Can 3D Gaming Save Nintendo?

3dshandsonfull.JPGNintendo has been a longtime favorite for gamers ever since Nintendo released the NES. However, since more video game console manufactures have gained popularity, the stakes are as high as ever for Nintendo. The company is now saying that all hope is on the new Nintendo 3DS console.

Shigeru Miyamoto, who is considered to be one of Nintendo’s best (created Mario, Donkey Kong, and The Legend of Zelda, to name a few), is excited about 3D gaming. Miyamoto believes that Nintendo can take 3D to the next level by planning to release games that could boost the declining profits for the gaming giant. The 3DS is the first console to ever support 3D games. Miyomoto also believes that Nintendo could change the face of gaming, just like the Wii did with motion gaming.

While Miyamoto does believe that it could change gaming, he also admits that 3D is nothing new to the world. However, we can all agree that it is new to gaming. He also stressed that Nintendo, unlike other gaming manufactures, design games for the hardware that Nintendo builds. According to Miyamoto, that gives Nintendo a better edge against the others.

Nintendo 3DS gets torn apart and hacked a day after Japanese launch

So you just got a Nintendo 3DS following its launch in Japan — what do you do? While most would be content to simply pass the time with Pilotwings for at least a few days, others are a bit more… curious. In that group you’ll find the folks from Tech-On!, who have already torn the handheld apart and even gone the extra mile to examine its 3D display under a microscope — they assume it’s a Sharp parallax barrier display, but weren’t able to confirm it as such. As if that wasn’t enough for a day-old system, YouTube user ayasuke2 has already hacked the system use R4 cards and run unauthorized Nintendo DS games. Head on past the break for some video evidence of that, and hit up the source link below for the complete teardown.

Nintendo 3DS Top-Selling Title: Professor Layton

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle.jpg

Nintendo’s official figures put the Nintendo 3DS at 400,000 units sold during its Japanese launch–other folks are estimating sales a bit lower (around 371,000, according to one source). Whatever the case my be, one title seems to be standing head and shoulders over the rest.

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle, the latest in a line of puzzle games that have proven massively popular in their native Japan, is topping the list at 117,589 units sold. That’s roughly one-third or one-fourth of the number of 3DS devices sold, depending on who you ask.
By most accounts, however, the launch selection for the portable platform was fairly lackluster, with Nintendogs + Cats serving as the other front runner. The U.S. launch selection looks a bit more promising, thankfully, with 18 titles. For those eager to see what all the fuss is about, Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle will be coming to North American 3DSes, though not at launch.

Nintendo 3DS launches in Japan, populace tears through initial 400,000 unit shipment

You won’t be able to snap one up at your local GameStop for a full month, but the Nintendo 3DS had a solid launch in Japan today, reportedly liquidating nearly its entire initial shipment of 400,000 spiffy stereoscopic gaming handhelds by the end of the day. Some of those sales were to customers waiting in a few lines up to 2,000 persons long, but those lines were exceptions to the norm — several publications note that very few stores actually had any lines to speak of, as most Japanese electronics retailers sold out when the 3DS went on pre-order over a month ago. Get a refresher on what to expect from the system here (and here) or read all about the surprisingly orderly Japanese launch at our source links.

Update: Our friends at Engadget Japanese were on hand for the 3DS launch, and picked up a pair of systems themselves — get a closer look at one of the first retail 3DS units in the gallery below!

Nintendo Launch Titles: A History

Super_Mario_Bros_cart.jpg

Earlier today, Nintendo finally unveiled the launch titles for its eagerly awaited upcoming portable, the 3DS. When it launches on March 27th, 18 titles will be hitting the market. There are a number of familiar titles on the list, including Street  Fighter, The Sims, Madden, and Pilot Wings.
In honor of the announcement, we’ve taken a quick look at past Nintendo console launches, from the NES up through the Wii. A few interesting tidbits: The NES, like the 3DS, launched with 18 titles. Both are tied for second place for number of games after the Wii, which launched with 21. The Nintendo 64, meanwhile, had the fewest games, only launching with two, when it was released in 1996.
The 3DS is one of the few titles to launch without a Mario game (the other three are the Gameboy Color, Gamecube, and Wii.

