Video: WiiNxtBalance tools around, doesn’t fall down

This little bot– the NXTway-GS — is a self-balancer, and he’s pretty cute, to boot. Thanks to some clever modifications, he’s now controllable via Wiimote. Using the LEGO NXT system, and some custom firmware, the little dude is connected to a computer via Bluetooth. The video of the robot in action is after the break — but if you want to see full instructions for making one of your very own — hit the read link. And may we suggest you slap a powdered colonial wig on yours?

Video: NES Advantage controller mod for Xbox 360

Sometimes you can’t beat the classics. The gentleman who brought his old NES Advantage to bear on his Xbox 360 is back, this time working his magic on the Super Advantage joystick. This bad boy is wireless, runs off an internal battery (charged via standard USB), and sports an LED player indicator. If you’ve never been able to get used to the standard Xbox controller, keep an eye out for this bad boy on eBay. The modster in question has stated his intention to let this one go to the right bidder, but not before he makes another one for himself. The next trick, he says, is to add cross-platform compatibility with the Wii and SNES. Video after the break.

Video: Steampunk Segway ditches electric motor for the sake of authenticity

Wouldn’t be caught dead on an honest-to-goodness Segway? How’s about this creature? The Legway, an appropriately dubbed steampunk‘d Segway, ditches the electric motor in favor of Fred Flintstone-esque motoring techniques, and it also relies almost entirely on recycled materials. The crazy part? Its creator even took the time to hand craft a step-by-step guide to building your own, which undoubtedly foreshadows the real human transporter revolution. Unfortunately, there seems to be no word on whether this thing will also reverse in unstoppable fashion when you least expect it, so stay sharp out there. Vid’s after the break, and it’s absolutely hilarious.

Wall-E case mod is chock full of adorableness, win

Just look into those cute, bubbly eyes and tell us that you’d still rather keep your plain-jane tower if offered this instead. We know, you can’t. While we’ve seen a number of Wall-E mods over the months, we’ve never seen anything close to this in terms of sheer incredibleness. So far as we can tell, this robotic PC even opens up his own optical drive, and he can also send out love letters to one “Eeeevvvaaaaa” without human intervention. A thing of beauty, no?

[Thanks, Doug]

Video: HY Research’s Beagle Board-based MID

This next item is a homebrew MID loosely based on the funky and fresh Nokia N800. Sure, until Mr. HY Research gets a battery installed, the “mobile” part of this internet device will rely on an extension cord… but that said, this is one fun little project. Based on the ARM Cortex A8-based Beagle board, it features a 4.3-inch (480 x 272) display, Bluetooth, support for OpenGL ES 2.0, S-Video and HDMI outputs, USB, SD / MMC, RS-232, and audio in / out connections. As controls go, this thing sports not only a touchscreen, but a five position joystick, three position slider, and plenty of buttons as well. Not bad, not bad at all. The company is on the lookout for “consulting and designs of custom expansion boards,” so if you’re in the mood to do some business, hit that read link. If you’re really just a fan (aren’t we all?) there is an action packed video of the thing in action, after the break.

Video: toddler-safe DIY remote control

No, this isn’t one of the editors at Engadget, although — judging by the way he conducts himself in this hands on video — we’ll probably drop him a line by the time CES 2010 rolls around. This DIY remote control consists of a USB number pad that’s been rehoused in a toddler-safe enclosure and outfitted with some rather large buttons. It looks like it’s just the thing for letting your little guy take control of Teletubbies, or Baby Einstein, or whatever it is the kids are into these days. Have a young one of your own? Hit the read link for the step-by-step instructions and thrilling in-progress photos. Video after the break.

Video: 128GB SSD slotted into Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9

Considering just how cheap Dell’s Inspiron Mini 9 gets on occasion, there’s practically no doubt that the SSD portion of this mod will run you more than the computer itself. For those wild and wacky DIYers who couldn’t honestly care less, jkkmobile has put together a video (along with a gallery of images) showing exactly how the process works. For what it’s worth, we’re told that the whole ordeal was a simple matter, but you can judge for yourself after jumping past the break and mashing play.

Ben Heck’s Commodore 64 laptop mod: like 1982 without the feathered hair

Benjamin J. Heckendorn seems unusually enthused by his latest hack’n mod, calling the Commodore 64 laptop “probably one of, if not my favorite project I have done.” That’s saying something from the man who brought the “Benheck” finesse hammer down upon just about every modern and classic PC / game console and accessory you can think of. The C64 lappie features a C64C motherboard, a Gamecube power supply, and special 1541-III DTV device that emulates a floppy drive using a FAT-32 formatted SD card — all while keeping true to the beige 8-bit spirit of the original. And if we’re not mistaken, he’s controlling it with an Atari joystick seen in the video posted after the break. Then again, there could be an Xbox 360 controller hiding in that joystick knowing Ben.

Savory for Kindle 2 automates PDF and EPUB conversions, doesn’t make James Patterson any more enjoyable

We’ve seen surprisingly few Kindle 2 hacks ’round these parts, and therefore few apps that run on the beloved e-reader itself. One notable exception is Savory, which monitors the device’s Documents directory for files sporting either the .epub or .pdf extensions — when one of these guys rears its ugly head, it’s converted to a Kindle filetype. The only hitch is that the program (as currently available) chokes on image-based PDFs — according to the author, images in PDFs are fine, as long as there is some text to extract. Sure, the software doesn’t do anything that Amazon doesn’t already do for free — but it does make the conversion quick and painless. Ready to give it a go? Hit the read link for the files, and you’ll be mere moments away from all those terrific Left Behind books someone scanned and posted on The Pirate Bay. You’re welcome.

Snow White chomps on poison Apple mod

Oh sure, this MacBook Apple mod isn’t nearly as functional as that secondary display one, but you just can’t beat the artistic flair here. We’ve got nothing but props to hand out to the artist — we mean, you can just see the yearning in Snow White’s eyes, can’t you? She should really know to not eat after people, but seduction has a way of screwing with reason.
