LG Ally to say ‘aloha’ to Verizon in mid-May?

Well, LG’s Moorestown-based, Moblin-running GW990 may sadly be no more, but it looks like the company will be bringing another fairly impressive-looking handset to US shores: the Android-based LG Ally. According to Android Central, it will be landing on Verizon around the middle of May and, if it looks a tad familiar, it’s because it’s apparently simply a US version of the phone we’ve known alternately as the LU2300 or Aloha (though it does seem to have undergone a few design tweaks). Details are otherwise light, but it’ll presumably pack the same 1GHz Snapdragon processor as the LU2300, along with a 3.5-inch AMOLED touchscreen, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera, and Android 2.1.

[Thanks, Erik]

Update: Android Central has tracked down an Iron Man 2-themed commercial on YouTube clearly suggesting the Ally is coming soon (if you recall, LG had a big tie-in with the original Iron Man, too). Viewers are encouraged to head over to lg.com/ally to check it out, but there’s nothing useful there — yet. Follow the break for the full commercial.

HTC ‘PC70110’ slider tested by FCC with love of AT&T’s 3G, probably Android

Why hello there, Mr. Blue Hue QWERTY slider from HTC. Looks like you’ve found yourself clamped to a complementary orange FCC testing unit, and the related paperwork tells us you’re down with AT&T’s 3G bands. The home, menu, back and search keys up top suggest you’ve Android coursing through the circuitry, but without some official word from your company or a proper name — “PC70110” just doesn’t suit you, really — we’re left only to gaze upon a handful of snapshots. Oh, you tease.

Nokia C2 render spins QWERTY right round

Render plus logo does not a new phone make, but that didn’t keep us from admiring the ridiculous form factor on this supposed Nokia C2. While the ‘C’ label puts the device squarely in dumbphone territory and the only specs available (320 x 240 display, 2 megapixel camera) don’t belabor that point, split-horizontal keyboards have a special place in our heart, and we eagerly await their return. That said, Nokia better get cracking if they want to beat the MOTOSPLIT — the way we see it, they’re one whole leaked, possibly fake render behind the competition.

BlackBerry 9670 flip spotted running OS 6.0, causes eyes to bleed, children to cry

According to BGR, we’re apparently looking at the first shots of a phone numbered 9670 in RIM’s BlackBerry parlance, a true QWERTY flip running BlackBerry OS 6.0 on a 480 x 360 display with WiFi, a 5 megapixel camera, optical pad (as is the case with every new BlackBerry these days), microSD expansion, and a huge external display that’s eerily reminiscent of Moto’s RAZR 2. The device is said to be running CDMA, which almost certainly means it’s being shopped around to Sprint and Verizon exclusively among major carriers — the only other big potential takers would be Bell and Telus, and they’re in the midst of migrating to HSPA — so we’ll just sit back, relax, and see if this thing materializes at WES next week. Granted, we’ve got to see it in person and gaze at a few non-blurrycam shots before passing final judgment, but we’re admittedly a little worried about the merciless beating the ugly stick may have delivered up in Waterloo this time around.

Nokia C3, C6, and E5 try to smarten up the dumbphone market

The countdown is over and the mystery is solved. Nokia just let us in on the secret of its “everyone connect” teaser: a trio of new middling handsets. Yes folks, hardware, but not the N-series flagship many of you were hoping for. Instead we’ve got a handful of affordable QWERTY cellphones bent on bringing messaging and social networking to the masses. Naturally, these devices aren’t going to compete for the attention of the N8-00 crowd — that’s fine, they’re not meant to. Today’s launch is part of Nokia’s global strategy to push the smartphone experience down into the dumbphone market.

Let’s start things off with the colorful C3-00 (available Q2 for €90 pre-tax and pre-subsidy) — Nokia’s first Series 40 QWERTY. The quad-band GSM candybar crams its social networking tools onto a 2.4-inch QVGA homescreen with Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi, and 55MB of internal memory (and up to 8GB supported on microSD) coming along for the ride. It’s also packing the Opera Mini browser in addition to the standard Webkit fare for browsing the mobile internet on the C3’s paltry EGPRS data connection. But hey, €90. Moving on, we’ve got the more ambitious C6-00 (Q2, €220) 4-row QWERTY slider with quad-band GSM/EDGE and quad-band HSDPA/UMTS on the 850/900/1900/2100 frequencies. The familiar looking C6 runs S60 5th on that 3.2-inch nHD (640 x 360 pixel) touchscreen (resistive, we presume) with a 5 megapixel autofocus camera and flash riding the backside. Of course, it also features integrated A-GPS for free Ovi Maps turn-by-turn navigation as is the case for all new Nokia GPS-enabled smartphones. Finally we’ve got the E5-00 (Q3, €180) for those in need of a S60 3rd device that’s a bit more business-minded than the C3 but twice the price (but still cheap). That means tri-band UMTS, A-GPS, WiFi and another unfortunate 2.4-inch LCD. Full press release after the break.

