Implantable blood sugar sensor could eliminate daily finger pricks

Science has been figuring out ways to sidestep those dreaded finger pricks for years now, but it’s not often that we hear of such a permanent solution as this. A crew of researchers from The University of Tokyo and BEANS Research Institute are in the process of developing a newfangled blood sugar sensor that “reacts to glucose and lights up inside the body.” ‘Course, injecting dyes into humans in order to receive interpretable signals ain’t exactly new, but hydrogel is what makes this approach unique. As the story goes, this jelly-esque material can be implanted within the body, enabling blood sugar levels to be monitored and measured externally with no pain or irritation whatsoever. In theory, a monitoring system could trigger an alert as soon as the internal levels dipped or rose beyond a predetermined extreme, giving those with diabetes a maximum amount of time to get things back in balance. There’s nary a mention of when this goo will be green-lit by the FDA, but there’s definitely a video explaining everything just past the break.

NPD: Android is now top-selling OS in American smartphones

Step aside, BlackBerrys and iPhones, the American consumer has voted with his wallet and picked Android as his favorite flavor in the quarter just gone. NPD’s number crunchers have just announced their findings for Q2 2010, concluding that 33 percent of phones sold during the period had Android on board. This marks the first time in eons (Q4 2007, to be more precise) that RIM has not held the crown of most purchased smartphone OS on US soil, with its BlackBerrys accounting for 28% of the market and Apple’s iPhone occupying third spot with 22%. Motorola and HTC are the key suspects fingered for Android’s continuing ascent, with the “large screen allure” of their handsets playing well with the buying public. Strained graphene leads to pseudo-magnetic fields, bends physics even further

Man, if only this had been discovered before Ariadne was tasked with building impossible dreams. A team of scientists caught high-fiving over at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory have a new and riveting announcement to share, and it revolves around our old and trusted friend, graphene. This go ’round, the self-proclaimed “extraordinary form of carbon” is being stressed to its max, but not without good reason. Thanks to inquisitive minds and a “stroke of serendipity,” a research team was able to create magnetic fields in excess of 300 tesla by simply straining graphene in a certain way. For physicists, the discovery is a dream come true, particularly when you realize that magnetic fields in excess of 85 tesla were practically impossible to come across in a laboratory setting. The benefits here? It’s honestly too early to tell, but gurus in the field are already suggesting that the “opportunities for basic science with strain engineering [are] huge.” Something tells us Magneto would concur.

Melting silicon ‘in reverse’ can help purify it, result in cheaper electronics

Just our favorite combination of news: a mind-bending innovation that can have a very practical impact on our daily tech consumption. MIT scientists have found that silicon — when combined in the right dosage with other metals — can actually be made to melt by reducing its temperature. Typically, you’d require 1,414 degrees of Celsius heat to liquidize solid silicon, but the intermixed variant discussed here need only reach 900 degrees before its slow cooling process starts turning it gooey. The great advantage to this discovery is that because the impurities tend to separate off into the liquid part, there’s now a practicable way to filter them out, meaning that things like solar cells won’t require the same high grade of silicon purity for their construction — which in turn might lead to us being able to afford them one day. Of course, that’s getting way too far ahead of ourselves, as the research is still ongoing, but good news is good news no matter the timescale.

ATI overtakes NVIDIA in discrete GPU shipments

You’d think with ATI having the performance, value and power efficiency lead for so long — at least since the Radeon HD 4000 series — NVIDIA would be in all kinds of trouble, but it’s only now that AMD’s graphics division has finally taken the lead in quarterly shipments. This is according to Mercury Research, whose analysts place the split at 51 to 49 percent in favor of ATI — still a tightly contested thing, but it compares very favorably to the Red Team’s 41% share in the same quarter last year. This data is concerned with discrete GPU shipments only (laptops included), whereas on the integrated front Intel continues to reign supreme with 54 percent of the market shipping its cheap and cheerful IGP units. ATI has made forward strides there as well, however, with 24.5% ranking ahead of NVIDIA’s 19.8%. If Apple shifting its iMac and Mac Pro lines away from the Green livery wasn’t enough, perhaps these numbers will finally start ringing some alarm bells over at NV HQ.

Adorable Walking Robot Sets Distance Record


A four-legged robot nicknamed “Ranger” has set a distance record, walking 14.3 miles before it ran out of juice.

