Philips sticks to its guns with 16GB GoGear Muse PMP

Think you’ve seen this one before? Close, but no cigar. Philips’ GoGear Muse doesn’t deviate much from the path that has been chosen for it (and fittingly so, might we add), boasting a predictably glossy motif, 16GB of internal storage space and a 3-inch display. As it overtakes the Opus for the company’s top-of-the-line player, it also gains support for BMP, GIF, PNG, OGG, APE, Real Video and Real Audio formats, and just in case you’re curious, it’ll also handle those ultra-rare “MP3” things as well. Philips asserts that users could see up to 25 hours of audio playback on a single charge, while watching Family Guy re-runs could suck it dry in just 5 hours. As with pretty much everything else that Philips produces these days, it’ll first hit Singapore for S$349 (or around $244 in Greenbacks), with only a faint chance of ever seeing significant action here in North America. One more look is after the break.

Video: Philips CushionSpeaker laptop stand combines cushion and speaker

It’s half speaker, half cushion and 100 percent useful. Philips‘ recently unveiled CushionSpeaker laptop stand is designed for the bedridden among us, combining a soft laptop stand with a built-in speaker for amplifying those lap-based movie sessions. Of course, this thing probably won’t do much for heat dispersion, but for those also looking for a personal heater, this thing just might be magical. The integrated speaker connects to one’s laptop via USB, which just might put off netbook owners struggling to get by with just a couple of those very sockets. There’s no mention of a US price and release date, but whatever it is, you know you’ll pay it. The cutest video introduction you ever did see is waiting just past the break. [Warning: PDF read link]

Philips serves up two new Senseo brewmakers at IFA, still won’t dethrone Starbucks

It’s been a full year since we asked if a few off-the-wall renders were indicative of Philips’ next-generation Senseo, but at long last, the next in the long line of successful coffee making machines has come to light. Seven years after the first Senseo hit the scenes, the heralded machine will finally be made available in a new “square shape,” with the appropriately named Quadrante doing everything a Senseo does but with edges rather than contours. Said machine will be available in Dark Stroke Black and Bright Style White, while the limited edition version by Marcel Wanders — which hearkens back to the classic design — spices things up with some fancy sequins atop a translucent red or translucent grey finish. For the java lovers in attendance, feel free to give the read links below a once over, and be sure to raise a glass to us while you’re at it. [Warning: PDF read links]

Video: Philips’ 3rd gen Aurea ‘egg’ remote gets put through the paces

What better to complement your new trippy, edge-glowing Philips 3rd gen Aurea HDTV than an egg-shaped remote? Our friends at Engaget Spanish hunted down the controller and walked away impressed at its build construction and design — but not before capturing numerous pictures and footage, of course. There was some concern with the rigidity of the buttons, but nothing worth squabbling over on this bundled device. Hit up the read link for the full, machine-translated impressions, or affix your gaze on the pics and video below.

Philips gets stylish with BDP9500 and BDP7500 Blu-ray players

Philips has definitely shifted most of its consumer electronics efforts into continents not named North America, but given that IFA’s taking place in Berlin, it makes sense to see so much new kit flowing from the company. The latest wares to make their debut on the show floor is the BDP9500 and BDP7500 Blu-ray players, both of which handle 7.1 audio with poise and offer up 1080p video playback for those with BD libraries. The flagship 9500 also includes a Qdeo video processor and a sleek aluminum shell, not to mention Burr-Brown analog-to-digital converters and DVD upscaling for those other movies. There’s no mention of pricing and availability just yet, but with the holiday shopping season just around the bend, we’d guess the folks at Philips are working hard to get these out on the double [Warning: PDF read link]

Philips debuts Soundbar with Blu-ray, Home Theaters galore

If there’s one thing we’ve always maintained here at Engadget, it’s that “HD people are good people.” Hell, we have a whole website devoted to HD, home entertainment, and the whole “HD lifestyle,” only because you warm our hearts so much. And the folks at Philips are obviously on the same tip — as proven not only by all the wonderful products of theirs that grace these pages regularly, but by all the surround sound gear they’ve schlepped to IFA this year, including: a new SoundBar with Ambisound, featuring a Blu-ray disc player, optional iPod dock, 7.1 surround sound, and DoubleBASS. Available in black (HTS8160B) or white (HTS8161B). Just the thing for those of you who think that a single speaker could somehow replace seven (plus one) in the surround sound stakes. Also on hand for the less credulous, the company is unveiling a number of home theater systems with the now-mandatory Blu-ray playback, including: three separate 5.1 surround affairs for folks with on varying budgets, and a two speaker / one sub combo for those of you who want to try out “Dolby Virtual Speaker” technology after all. If all this appeals to you, you have two options — check out the PR (after the break) or hit the read link to sift through a wild’n’wooly PDF.

Philips Aurea reaches 3rd generation, demands more allowance

Aww, just look at him, Philips’ Aurea TV’s all growed up and showing off the latest in LED edge-lighting. This third generation set features the same transparent Active Frame now sporting 250 LEDs with a promise of “exact” Ambilight color matching” with what you see on the screen. The result, according to Philips and our own experience with Ambilight over the years, is a more immersive viewing experience — or maybe the experience is just peculiar, we can never be too sure. The set still features the same, albeit tweaked, motion sensitive remote control and adds Net TV for quick access to content from YouTube, eBay, TomTom and more depending upon your location. As to the display, well, it’s still 42-inches by the looks of things, with a Full HD (1920×1080) resolution, 100Hz refresh, and snappy 2-ms response as before. The box itself feature an integrated DVB-T/DVB-C/CI+ HDTV receiver, 5x HDMI 1.3a EasyLink inputs, WiFi, Ethernet, and a DLNA-compliant network link for accessing media off your PC. Coming soon, that’s when.

Philips 56-inch 21:9 3D TV’s future is so bright we had to wear shades

If you haven’t noticed, 3D is going to be big in 2010. Not at Philips though, at least not yet. Instead of charging in to the market like Sony, Philips is willing to hedge its bets and wait on consumer demand. Consumers, of course, are waiting for content. And hey, maybe everybody’s wrong and quad-HD will be the next big thing to drive TV sales. Regardless, Philips wants everyone to know that its technology is ready when you are so its got a 3D prototype Blu-ray player and stunning 3D version of its 56-inch Cinema 21:9 TV here at IFA in Berlin. While the idea of watching movies in 3D sounds like a novelty, the idea of gaming in 3D is downright compelling — awkward passive polarized glasses be damned!

Wireless power standard almost here, named Qi (of all things)

We’re not sure whether to chalk this up to the fact that every good brand name is already taken, or to some folks’ delight in torturing us with obscure pronunciation — but whatever the case may be, it looks like the Wireless Power Consortium have finally come up with a spec for Wireless Power, and for it they’re using a name (and logo) probably dreamt up after repeat viewings of Big Trouble in Little China: Qi. Pronounced Ch’i (you know, as in “prana” or “life force”), the first universal wireless standard has achieved 0.95 for interoperability testing a mere seven months after setting their eyes on the goal, paving the way for an “accelerated” acceptance of 1.0, according to a company spokesperson. The Qi standard applies to devices 5 watts and below, and members of the consortium include Duracell, National Semiconductor, Olympus, Philips, Samsung, Sanyo, ST-Ericsson, and Shenzhen Sangfei Consumer Communications. At any rate, it’s nice to hear about something happening ahead of schedule for once.