T-Mobile’s myTouch Slide earns its FCC wings?

Seeing HTC leak a shot of a product through a confidential FCC filing is about as rare as a confirmed yeti sighting, so you can imagine our excitement with this fresh meat that just landed in the Fed’s files today. What is it, exactly? Well, it’s a smartphone running 3G on WCDMA Band IV, which — for those who don’t have their bands memorized — is the AWS spectrum that T-Mobile uses. In other words, we’d bet our bottom dollar that this is the rumored Android-equipped myTouch Slide that we’re looking at here — and with a Spring launch window having been rumored in the past, this certification looks like it’s running right on time. Your move, T-Mobile.

LG LU2300 Android handset gets photos, ‘April or May’ release date?

Actual, honest-to-goodness photos of what is presumably the Korea-only LG LU2300 handset popped up on a site in the SK recently, and like a family pet that plays professional sports (guess who watched Air Bud last night?) it’s certainly captured the imagination of the Android-lovin’ world at large. The thing is said to sport a 3.5-inch (800 x 480) AMOLED capacitive touch screen, Android 2.1, landscape mode slide keyboard, support for DivX files, a 5 megapixel (720p video) camera with geo-tagging, WiFi, GPS, DMB tuner and — last but not least — a 1GHz Snapdragon processor. The stats are consistent with what we’ve heard before, and now we have a possible release date: April or May. What we don’t have, however, is any reason to believe rumors that this is going to be released in the states as the C710 Aloha. Although we might be skeptical, we understand the inherent wish-fulfillment: this is one sexy phone, and we’d certainly like to see it become available here. See another photo for yourself after the break.

Samsung Bada handsets of the future revealed in presentation slide

Just in case you had any doubts about Samsung’s commitment to the physical keyboard, here’s a slide of the Korean giant’s Bada OS roadmap, filled with rubbery QWERTY buttons aplenty. At top left you can see the Wave — which Samsung places in its “premium image brand” together with the Galaxy S — priced at 20,000 Rubles (just under $700), followed by its as yet nameless and spec-less Bada siblings. Our interest is piqued most by the QWERTY slider that’s sat so perfectly atop the 10,000-Ruble line, we wouldn’t mind seeing the Super AMOLED screen tech trickling down to such a price point. We wouldn’t mind that at all. All About Phones has also spotted two Windows Mobile and one Android handset during the presentation, though Sammy has been predictably recalcitrant about specs on those as well. All we’re told is to wait for the autumn. Guess that will have to do.

[Thanks, Muhammad]

TiVo Premiere unearths hidden power: USB keyboard functionality

One of our bigger gripes with the TiVo Premiere was the lack of an included QWERTY remote and how cumbersome it was to use search with the directional pad. Fortunately, while we wait for the official peripheral, it seems our old friend Dave Zatz has been snooping around the internet searching for alternatives — and best of all, he’s found ’em. Turns out even a wireless keyboard will do the trick, with the directional pad and alphanumeric keys working as expected and the function keys serving as shortcuts. Some other hidden functionality should pave the way for Android and iPhone apps to do the trick, but in the meantime, our run-of-the-mill USB keyboard worked just fine. Watch Zatz’s proof of concept with an off-the-shelf Arc Keyboard after the break.

Is LG going Droid hunting with its C710 Aloha Android smartphone?

Is LG going EVO hunting with its C710 Aloha Android smartphone?

Android phones are getting ever faster and, with each iteration, ever bigger. The Droid was large and in charge when it was announced, the Nexus One a little taller and a little speedier, and HTC’s EVO gives the slab moniker new credence. Now there’s talk that LG is getting in on the big and beautiful game, with an Android smartphone called the C710 Aloha. It’s said to sport an 800 x 480 screen like the EVO and N1, but unlike those two will have a full QWERTY keyboard. It’s also said to offer 802.11n WiFi along with GPRS, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity. Nothing is confirmed at this point, but a device called the C710 was given WiFi Alliance approval recently and, more convincing, a user agent profile file has been found, confirming the resolution and wireless capabilities. If true, the Aloha could provide to be a worthy alternative to the Droid for those who want a phone with a little more to love, and a keyboard to boot.
