Toshiba’s TG01 brings glück to Germany with O2 exclusivity

Toshiba’s TG01 and its surprisingly awesome color bar-centric UI will soon be saying “guten tag” to its German friends. O2’s announced that it’ll be the exclusive carrier for the phone in Deutschland and will launch it sometime this summer, with mum being the word currently on price. So far it’s the only TG01 launch we’ve heard about on this or any other planet, but we’d reckon a few more carriers will be chiming in soon to pick up the device for their respective countries.

Nokia irks UK carriers with decision to include Skype on N97

Nokia made plenty of folks happy with its decision to include Skype on its new N97 handset, and future N-series devices, but it looks like the usual cadre of UK carriers aren’t among them, and they’re now making their displeasure quite clear. That includes O2 and Orange, who are apparently threatening to refuse stock of the N97 unless Nokia strips out the Skype client, a point they have reportedly made directly to Nokia in “high-level discussions.” Another unnamed “operator source” was apparently even more blunt, saying that this is “another example of them trying to build an ecosystem that is all about Nokia and reduces the operator to a dumb pipe,” adding that, “some people like 3 may be in a position where it could make sense to accept that. But if you spend upwards of £40m per year building your brand, you don’t want to be just a dumb pipe do you?” For its part, Nokia seems to be staying mum on the matter for the time being, though it’s tough to see a handset like the N97 just sitting on the shelf, so it seems like one party or the other will have to give sooner or later.

OpenFrame and O2 caught canoodling in the wild

Our good friend Mr. BlurryCam managed to steady his (or her) hands a bit and snap a few shots of a working OpenFrame, complete with an on-screen widget indicating the multimedia phone’s apparently found itself a home with European carrier O2. Additionally, it looks like traded in last season’s iPhone duds for something in a more BlackBerry motif. O2 launches HTC Advantage as Xda Flint, curiously aims at education sector

How do you make a niche handheld that’s been out for over a year relevant again? Why, aim it at the unsuspecting education market, of course! The Xda Flint, which we first saw emerge back in early December, is officially being introduced to the world today by O2. If the device looks at all familiar, it’s because it is — we’re looking at a re-branded Advantage X7510, with 16GB of internal storage, a 5-inch VGA display, quad-band connectivity, WiFi, HSDPA, a 3 megapixel camera and Windows Mobile 6.1 running the show. The odd thing here isn’t that the Advantage is getting a new life, it’s that O2 is targeting youngsters with a yearning to learn; it’s suggesting that this device is perfect for reading eBooks, taking electronic notes and accessing knowledge portals. Of course, we’d argue a netbook with a non-mobile OS would be far more suitable, but what do we know?
