MSI unveils army of cheap PMPs for China

Taking a break from thin laptops and all-in-one desktops, MSI’s announced five PMPs for China. On the lower end is the 198 yuan (US $29) MV622, with a 2.4-inch LCD screen, 2GB storage and three colors to choose from (pictured). The MV651 has a larger, 3-inch screen with 400 x 240 resolution, TV-out, FM radio, and 4GB capacity for 299 ($44) yuan. The MV652 adds touch screen — the only one to do so, it seems — and e-book reading functionality, all for a price tag of $51 for 4GB / $58 for 8GB. The 4.3-inch MV881 lacks touch screen but otherwise boasts similar specs to its predecessor — it’ll set you back $58 (4GB) to $73 (8GB). The only one sporting 720p video and S-video out is the 8GB MV882 for $58. All units support e-dictionary, some game functionality, and a hefty number of audio / video codecs. Call it a hunch, but we don’t expect a good lot of these — if any — to be making a stateside appearance anytime soon.

Cube H100HD PMP does 1080i in a tiny package

Cube H100HD PMP does 1080i in a tiny package

Thought 720p output from a PMP was impressive? Try 1080i on for size. Yes, Cube has seemingly one-upped itself, introducing a new PMP called the H100HD that, like its predecessor, sports a 5-inch LCD and support for a variety of video and audio formats, but adds in an FM tuner, support for simple Flash games, and another step up the HD resolution ladder, all in a package that’s a bit more svelte than before. And yes, it still does 720p output for those progressive types. No information on price yet, but since the last one sold for under $75 don’t expect it to break the bank — also don’t expect it to show up at whatever electronics retailers are still in business where you are.

RAmos RM990 iOne2 PMP looks surprisingly desirable

RAmos definitely isn’t the most respected name in PMPs here in the US, but as of late, it’s done a commendable job of staying relevant… at least on the design front, anyway. The firm’s latest concoction, which goes by RM990 iOne2, is a touchscreen-heavy media player that’s clearly not anorexic. Specs wise, we’re told that it features a 3-inch WQVGA touch panel, haptic feedback, a built-in accelerometer, 4GB of internal storage and support for a whole gaggle of file formats. Not bad for the low, low asking price of just 399 yuan (around $58), but it’s hardly worth a trip to Shanghai.

GiiNii’s Movit Mini Android tablet coming in October, Movit Maxx in January

We were pretty stoked by GiiNii’s Movit Mini when we got some hands-on time with it at CES this year, and while the 4.3-inch, Android-powered tablet was originally due out in the middle of this year, the company’s now targeting an October 1st ship date for the Mini and January 1st, 2010 for the 7-inch Max. Specs look to be the same as before, although given the new date we’d say Cupcake is now all but guaranteed. Mum’s still the official word on pricing, but last we heard the Mini was expected to cost “less than the iPod touch” — here’s hoping the company manages to keep that goal.

LEGO MP3 player: another brick in your kid’s wall of sound

So this is pretty out-of-the-ordinary looking. LEGO‘s recently-announced MP3 player — produced through a partnership with Digital Blue — fits in nicely with the rest of the company’s kiddie gadget offerings, though we’ll admit that this is probably the first one we’re truly tempted to check out for ourselves. These bad boys have 2GB of storage, LCD displays, and unlimited attitude. It’s got that sweet brick shape that brings to mind memories of our olden days while staying on top of the latest tech that kids today demand… you know, MP3s of Miley Cyrus and stuff. Right? The MP3 players — in multi-color and pinkish (for girls) — will be available sometime this summer for $39.99

Teclast’s M66 PMP features UI, display, buttons

If we were being sarcastic, we’d probably characterize Teclast as an exciting and dynamic outfit whose gear we always look forward to getting our hands on. Still, we were pretty surprised when the initial product renders for the M66 portrayed the device as little more than a glorified digiframe — a Rockchip RK2806-packing digiframe, but still not very charming. All that said, we’re relieved to report that in its current state the bad boy is a bit more palatable, sporting a 5-inch display, 720p decoding support, and support for H.264 MKV, RM / RMVB, and AVI video. And buttons. Still no word on release date or availability. Peep the original pic after the break.

iriver P7 unboxing and review

We’ve been getting friendly with iriver’s latest touchscreen masterpiece over the past few days, and have a few impressions to share. In many ways, though, the P7 is exactly what the pictures and spec sheet make it out to be: great design, great specs, few surprises, and little in the way of “interesting” functionality. While the Apples and Microsofts of the world keep on merging the world of PMPs with PDAs with phones, iriver seems content here to build a “mere” media player and leave it at that. Read our full impressions after the break.

Cowon releases 32GB S9 PMP in Korea

Cowon‘s done a commendable job in making the S9 a force to be reckoned with in the PMP arena, but the 16GB maximum has likely caused quite a few music aficionados to look elsewhere. At long last, the company is releasing a 32GB flavor over in South Korea, though it’ll cost you a stiff ₩379,000 ($287) for the privilege of ownership. There’s no word on a US release, but we’d wager that it’ll be here within a month or two. Right, Cowon?

Special edition Mintpass goes dark, gets DMB

Special edition Mintpass goes dark, gets DMB

Tired of pale gadget offerings? Live in South Korea? If “yes” on both counts you may want to keep your eyes open for what looks to be a special edition of the tiny CE-powered Mintpad MID. It not only offers the rich, ebony exterior that its pasty predecessor could only dream of, but also adds DMB functionality for capturing all the digitally broadcasted media floating through the Asian aether. The announcement page for the Mintpad DMB was hastily pulled after fans picked up on it, but this tease proves to be true look for the dark device to sell for ₩239,000, about $180, or a $30 premium over the vanilla version — of which we’re still waiting on that promised domestic release.

CUBE B52HD PMP handles codecs galore, HD out for silly cheap

It’s not like we’re ever going to bump into this in our local electronics store, but boy is this CUBE B52HD portable media player tempting. The thing has a 5-inch 480 x 272 LCD, all the codecs we could ask for (including fan faves like FLAC, OGG, along with plenty of video options), 1280 x 720 video out, 8GB of built-in storage and an expansion slot of some sort. We’re not sure about input methods, but hopefully the interface involves Brendan Fraser to some extent. The best news? All this can be theoretically yours for a mere 499 yuan, about $73 US.
