brown with sharp red trim on the spine.

Both versions are hand-crafted hard cases that feel like a hard-back book, complete with solid pieces on all sides, including the spine and front of the “book.” The case is bound in leather and has a zipper that keeps the BookBook shut until you want to open it. The interior has a soft lining, and elastic straps keep your iPad in place while you use it or put the BookBook on its edges and use it as an iPad stand. TwelveSouth sells the BookBook for iPad for $69.99, and is offering free shipping for a limited time.

Breathe Easy Inside with the USB Anion Air Purifier

usb-anion.jpg

Living in a New York City apartment, you learn quickly to care about indoor air quality. If your wallet resists shelling out for a large floor model, take a look at the Anion Air Purifier.

Sold by Brando for $19, the small USB Anion Air Purifier can easily fit on the smallest and most cluttered desk. It’s powered through the computer’s USB port and purifying the surrounding air as long as the computer is on (and who turns off their computers nowadays?). If for any reason you don’t want the device doing its purification thing, there’s an On/Off button.

There’s certainly plenty of dust and other irritants floating around indoors that we wouldn’t find outside, including smoke from your downstairs neighbor’s cigarette, odors, and mold. The Anion Air Purifier claims to purify air in a 20-square-meter area by emitting healthy negative ions. These ions attach themselves to air molecules and any impure particles in the air to negatively charge them.

The air purifier comes with a USB power cable and is available in either red and black or yellow and white.

Ergotrons Standing Desk Mount Turns Desks into Standing Workspaces

WorkFit - Single DisplayMore and more people are opting to stand at their office workspaces instead of sit, claiming that burning calories, reduced back and neck strain, and better circulation are among the health benefits of standing while you work instead of sitting. Some studies even claim you can get a productivity boost if you stand while you work instead of sit. For the people who prefer to stand while they work or are interested in trying it, Ergotron’s WorkFit-S is the ideal peripheral for transforming your traditional sitting desk into an elevated workspace you can use while standing.

Even if you don’t want to stand, the WorkFit-S is designed to make sure your workspace is as ergonomic as possible. The desk mount allows you to raise or lower your work surface up to 18-inches with an additional 5-inch lift to your LCD. The mount also comes with a keyboard attachment designed to reduce wrist and arm strain, and comes in models that support single LCDs, dual displays, and laptops with or without a second display attached. The single-display model is available for $379 list, and the dual-display model retails for $399.

Take a Trip with the iLuv i1166 Portable Media Player

iLuv - i1166Almost a year after it was originally scheduled, and over a year after it won the Best of Innovation award at CES 2009, the iLuv i1166 portable media player is on store shelves and ready for users who are looking for a way to take multiple forms of media with them when they travel. Instead of ripping DVDs or converting video to play on a certain type of device, the iLuv i1166 is a multimedia device that looks like a tablet, but under the 8.9-inch LCD display is an iPhone/iPod dock connector (that charges your device when the i1166 is plugged in to AC power), and a DVD player.

The i1166 has USB and SD card slots on the side of the device so you can connect flash drives with media on them, or an SD card with photos on it. The device even has two stereo headphone jacks on it so you can share your movies or music with a friend while you’re traveling. There’s a kick-stand on the back so you can rest it on a flat surface, and it comes with a remote so you don’t have to enter the device menus while you’re watching a movie. All of these features in a portable device will come at a price though; it’s available now for $299.99 at iLuv’s online store.

Scosche Announces reVIVE II Dual USB Chargers Available Now

Scosche - Dual ChargersIf you have more devices that charge over USB than you know what to do with or have outlets near your desk to support, Scosche’s new reVIVE II Dual USB Chargers can help. The company unveiled two models, the reVIVE II Dual USB Home Charger and Car Charger, both of which can support two devices at once, even if one of them is a power hungry device like an iPad and the other is slightly less so like an iPod or a mobile phone.

The home charger plugs into a standard wall outlet, and the car charger plugs into the 12v DC adapter in most vehicles. Both the home and car models are available now at Scosche’s Web site. The home charger retails for $29.99 and the car charger for $24.99.

Luggage Tags Double as Flash Drives

Thumbnail image for luggage-drive.jpgLuggage tags in the air; flash drive on the ground — these luggage tag flash drives join the long line of dual-purpose drives.

It’s a perfectly valid luggage tag, with its plastic handle to loop around the bag’s handle and displaying your contact information through the clear plastic. Snap open the tag and it reveals a USB plug to be a flash drive. With 2GB storage, it’s a decent-sized drive.

Available in gray, green, light blue and pink, these tags are available online for $29.95.

It’s a nice idea, especially if you are on the road and need a way to transfer some data. Instead of digging around for a flash drive, it’s already there on the luggage. Or just store information you need for the trip (like the contact information of that long-ago friend you want to have lunch with) and as long as you have the bag, you are set.

That brings up a good point, though. Airlines do often lose luggage: do we really want them losing our data as well? I predict a crime spree of stolen luggage tag thefts at airports, too.

Toshiba Announces Self-Encrypting, Self-Erasing Hard Drives

Toshiba - LogoAs both enterprises and everyday users invest in whole-drive encryption software and struggle to make sure that the hard drives in their laptops and desktops are properly wiped clean of all data before they’re disposed of, Toshiba has unveiled new disk features that may make the process of upgrading to a new computer easier for home and business users alike.

Toshiba announced Wipe Technology, a new feature that their line of Self-Encrypting Drives would now come with, which allows users and IT administrators to safely and securely erase user data, or simply erase the drive’s encryption key (thus rendering the data unusable) before disposing of a system or re-using it.

The technology is aimed at businesses that want the ability to quickly clean hard drives before re-deploying them, selling them, or destroying them. Wipe can also wind up being very useful for consumers who want to keep their data safe and encrypted while they travel, but then make sure their drive is clean before they give their old laptop to a friend or family member.

Pen or Pencil? Sharpie Says Both!

sharpie.jpgRaise your hand if you remember the erasable pens. Sharpie’s Liquid Pencil flips this concept on its head as a permanent pencil. It’s quite appropriate for the permanent marker company to decide pencil scribblings can be permanent, too.

The Liquid Pencil contains an “ink” made from liquid graphite (as opposed to the solid soft kind that is inside a mechanical pencil). Once written, the graphite is exposed to the air, and after three days, dries to permanent ink. You can erase it at any time before it dries.

Although Sharpie has said these pencils are not available till September, Office Depot already has them online. At $5 for a pack of two (and a six-pack of erasers), it’s a little more than anyone would pay for a normal pencil, but it’s still reasonably priced.

This is definitely going on my back-to-school shopping list.

Dream MachineAnyone who travels often knows that sometimes the right pillow can make all the difference between a good night’s sleep and long hours spent tossing and turning.