That amounts to 108.5 laps around the 1/8-mile indoor track at Cornell University’s Barton Hall — or 65,185 steps of Ranger’s spindly metal legs.

The robot’s journey took it 10 hours, 40 minutes and 48 seconds, using about a penny’s worth of electricity for each 3 miles it traversed. Although several humans accompanied it for parts of its stroll, Ranger was never touched by human hands during the journey.

Earlier versions of Ranger walked just 1 kilometer in 2006 and 9.07 kilometers (5.6 miles) in 2008.

Ranger’s steps are coordinated by 6 on-board microprocessors, but the robot’s steering is done by remote control. The “eyes” and “ears” on the robot are not sensors, but foam padding, designed to protect the robot in case of falls.

The research team that built Ranger was aiming for distance, not speed. By comparison, Boston Dynamics’ BigDog, an eerie quadrupedal robot built for carrying 300-pound loads, set the previous robot walking distance record of 12.8 miles. But BigDog is loud and frightening, while Ranger is quiet and kids love him (at least, one kid appears to).

Invisibility cloak upgraded to bend infrared light, not to mention our minds

The fabled cloak of invisibility was once considered impossible for modern science, chilling out with perpetual motion up in the clouds, but these days scientists are tilting at blurry windmills with a modicum of success several times a year. The latest advance in theory comes to us from Michigan Tech, which says it can now cloak objects in the infrared spectrum. Previous attempts using metallic metamaterials could only bend microwave radiation, the study claims, but using tiny resonators made of chalcogenide glass arranged in spokes around the object (see diagram at left) researcher Elena Semouchkina and colleagues successfully hid a simulated metal cylinder from 3.5 terahertz waves. While it’s hard to say when we might see similar solutions for visible light, even a practical application of infrared cloaking could put your night vision goggles to shame, or perhaps block covert objects from being detected by those newfangled terahertz x-rays.

Rat lungs successfully grown in bioreactor: groundbreaking, yet also kind of gross

Bioartifical organs differ from, well, plain ol’ artificial organs because they consist of biomaterials and cells. And while bioartificial livers are becoming increasingly commonplace, it’s only recently that working lungs have been grown in a lab. Working at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, researchers removed the left lungs from rats and stripped them of cells with a process that left the blood vessels, airways, and connective tissues intact. Using all that as a sort of scaffolding, lung cells were regrown on the scaffolding in a bioreactor. The cultivation of the lungs took less than a week, and once they’d been run through their paces in culture, they were transplanted into rats. At this point, the lungs did their job for about six hours, after which “they failed through accumulation of fluid inside the lung and resultant capillary leakage,” according to PhysOrg. According to the man in charge, Mass General’s Harald C. Ott, if work continues at the current pace we might begin to see regenerated organs for human patients within the next ten years. HP developing materials for reflective color e-paper displays

Who knew HP was such a big player in the display business? Just days after announcing that a flexible display from Mars may very well hit the market out of Hewlett-Packard’s own laboratories, a fresh report has surfaced over at Technology Review surrounding yet another display tech that the company is feverishly working on. It’s bruited that the outfit is “developing new materials for brighter low-power displays” — think E Ink, but with color… and a twist. Frustrated with what nature was offering (or not offering, as it were), scientists at HP decided to concoct new materials that “use ambient light to create a more vibrant color for video-capable, low-power screens.” It’s hard to say just yet whether or not this stuff will end up suitable for mass production; we’ve been hearing about color e-paper for years now, and even though Qualcomm’s Mirasol display showed great promise at CES, we’ve yet to hear of any progress towards a market-ready product. Hit the source if you’re thirsty for technobabble, but don’t go looking down on that Kindle just yet.

Apple and HTC lead charge as smartphone market looks set to grow and grow

A recent survey of 4,028 US consumers by ChangeWave has thrown up a number of illuminating statistics, which you might consider as predictable as they are informative. The chief takeaway is that people are keen on buying smartphones like never before, with 16% of respondents saying that they’ll be taking the plunge within the next 90 days, which marks the biggest increase in the survey’s history. Secondly, and crucially for vendor loyalists, Apple and HTC seem to be the biggest beneficiaries (or are they the stimulants?) of this interest, with both improving their share by over 50 percent between March and June of this year. RIM and Motorola have taken a tumble in that same timespan, while Palm has sadly failed to register even a single percentage point. We can definitely see the Droid X and BlackBerry 6 remedying things for the big boys, but Palm’s route out of ignominy seems a little less straightforward.