Xbox 360 Slowly Gains On Nintendo Wii

xbox-360.jpgMicrosoft Xbox 360 may finally be able to beat the Nintendo Wii. While Wii sales have slowed down, the console has been a top seller for some time now, thanks to the unique games, low prices, and the endless supply accessories. Now the Xbox 360 is looking to take over, thanks in large part to the success of the Kinect.

Since Microsoft has released the the peripheral, sales for the console has risen. Between the hit game series like Halo, and, Call of Duty the sales for the Xbox 360 have started to compete with the Wii at last.

It is about time that Microsoft can finally beat with Nintendo. It should be interesting to see how Nintendo will handle this, after all the big wigs on Nintendo have said that the Wii 2 isn’t coming anytime soon.

A Brief History of Zelda

zelda graffitti.jpg

On February 21st, 1986, Nintendo revolutionized the gaming industry yet again, with the arrival of the Legend of Zelda for the Famicom, the Japanese console that would be rebranded the more familiar Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) for American markets. Hard to believe, but today marks the 25th birthday of Princess Zelda and her plucky little green-hatted perennial savoir, Link.
In honor of a quarter century of one of gaming’s most beloved franchises, we’re highlighting the titles that have continued to push the gaming envelope for the past two and a half decades.

Nintendo 3DS Launching With 18 Titles

Nintendo today confirmed the names of the 18 titles that will hit the market when its long awaited glasses-free 3D gaming portable, the Nintendo 3DS is launched on March 27th. At launch, users will be able to pick up Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, The Sims 3, Madden NFL Football, Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Shadow Wars, Pilotwings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats, Rayman 3D, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Bust-a-Move Universe, and more.

All of the aforementioned titles will run $39.95–the system itself will set you back $249.99. The 3DS will come preloaded with Mii Maker, Face Raiders, and a few other lite proprietary apps. All in all, a pretty promising start for the latest addition to Nintendo’s industry dominating portable systems.

Activision and Sega show off Wappy Dog dogbot / Nintendo DS game at Toy Fair 2011

Toy Fair 2011 isn’t quite as big a deal as say, CES or MWC, but it still has its fair share of nifty plaything gadgets. One jewel of the show is Sega’s Wappy Dog toy that interfaces with Activision’s Nintendo DS title of the same name. In what amounts to the logical evolutionary conclusion of the artist formerly known as Tamagotchi, Wappy Dog allows folks to communicate with their digital pets not only via the DS, but also by playing with and training their pooch’s robotic doppelgänger. After playing with DS Wappy, the game automatically syncs up with the toy bot to keep it from developing multiple personality disorder. Though currently a prototype, the toy can dance (hopefully with a little more flava than its iDog cousin), whine, and bark in response to your child’s interactions, and is slated for a release this fall at an unknown price point. No need to thank us for finding your next family pet.

Have A PS3 Yet? You Can Always Get One On eBay!

This article was written on November 17, 2006 by CyberNet.

Playstation 3

So the Playstation 3 gaming machine is finally out! Millions of people have stood outside stores and malls for hours upon hours just to be one of the first to get their hands on the $600 PS3. From the looks of it there are around 8,000 of those people who didn’t even buy the system for themselves!

Yep, eBay is the marketplace for these bad boys right now with average selling prices floating between $2,000 and $3,500. And then there are always the jokesters that are paying over $20 million for a system. It actually looks like it may have been worth standing in line to pick one of these up because I know I could have found a place where 8-hours would have been plenty soon enough…and then I would be guaranteed to profit nearly $1,400! That’s almost $200 per hour that I would have made for standing in line. The 30 degree (Fahrenheit) weather doesn’t make that very appetizing though.

Now we’re moving on to the Nintendo Wii which is shipping on Sunday, November 19th. People who have reserved the system are selling their pre-order on eBay but it doesn’t even come close to the insane prices that the Playstation 3′s are going for. The Wii pre-orders look like they’re selling for $600-$1000 on average.

I just can’t get over how much people pay for a video game system. At a minimum price of $500 for the Playstation 3, along with the very low supply and high demand, I don’t think a lot of parents will be thrilled this year when kids ask for a new system for Christmas. Sony has had good timing to get this released in time for the holidays but there is no way that they will be able to keep up with the demand. I imagine that, much like the Xbox 360, the stores will be constantly stocked with these systems by February…so if you want one you should just sit tight and hold on to your wallet!

Thanks to MetaMan for reminding me to post about this!
