Caltrain sighting suggests Palm Pre may be real

Hard to believe, we know, but another seemingly real Pre in the wild finally has us thinking that this whole “webOS” business Palm keeps yammering about might be an actual product after all. Time will tell.

Palm Pre spotted in the wild, possibly running YouTube

It’s not clear exactly where these pics came from, but here’s the Palm Pre, running what appears to be a YouTube app and the email app. We’re of two minds on these: there’s no doubt there are devices in the wild, so these shots could be totally real, but something about them just feels off — that “Search All Videos” font seems way more Sprint than Palm, for example. Here’s hoping we find out what’s what real soon. One more shot after the break.

Update: One more pic here, showing it off next to an iPhone.

New Pre Classic emulator video shows off 3D gaming prowess

The last time we saw the Pre’s Classic Palm OS emulator in action, we had a few lingering questions in our mind, chief among them being how well can it game? From the looks of this latest video, released by Motion Apps to answer that very question, pretty well so far. In addition to confirming sound support for the latest build, we also get a brief glimpse of the software handling 3D driver GTS World Racer. Of course, seeing this makes us even more curious about the gaming potential for the native webOS, but alas, we’re in the cold there. In the meantime, check out some classic 3D racing in the video after the break.

Palm Pre finds a totally unofficial home in China

Before phones show up at retail, they start showing up in totally random places in China — it’s basically a law of physics. And once that happens, they almost inevitably end up posted in a forum somewhere, and… well, you can gather where that leads. Chinese firm Ludle — which, according to its own description is in the business of “exploiting, producing and selling” — somehow came across a Pre (or possibly just an empty shell thereof), and a staff member took the time to do a quick set of comparo shots against a Centro and iPhone 3G. He notes that the Pre gets clogged with fingerprints as easily as the iPhone but handles scratching on the back a little better; the front is a different story, though, where the iPhone’s glass display wins. He goes on to say that the phone is currently in mass production (we’d certainly hope so), but what we don’t know is whether we’re looking at a CDMA version for Sprint or the GSM variant destined for sundry networks around the globe. We’ll take either, personally.

Touchstone dock for Palm Pre to run $69.99?

Sick of Pre rumors? We certainly hope not, because some magical font of believable Pre data seems to have started gushing fresh information recently with no signs of slowing down. Latest to the table is a sticker price for the Touchstone dock, an inductive charger that’ll work with a special magnetized non-stick battery cover for the Pre to juice your baby’s batteries without a plug — and it looks like you’re going to have to pony up some serious cash for the pleasure. Screens on some computer somewhere deep inside Sprint are apparently pegging the Touchstone at a stiff $69.99, which is an awful lot to pay to simply charge your phone in style; cool, sure, but $70 worth of cool?

Palm Pre launching no earlier than May 16 according to leaked doc?

We’ve been made privy to some Sprint planning documentation that implies that the carrier is looking to get all its Pre ducks in a row by May 16, which would suggest that there’s no way in hell it’s launching any earlier than that. Ultimately, that could mean we’re looking at a launch on the 17th — a Sunday, as Sprint launches often are — or any time after that, but since Palm continues to reaffirm its first half commitment, we’d say that we’re now down to a window between 5/17 and 6/30. Awesome.

Palm Pre spotted just minding its own business in San Fran?

We can’t vouch for the authenticity of these shots, but the fact that there’s fully five of them posted certainly lends some element of legitimacy. What’s more, the first half ’09 window is still very much confirmed by Palm, so let’s be honest: there pretty much have to be Pres floating around in some circles at this point. We didn’t necessarily anticipate “some circles” to mean “two peeps chilling at San Francisco’s Bring Your Own Wheel race,” but hey, whatever works. Catch another glorious shot in the wild after the break.

Palm Pre Touchstone to be an entire product line, not just a charging dock

Although Palm’s reps basically stick to the same script when giving out those lengthy Pre walkthrough demos, every now and again they’ll let something interesting slip — like the fact that the Touchstone inductive charging dock is just the first product in an entire line of Touchstone wireless products. It’s not clear if that simply means that “Touchstone” will be Palm’s wireless power branding, or if there will be Touchstone products that do more than simply charge devices, but we’re certainly eager to find out more — and hopefully soon. Video clip after the break.

Sprint puts a vacation blackout on May — Palm Pre launch likely?

Well, we’re circling in, folks. Hot on the heels of learning that Sprint employees have the Palm Pre in hand for training, there’s word from all sides that Sprint has put a vacation blackout on the month of May for retail employees, which would seem to imply that the Pre will be launched sometime in there. We saw similar vacation freezes on AT&T’s end for both iPhone launches, and those ended up fairly accurate. We haven’t seen this memo personally, or threatened any Sprint employees for confirmation with shivs fashioned out of Samsung Instincts yet, so we’ll keep an eye out for any other information to confirm or deny. Meanwhile, check out this Pre holster!

Sprint employees now training with the Palm Pre?

We’re not totally sure here, but it sounds like Sprint employees are now being trained on the anxiously awaited Palm Pre. Over at PreThinking, they seem to have gotten their paws on an internal Sprint email that says that “employees can expect training to start in April as well as multiple communications to get them excited and ready to help our customers” for the Pre. Being of a curious nature, they apparently followed up to ask if the training had indeed begun, receiving this mysteriously veiled reply: “I would like to inform that Sprint is in the process of providing the training for the new Palm Pre. Once it’s launched, Sprint will be ready to serve their valued customers regarding the Palm Pre.” We’ve seen the new ads all over the place, and it was really only a matter of time, so we’re not exactly shocked and awed at this one, but you tell us: what does it all mean?
