OQO officially launches Gobi / OLED-equipped model 2+, we get hands-on

We already knew a fresh OQO handheld would be headed to Digital Experience! here at CES, and lo and behold the model 2+ has arrived in our oh-so-fortunate hands. The 800 x 480 (native) OLED touchscreen was positively gorgeous to look at, and the Qualcomm Gobi dual-mode HSPA / EV-DO WWAN chipset was much appreciated. It’s also sporting a 1.86GHz Intel Atom CPU, 2GB of RAM, WiFi / Bluetooth, DirectX 9 and H.264 video decode support, 3.5 hours of battery life (7 hours on the double capacity cell), a world keyboard and a global power supply. The unit checks in at under a pound and can support 1,9200 x 1,200 external displays with HDMI / DVI / VGA interfaces. Get ready to lust after one (we already are) when it ships in 1H 2009 starting at $999.

Eyes on with LG’s near-production 15-inch OLED TV: come on summer

While Sony’s OLED TV is little more than a beautiful, 11-inch novelty, LG is swaggering dangerously close to a respectable kitchen TV with this 15-inch AMOLED TV prototype. On display here at CES and planned for a production run sometime this summer, the image is absolutely stunning — every bit as impressive as the Sony’s XEL-1. Nothing else compares to the incredible contrast achieved by these OLED displays. Have a look in the gallery — we’ve got the prototype pictured with and without its chubby TV bezel. It’s credit-card thin (0.8-mm) and only on Engadget.

Sony touchscreen Walkman NWZ-X1000 OLED player hands-on!

Sony’s press event is just about to start, but we managed to sneak away and grab some snaps of the heavily-guarded new OLED touchscreen Walkman NWZ-X1000. It’s under some major glass and lights and we were working fast, so we apologize for any blurriness, but that’s the price of exclusives, kids. Check back soon for the official shots during the presser — and don’t worry, we’re on the hunt for the VAIO P.

LG to produce 15-inch OLED panel this summer

LG to produce 15-inch OLED panel this summerHas your $2,500 XEL-1 display already started to show a case of the dimming blues? If so, and if you can go without seeing Cookie Monster in his natural hue for a few more months, you may have another OLED replacement option after this summer. LG is indicating it will begin producing a 15-inch panel in June of this year. No word on whether it’ll match the Sony’s 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, but it will offer a higher resolution of 1,366 x 768, and LG is pledging a 30,000 hour shelf life. We’ll see about that.

Wrist-worn flexible OLED prototype is for the military, but kids like it too

Wrist-worn flexible OLED prototype is for the military, but kids like it too

Flexible OLED displays are becoming more and more commonplace (and festive), despite not actually being available in any devices you can buy just yet. When that day finally comes, Universal Display Corporation thinks one of those gadgets will be something like the above: a wearable, flexible, 4-inch prototype screen that CES attendees will be able to check out and maybe even try on — albeit uncomfortably. It’s been developed with military applications in mind (they always get the cool stuff first), but bendy consumer devices are naturally envisioned as well. There’s no word on when we’ll start seeing them in passports or flexi-phones, but we’re thinking we have a while to wait yet.

OQO bringing Atom-powered Model 2+ UMPC to CES

If it feels like forever to you since OQO’s Model 02 hit the market, your instincts are pretty darn good. But if you were overly optimistic that the Atom-powered prototype it showed off back in August (pictured) would eventually become a reality, you — sir or madam — take today’s golden crown. In a recent Digital Experience! email blasted out to media members worldwide (full blurb is after the break), we’re very clearly told that OQO will be on hand to demonstrate its new Model 2+. Said UMPC will pack a 1.86GHz Intel Atom CPU, a touchscreen OLED display, 2GB of RAM and global 3G connectivity. OQO even goes so far as to say that it will offer performance “up to twice as fast as its predecessor.” Did our heart just skip a beat over a UMPC? Why, yes it did!

Samsung’s S8300 slider packs AMOLED display, 8-megapixel camera

If Samsung’s Soul had your innermost emotions shakin’, wait until you wrap your retinas around this. The S8300, which is said to be an upgrade from the aforementioned mobile — will reportedly come stacked with 7.2Mbps HSDPA connectivity, a 2.8-inch AMOLED touchscreen, 8-megapixel camera, inbuilt GPS, an FM radio with RDS, 60MB of onboard memory, DivX playback and an “anti-scratch / anti-fingerprint coated duraluminium chassis.” There are no promises that it’ll be ready for a CES showcase, though we’re hearing that a MWC launch is expected in a worst case scenario. Lots more images are hiding in the read link.
