MotionPower speed bump installed at NJ Burger King, McDonald’s and Wendy’s feel slighted

We can’t say we doubted that New Energy’s MotionPower speed bump would actually be installed at a New Jersey Burger King, but it’s always refreshing to see a plan morph into reality. As of now, those in Hillside heading to have it their way will cruise over the kinetic energy harvester before retrieving their grub, which has the potential to create around 2,000 watts of electricity from a car hitting it at five miles per hour. As of now, the hump is simply there to test storage potential, but New Energy is hoping that the next generation of the tech could be placed at a variety of fast foot eateries, parking lots, toll booth plazas and anywhere else where folks need a little assistance in maintaining a sensible speed. Nagano Japan shows off yet another contactless charging system

It’s been little over a month since Showa Aircraft demonstrated a contactless charging system that boasts 90% efficiency over a distance of 60 centimeters — and now what is this? Nagano Japan Radio Co Ltd. is touting a similar system that works up to one meter, with a pretty incredible 95% efficiency at a distance of 40 centimeters. According to Tech-On, the company is currently hard at work trying to ramp the output up from “several tens” of watts to several kilowatts. As opposed to Showa’s recent outing (which relies on electromagnetic induction), this system uses magnetic resonance to achieve its effect. However, as this method “drastically lowers” its efficiency when the position of the sending and receiving units are displaced, the team designed a system that automatically detects coil displacement and reorients itself accordingly. The company hopes to someday charge electronic vehicles with the thing, although we’d be happy if it merely enabled us to stow our WildCharge pads out of sight. They seriously clash with the decor here at Engadget HQ.

Ford’s vehicle-to-grid communications system charges plug-in whips on command

If you’re dreaming of always plugging your future AC-friendly hybrid in during the wee hours of the morning in order to juice up for the lowest price, you’re certainly using your noodle. But what about instances where you can’t choose when exactly you’ll be plugging in? Fret not, as Bill Ford and Company has you covered. The automaker, in collaboration with a slew of utility partners, has today introduced an intelligent vehicle-to-grid communications system that would theoretically enable vehicle owners to plug their ride in and tell it precisely when to begin and / or end charging via the navigation screen. Users could also define the completion time for charging or the desired rates in order to better control spending, though all that planning could be ruined by some random prankster who decides to yank your cable when you’re not looking. And really, who cares about saving a penny or two on charging when you can get two hundred and thirty miles per gallon? Oh, wait…

Glass leaves sweat to generate electricity, get nervous in public situations

Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Michigan and MIT have created glass “leaves” with networks of veiny channels filled with water. The smallest channels extend all the way to the edges of the leaf, where open ends allow water to evaporate, which draws water along the central stem of the leaf — at a rate of about 1.5 centimeters per second. The glass leaves have been wired for electricity by adding metal plates to the walls of the central stems and connecting them to a circuit. Researchers then charge the plates and the water inside the stems creates two conducting layers separated by an insulating layer, which acts as a capacitor. The waterflow is then periodically interrupted with air bubbles, and every time a bubble passes through the plates a small electrical current is generated — about 2 – 5 microvolts per bubble. The team thinks that on a large scale, artificial trees could be use to generate large amounts of energy entirely through evaporation.

Baryonyx to build largest offshore wind farms in the US, power massive data centers

Uh oh Mr. Pickens — looks like you’ve got some competition down in Texas. With the aforesaid energy baron scraping plans to plant 687 massive wind turbines in Texas’ panhandle, Baryonyx has stepped in to do the honors via a slightly different project. Just this past week, Baryonyx won a bid to create a pair of sizable offshore wind farms that Jerry Patterson — Commissioner of the Texas General Land Office — says “could be the biggest offshore wind farms in the nation.” Additionally, another lease was granted for a prospective wind energy development in the panhandle, and now the company is eager to get going on the green energy gigs. The best part of this whole plan involves that actual purpose of the turbines; aside from providing juice for grids, they’ll also be used to energize forthcoming Tier 4 server farms, with a minimum of 750 megawatts of power being pumped to two coastal areas all the while. Ma Earth would be proud.

Integrated circuits with no standby power could be in use by year’s end

There’s certainly no shortage of company’s working to make electronics of all sorts more energy efficient, but NEC and Rohm Co now say that they’re on the verge of a breakthrough that could change things in a big way, and we could possibly see it in “practical use” by the end of this year. As Tech-On! reports, both companies are hard at work on integrated circuits that consume no power at all when they’re in standby mode, and turn themselves on only when power is needed. That’s apparently possible by making the entire chip nonvolatile, as opposed to many current chips that only use nonvolatile merged memory. According to NEC, that’ll let them “cut dissipation for digital consumer electronics in the standby mode to just a few percent of what it is now,” and at no expense of convenience. While NEC isn’t making any promises for the near future just yet, Rohm says that it’ll begin shipping its first custom ICs in the second half of this year, and that the first products using them could start showing up by the end of 2009.

Nikon addresses major D5000 glitch

We’ve fondled Nikon’s D5000 SLR, stacked it against the competition, and read no shortage of reviews. In general everyone seems to love the camera, but there’s apparently one, big, nagging problem: the durned thing won’t always turn on. That’s obviously a no-nonsense sort of glitch and thankfully Nikon isn’t beating around the bush when it comes to addressing it, posting a service advisory today and pledging to follow up next week with a full list of affected serial numbers. If you’re unlucky enough to be mentioned you’ll sadly need to part with your hot new body and let Nikon tear it open, but the company will at least cover shipping to and fro. That’s something, right?

GE’s Smart Grid aims to cut home energy consumption to zero, promote world peace

Judging by the company’s recent infatuation with energy-efficient LED lighting solutions, we’re not at all surprised to see General Electric launching a daunting initiative that aims to cut homeowner energy consumption to zero by 2015. The so-called ‘Smart Grid’ is part of the Net Zero Home Project, which combines solar and wind energy (for on-site power generation) along with specialized appliances that can “communicate with utilities to participate in utility-run demand-response programs.” In other words, these intelligent devices can turn themselves down or off when no one’s around in order to shave peak-time consumption, and the in-your-face nature of always knowing exactly how much juice you’re wasting should also encourage conservation. Of course, we have all ideas that a Smart Grid-certified home will run you quite a bit more than you’re willing to pay, but hey, Ma Earth deserves it — doesn’t she?

Meralco planning internet over power lines in the Philippines

While the concept of channeling the internet over power lines is far from new, it has yet to be implemented in any significant manner. If a top power distributor in the Philippines has its druthers, however, all that will change in the not-too-distant future. Manila Electric Company, better known as Meralco, is gearing up to use its power lines to bring broadband internet to more of the country, which currently sees just 20 million out of its 90 million inhabitants with access. In fact, the company has already made clear that it is “set to implement the pilot test,” with the results guiding it in “determining scope and coverage of the project.” Come to think of it, we’ve got a few dollars to spend on a rural broadband initiative here in the States. Hmm…
