Kenwood lights up your life with prototype OLED-illumed speakers

Details are scarce on these new speakers from Kenwood, but if you find yourself frequently faced with a lamp-or-noise dilemma, we might’ve just stumbled upon the solution. The prototype flat speakers, developed by Junji Kido of Yamagata University in Japan, are inexplicably surfaced with white Lumiblade-style OLED lights — we’re not sure what that does for the sound, but we probably won’t be trading in our studio monitors in anticipation of this brightly lit conjectured future.

Philips’ OLED wall makes its video debut

We already caught sight of some of Philips’ new OLED lighting concepts, but when it comes to something like a massive OLED wall there’s really no substitute for a proper video, and Philips itself has now kindly provided one for all to enjoy. As you can see for yourself after the break, the wall reacts directly to folks passing by, which turns out to be a surefire to get folks dancing and more generally make fools of themselves — all in the name of progress, of course. If that’s not enough OLED for one day, you can also check out a slightly less entertaining video of Philips’ OLED chandelier concept, which is a tad less interactive but considerably more likely to turn into an actual product.

Philips shows off Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts

As promised, Philips has now taken the wraps off its first few Lumiblade OLED lighting concepts which, judging from Philips’ boasting, could well change your life and ours. Now on display at the Euroluce International Lighting Fair in Milan, the concepts are divided into consumer and professional groups, the former of which includes ceiling-mounted products like the one pictured above, as well as some slightly more straightforward desk lamps like the one pictured after the break. What’s more, each lighting device also boasts at least some degree of interactivity, including the ability to recognize hand gestures or, in the case of the professional lighting fixtures, react to passers-by. Interestingly, however, none of the products are actually full-on OLED lamps, with each also supplemented by some LUXEON Power LEDs to provide some more usable lighting.

Ito Electronics shows off waterproof OLED displays

Details are about as light as can be on this one, but it looks like Japan’s Ito Electronics has developed some sort of special “packaging technology” that can make OLED displays fully waterproof, which could be particularly used for watches, cellphones, or that fish tank home theater you’ve always dreamed of. Of course, there’s no word on any actual products just yet, nor is there any indication of possible transparent waterproof displays — or, at least, none that anyone has seen.

Transparent OLED rearview mirror both dazzles and distracts

Although we’ve been hearing about transparent OLEDs for years now, mum’s been the word on an actual product. So far the focus has been on Germany, but it looks like some interesting things have been going down in Korea as well. Researchers at ETRI (the flexible OLED folks) have apparently applied for 51 patents both nationally and internationally for the tech, including one for a transparent oxide resistor that helps increase the aperture ratio of AMOLEDs. And while all this is going down, NeoView KOLON has unveiled a new prototype rearview mirror that utilizes a transparent OLED display for — well, displaying things. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the road, eh?

Samsung: OLED screens on half of mobile phones within 5 years

Truthfully, we wouldn’t put too much stock in that headline considering that Samsung Mobile Display, a company that makes its ends off of selling active-matrix OLEDs, is the source. But on the other hand, we can definitely see it coming to fruition. According to a new report, said outfit has stated that OLED screens of some sort will be on over half of all mobile phones (not just smartphones, mind you) within the next five years, and that these same power-sipping displays will be on 20 percent of digital cameras and 30 percent of portable game players (PSP2, anyone?) within the same window of time. While it may seem a bit far-fetched now, we actually have good reason to believe that OLED adoption will indeed skyrocket on the small scale; it’s those big screen TVs that we’re worried only our grandchildren will truly enjoy.

Pilotfish’s Ondo music editing mobile concept puts new twist on smartphones

It’s been nearly three years since the Onyx tickled our imagination, but Pilotfish is looking to completely melt our brains with its latest concept. The Munich-based industrial design firm has just introduced its Ondo music editing mobile, which is half cellphone, half music mixer and thoroughly amazing. In theory, the phone would boast a small mixing panel, three removable recording sticks with internal memory and a bendable center to give music lovers the ability to insert pitch bends and relieve stress. Essentially, the trio of OLED-infused sticks serves two purposes: when installed, they’re the main phone panel, and when removed, they can be clipped onto instruments for recording purposes. Afterwards, they can be swapped with other Ondo owners or edited on the fly right on the device itself. Needless to say, there’s a better shot at you winning the lottery than seeing this thing hit mass production, but you can feel free to dream by checking the full release, Q&A and demonstration video just past the break.

Sony to finally unveil larger-screen OLED TVs at IFA?

We’ve been waiting for what seems like ages for the next iteration of the XEL-1 to dash in and swoop us off of our feet, but frankly, we’re growing anxious. As the world waits for a commercial-ready OLED TV that’s larger than a standard sheet of paper, industry insiders down at the IFA briefings in Malta this past week believe that Sony could be gearing up to make all sorts of hopes and dreams come true this September. Jens Heithecker, executive director of Messe Berlin, which organizes the IFA trade fair, noted that “IFA is a trade show which is focused more on market-ready technologies,” hinting that anything we see in just a few short months will be prepared for release into the wild. We’re also told that more “ultra-widescreen” 21:9 sets — like Philips’ masterpiece — could be on display, not to mention scores of internet-ready HDTVs and a Samsung set with refresh rates of 400Hz. Needless to say, IFA’s shaping up to be quite a show for the television sector, so you may want to think twice (or thrice, if necessary) about snagging a new panel on August 31st.

Philips’ OLED Lumiblade showcased in variety of shapes, sizes, and colors this month in Milan

If you’re planning to be in Milan later this month, and we know a good lot of you are, we suggest stopping by Superstudio Piú in Zona Tortona between April 22 and 27 to check out Philips’ OLED Lumiblade exhibit. The company’s promising lighting with dozens of different shapes, sizes and colors will be on display. Can’t say we’d necessarily call OLED a “magic material,” as the press release does multiple times, but with illuminated designs like this, they’re putting up a good argument. Now how about bringing some of these fancy designs to the mass market?

Kyocera shows off preposterous, beautiful EOS folding OLED phone concept

We’re big fans of reality and feasibility, we swear, but something like this “EOS” concept phone Kyocera was showing off at CTIA is just too good to pass up. The handset folds up into what could roughly be described as a wallet shape, but folds out into two configurations: portrait QWERTY mode (pictured), and full-on widescreen OLED display (after the break). Samsung was showing similar screen-folding folding abilities, but a much less impressive handset, at CES. Things get even wilder, tough, with Kyocera envisioning shape memory keys that can morph flat when not in use, and a kinetic charging method based on piezoelectric generators and Mary Poppins. Sure, our great grandkids are going to have a good laugh at us for thinking this is lovable, but they always were a bunch of theoretical brats. Kyocera plans on implementing some of the concept ideas into its “near future” lineup of devices. We’ll see how that pans out.
