Ask Engadget: Best BlackBerry handset right now?

Make no mistake, the hottest thing going in the mobile realm just now is the Palm Pre, but that’s not to say RIM hasn’t gained a lot of attention with its most recent outpouring of smartphones. Max has chimed in with this week’s Ask Engadget question (which was sent in via ask at engadget dawt com), and it’s all about the latest and greatest BlackBerrys.

“I’m considering purchasing the BlackBerry Bold, but the news about the Storm and even the Curve has me intrigued. Which would your readers recommend for a new BlackBerry owner, and why? Pros and cons for each would be excellent.”

We don’t need to reiterate just how high the pedestal is on which the Curve 8900 sits (yes, even today) in the minds of the BB faithful, so we’ve no doubt that it should be included in this conversation. Go on fanboys, defend your dialer below.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXVII: the BlueBerry is exactly what you think

We’d heard the BlueBerry was a no-name nav unit, but the exciting world of knock-offs moves faster than a speeding bullet — and these days, it’s taking the form of a Bold. Just $164.99 buys you a phone with a QVGA display, microSD slot, and twice as many SIM slots as the real thing — oh, and about as much Exchange support as your uncle’s avocado green AT&T Slimline. We’ll take two.

Spotted: Curve 8900 running on AT&T

So Boy Genius Report reported on a shot of what seems to be a Curve 8900 running on AT&T — which seems like a pretty good idea, may we add — and we’re trying to make sense of what’s really going on. We hit up RIM’s booth at CES to get the lowdown on the situation, and what do you know, the mythical beast is nowhere to be found. The reps on the floor said that it’s only for T-Mobile and when we checked every 8900 on the show floor, we couldn’t find one running on any other carrier. ‘Course, we’d be shocked if RIM wasn’t chronically refreshing BGR every fifteen seconds, so it’s entirely possible that they saw the news, realized their grave error, and pulled the offending phone posthaste. Either way, it’s a great idea, is it not?

BlackBerry Curve 8900 caught on the lam in some T-Mobile store

The good news: odds are decent your local T-Mobile store has a Curve 8900 locked away somewhere. The bad news: you can’t have it. Word on the street is that T-Mob staff are under strict orders to keep the 8900 out of shopping bags until February 11, the last rumored launch date we’d heard, so keep saving your pennies… to, you know, bribe a store this week.

T-Mobile’s BlackBerry Curve 8900 seemingly pegged for February 11

Product delays are the greasy, disgusting lubricant that keep the wheels of the consumer electronics world turning, so when we hear of something being pushed back a week, a month, or a quarter, we really don’t think much of it. Moving a launch up, though — well, that’s a totally different ball game, and it always brings a smile to our faces. Word on the street had been that T-Mobile USA would take delivery of the luscious new Curve 8900 come February 18, but now we’re hearing it’s actually coming a week earlier on February 11, just in time to stuff RIM’s latest hardware in your loved one’s box of chocolates, bouquet, or gift basket of sundry sausages, cheeses, and jams. ‘Course, WiFi and 3.2-megapixel cam might be enough to get you to dump your life partner flat on his / her / its ass, so don’t blame us if this thing wrecks your otherwise happy home.

RIM’s president calls BlackBerry Storm a small netbook

Clearly, Mike Lazaridis has the chops when it comes to running a business. What he clearly lacks, however, is a firm definition of the term “netbook.” To his credit, we still feel the exact boundaries for netbooks have yet to be determined (fret not, Psion Teklogix is hammering out those details), but calling a BlackBerry Storm one is — how do you say? — a bit of a stretch. During a recent sit down with RIM’s president, CNET Asia heard the bigwig answer like so when questioned about viewing netbooks as competitors: “No, I think I can put netbooks in here [referring to the BlackBerry Storm]. These are netbooks. They are just smaller.” Wait, Mike — don’t you think smartphones are more like MIDs or UMPCs? Or do we just have you all wrong here?

How To Update Your BlackBerry

berry%20pic%202.jpg

In February of 2008, RIM announced that a big update was coming out for its BlackBerry handsets: OS v4.5. You can read all about the new features here and here. It ended up taking about 8 months before the update actually became available, but it’s finally arrived… well, for some BlackBerries, on some wireless carriers. Rather than go nuts trying to figure out if yours is one of them, RIM has a Web site that will easily check your ‘Berry and update it if applicable. Here’s what you do:

1. Hop on a Windows computer running Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher.

2. Plug in your BlackBerry via USB cable.

3. Use Internet Explorer to navigate to http://na.blackberry.com/eng/update/.

4.Click “Check for Updates.”

Hold the Phone, iPhone

As you may have heard, the Google Open Handset Alliance just got bigger, gaining 14 new members. We’re not talking little guys, either. Vodaphone, Garmin International, Sony Ericsson, ARM and others are joining the revolution quiet movement to upend the iPhone from its current position at number one. At the very least, the alliance has the growing potential to open up the touchscreen market and offer a viable alternative to Apple’s sole mobile offering, which is arguably the best phone on the market. (Now if they would just open it up to other carriers…)

At the moment, it appears that Google Android mobile operating system holds the second-place position, a statistic based solely on what I’ve been scanning in the news, though the actual numbers may dictate otherwise. Research in Motion (RIM) touted the new Blackberry Storm as if it were the iPhone’s messiah, but RIM fell flat on its face, making life miserable for thousands of Verizon employees who had to handle the complaints. I commend RIM on trying, but really, you can’t take on the iPhone with a slick marketing campaign. You need a near-flawless product to even come close.

But enough speculation, let’s get down to the nuts and bolts of what this blog is about. I’m talking photos and thanks to Live Crunch, I’ve got some great pics from an Android-powered, HTC G1 for your viewing pleasure. From what I see, the 3.2 mega-pixel camera can take a good photo in the right conditions. I’ve posted three photos from the G1 below that I think are a great representation of the camera quality. And with the G2 coming next year, who knows, maybe they will get even better.
