Paper Jamz Maker Sued by Gibson

paper-jamz-guitar.jpg

Gibson Guitars last week hit Paper Jamz manufacturer WowWee with a lawsuit. According to the suit, the company copied Gibson guitar designs in the creation of its Paper Jamz guitar line.

Gibson cites a quote from the WowWee site in the suit,

The designs of each Paper Jamz guitar are similar to a classic that is highly sought after. For example, the Rock Style 6 guitar in Series 1 of Paper Jamz is made to resemble a Gibson SG while the Rock Style 1 is made to look like the famous Gibson Les Paul. You can choose from your favorite styles of guitar, with the styles ranging from the classic Fender Stratocaster the “Gibson Flying V” design.

The suit claims that the sale of such a product create confusion amongst consumers, given the fact that Gibson has licensed its designs for the Rock Band game line, which targets a similar demographic.

The guitar market also named a number of high profile retailers in the suit, including Amazon, K-Mart, and Target.

10 Podcasts for Your Holiday Commute

old-radio.jpg

I’ve heard it said before–heck, I’ve almost certainly said it myself–the only people who listen to podcasts are podcasters themselves. It’s a gross overstatement, to be sure, but there’s also a little bit of truth in it. I mean, I know I didn’t really start listening to them regularly until I actually started making one (the dearly departed PCMag After Hours and, more recently, Paying Dues and The Cross Hatch Podcast, thanks for asking).

Podcasts can provide hours of entertainment, from news, to music, to comedy. Before you jump in the car or get on that plane to get where you need to be for Thanksgiving, peruse this list of our favorite podcasts. There’s bound to be something on here that you’ll enjoy–and it’ll make the gridlock and the creepy full-body scanners (not to mention the family) that much easier to bear.

Great Gift: Sonos Multi-Room Music System

Sonos S5 outdoors web.jpg

You’re a grown-up now. Do something more grown-up during parties than turning the volume to 11 to create whole house audio. The Sonos Multi-Room Music System can grab music off a PC or home file server and stream it, wired or wirelessly, to as many rooms as you have devices. The ease of operation and elegant interface makes you think this is an Apple spinoff; actually, the Sonos people are brilliant in their own right. Start with the S5 ($400 direct), an all-in-one device you easily carry from room to room. Add a ZonePlayer 120 ($500) if you already have speakers, or a ZonePlayer 90 ($350) to connect to an existing stereo or to amplified speakers. You can control it from your iPhone, iPad, PC or Mac, or with a Sonos controller. This is one wireless (or wired Ethernet) system where the music plays in sync in every room, all the time. Or you can have different music in each room. Or you can dock your iPod and control and play that music through the house.

Great Gift: Cellphone, iPod Booster Battery

EnergizerXP2000battery.jpg

Carry an iPod-size rechargeable external battery to double or triple your phone’s talk time or your MP3 player’s playback time. They all have a USB jack; plug your device’s cord into that and you’re up and running again. The cheapest, smallest units provide a half-charge to a cellphone or MP3 player battery and take up little space in a purse or shoulder bag until needed; the largest provide 2-3 charges of a phone or music player. Recharge them by plugging into a laptop/PC’s USB jack, or into a USB wall transformer. Prices run $15-$50. The powerpack is good for 500 charges. One of the more sophisticated is the Energizer XP2000 Universal Rechargeable Power Pack, $30 street, with its own car and wall recharging transformers, four power tips, and carry case. There are many, many other choices.

This iPhone Dock Has No Wires

If you’re the type who has wood paneling in their car, a bamboo iPhone case, and a solid-wood desk, the Koostik iPhone Dock will fit perfectly with your motif: it’s an iPhone dock that’s made entirely of wood, with no wires or speakers at all. The dock is designed to amplify the sound from the iPhone’s built-in speaker using the natural acoustics carved into the wood, and the folks behind it say it can make your iPhone’s speakerphone up to four times louder than it already is.
The Koostik will set you back $90 retail (with free shipping,) mostly because each one is hand-carved by the master woodworker who invented it. You can order them in a variety of colors and wood varieties, including combinations of Maple, Walnut, and Cherry faces and bodies.
It’s not built to be a replacement for an electronic dock or amplifier, and it won’t charge your iPhone because it doesn’t require electricity. Still, if you like a touch of elegance on your desk or just love all things wood, the Koostik is for you.

Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy $4 on Amazon (Black Friday)

My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy [Explicit].jpg

Amazon is breaking out the Black Friday deals early this year. Every day until Cyber Monday, the site will be offering up five MP3 albums on the cheap, leading off what’s sure to be the biggest record for the foreseeable future, Kayne West’s new nearly universally praised record Kanye’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.

The download version of the hip-hop opus will run you $3.99 for the next day or so–it’s the closest thing to a steal without actually stealing the thing (which is considerably harder, now that LimeWire has shut its doors).

Today’s four other selections are new records from My Chemical Romance, Ne-Yo, Robyn, and (shudder) Dane Cooke’s Greatest Hits.

Headphone-maker Empire Brands is reintroducing three of its most popular earbuds and headphones–the Tours, Jaw Breakers, and Metallics–this time with built-in mics. That makes them perfect for smartphone use.

The Cellular Metallics line (center) come in four metallic shades. They’re only $14.99. Finally, the Cellular Tour (right) are on-the-ear headphones in three bright, dual-color designs with a glossy finish. They’re $24.99. Beatles Rounding Out iTunes Top 10 Albums

beatles_apple.jpg

The tech press yesterday scratched its collective head
yesterday, after it was revealed that Apple’s earth shattering announcement
was, in fact, the long awaited addition of the Beatles’ catalog to iTunes.

To plenty of music fans, however, the announcement was a big
deal. And now, the fab four is working its way up the charts, having secured
four of iTunes’ top ten album slots. Numbers six, eight, nine, and ten belong
to Abbey Road, The White
Album, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
, and the Beatles Box Set.

The top three spots are still being held down by more
contemporary artists like Rihanna, Rascall Flatts, and the cast from Glee.
Still. Not bad for a day in the life.
