Cortex-M0: smallest, lowest power ARM processor available

If you love superlatives, you’ll love ARM‘s new Cortex-M0. Hailed as the smallest, lowest power and most energy-efficient ARM processor available, this chip reportedly enables MCU developers to “achieve 32-bit performance at an 8-bit price point.” The company asserts that this processor can consume as little as 85 microwatts/MHz (0.085 milliwatts) in an area of under 12K gates when using the ARM 180ULL cell library, and while that’s probably over most of your heads, let’s just say that this thing is ripe for use in medical devices, e-metering, lighting, smart control, gaming accessories and the like. Those looking to get this into their next widget should be thrilled to know that it’s available today for licensing, though you’ll have to phone up someone in the know to talk dollars and cents.

AMD nets final approval to create The Foundry Company

After having to delay the final vote earlier this month due to a lack of participation (d’oh!), AMD has dotted the final ‘i’ in its attempt to spin off semiconductor manufacturing. Said company, along with the Advanced Technology Investment Company, have now secured the final approval necessary to create The Foundry Company. Stockholder approval was the only remaining hurdle to be jumped, and the joint venture transaction is expected to fully close by March 2nd of this year. By the numbers, AMD stockholders approved a proposal to issue 58 million shares of its common stock along with warrants to purchase 35 million shares of its common stock and 35 million shares of the company’s common stock upon exercise of those warrants to an affiliate of the Mubadala Development Company PJSC (perplexing, we know). Now, let’s see if AMD can keep up with Intel’s own $7 billion investment.

TI’s OMAP 4 bringing 1080p support to smartphones and MIDs

Right around this time last year, Texas Instruments was busy showing off its OMAP 3 platform, which enabled 720p playback from a mobile phone. At this year’s MWC, we’ve got a real live handset recording 720p, and TI upping the ante once more with a chip that handles 1080p. For those still with us after being blasted with resolutions, the predictably titled OMAP 4 aims to bring 1080p support, 20 megapixel imaging and “approximately a week of audio play time” to mobiles and MIDs that house it. Granted, TI also calls this stuff “future-proof,” so don’t believe it’s totally incapable of uttering some pretty outlandish stuff. At the heart of the platform is a dual-core ARM Cortex A9 chip, a programmable multimedia engine based on TI’s C64x DSP and a POWERVR SGX540 graphics engine. We’re told that it’ll play nice with Linux variants such as Android and LiMo, Symbian and Windows Mobile, though it’ll have to be mighty impressive to outgun NVIDIA’s Tegra. Battle on, we say.

AMD ushers in five new Phenom II CPUs, benchmarking ensues

Just a month after AMD launched its Phenom II CPUs and Dragon desktop platform, the chip maker is hitting back with five new processors in the quickly expanding line. The newcomers include the planet’s first 45nm triple-core CPU and three more quad-core siblings, all of which can operate in either AM2+ or AM3 sockets. As for performance? We hope your expectations haven’t been set too high, as the chips were generally found to be just “a logical extension of [the company’s] piecemeal upgrade plan and a fill in [the] gap to its lineup.” Reviewers across the web were generally pleased but underwhelmed by test results, with HotHardware noting that “overall, Intel still has the performance edge clock-for-clock and core-for-core.” In fairness, these chips were found to be good for overclocking, and for the right price, we could certainly see a few gamers giving them a go. Probabilistic logic makes microchip more energy efficient

We’ll be straight up with you — there’s a lot of fancy work going on with this one that laypeople will have a tough time grasping, but the long and short of it is this: a team from Rice University (Krishna Palem pictured) and Nanyang Technological University have created a microchip that “uses 30 times less electricity while running seven times faster than today’s best technology.” Already crying snake oil? Not so fast. By trashing the traditional set of mathematical rules (that’d be Boolean logic) and instead applying probabilistic logic, researchers have figured out how to deliver similar results with a fraction of the energy. The tech is being dubbed PCMOS (probabilistic CMOS), and could eventually end up in embedded systems and even cellphones. In the case of the latter, this type of chip will be able to display streaming video on a minuscule display with more artifacts than usual, but due to the small screen size and the human brain’s ability to piece together nearly-perfect images, the errors involved would be all but forgotten. Meanwhile, your battery bar would still be nearly full. We always heard there was beauty in imperfections — now, at long last, we finally get it.

New ASUS Eee PC: First Intel Atom 280-Powered Netbook

ASUS EeePC 1000he

The Eee PC 1000he, which ASUS announced today, is at least the company’s 10th netbook, yet the new model shows a couple of marked changes over previous Eee PCs and a number of minor tweaks as well.

The 1000he is the first netbook to use Intel’s new Atom N280 processor. The chip’s specs indicate slight improvements over the Atom N270 processor, which has become ubiquitous in netbooks. Another welcome addition to this model is a significant price drop.

AMD has no plans for Geode successor, retirement party

You know that low-power Geode processor that powered a-many of OLPC XOs? Better stock up now, ’cause AMD isn’t planning a proper successor. In the words of spokesman Phil Hughes: “There are no plans for a follow-on product to today’s available AMD Geode LX products, but we expect to make this very successful processor available to customers as long as the market demands.” Pretty straightforward if we should say so ourselves, but it’ll be kind of weird with just VIA and Intel holding down the low-power CPU fort. According to Dean McCarron, president for Mercury Research, the Geode was “a nice niche market for [AMD],” but considering the current market, the chip maker is being forced to focus its efforts on fewer devices. It’s been real, Geode — way to go out on top.

AMD’s Phenom II pushed to 6.5GHz, 3DMark record demolished

Ha, and you thought a 3DMark06 score of 5,086 was intense when AMD’s Phenom II was overclocked to a blistering 3.85GHz. Just after CES, a team of hardcore speed freaks with access to liquid nitrogen and liquid helium created an environment for OC’ing one of AMD’s latest Phenom II X4 chips in -232 degrees Celsius weather. Once the silicon was appropriately chilled, they proceeded to push the clock speed to a staggering 6.5GHz, which proved nimble enough to deliver a patently absurd 45,474 3DMark05 score. The best part? The adoring public was there to bear witness, and every nail-biting second of it is hosted up in the video just past the break.

AMD hacks another 1100 employees, cuts executive salaries by 20%

Barely two months ago we found that another round of layoffs would land 500 employees at AMD without a job. Now, we’re hearing that the chip maker is looking to scale down its workforce by another nine percent, which means that around 1,100 positions will be vacated in Q1 2009. Also of note, the arguably overpaid Executive Chairman Hector Ruiz and his buddy Chief Executive Dirk Meyer will each see “temporary” (what, like a day?) 20 percent cuts in base salary. Oh, and in case you needed a little more doom and gloom with your wine and cheese, the outfit is also suspending its 401(k) company match. Awesome.
