Purported HTC Spark Windows Phone 7 ROM leak suggests Vodafone home, Trophy doppelganger

It’s been decades, in internet years, since we caught wind of a 4.3-inch, 1.3GHz HTC Mondrian via a leaked Windows Phone 7 ROM. The sun rises, the sun sets, life returned to normal, and yet… here we are again. This ROM comes care of a purported Vodafone leak and sports the name (so much as the filename hints) HTC Spark, a render of which bears striking resemblance to the Trophy we espied last week. Spark itself popped up as recent as early August on a sheet that claimed a 3.7-inch 480 x 800 display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512MB RAM, and a 5 megapixel camera. Can all these loose threads tie together to form one cohesive smartphone sweater? Not yet, but it’s getting there.

HTC Desire HD ROM ported to Droid Incredible, Desire (update: EVO 4G too)

You’ve already seen it ported to the HTC HD2, and it looks like the recently-leaked HTC Desire HD ROM has now also made its way to two more likely candidates for a port: the Droid Incredible and original Desire. As you might expect, there are a few issues that you’ll likely want to consider before diving right in — there’s no camera support yet on either phone, for instance — but it does look like it otherwise reasonably stable for a beta, and it does bring some of the boot speed improvements seen on the Desire HD itself. Head on past the break for a quick video, and hit up the source links below for all the necessary details.

Update: We’re getting word that even the HTC EVO 4G’s in on the speedy-booting game now, with a Desire HD ROM as well as an original Desire build from MIUI. They’re apparently still half-baked like the other two, missing camera support, WiFi and 4G as well, but if you’ve been looking for an opportunity to tweak, hit up link number three below.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

HTC Desire HD ROM spawns screenshots aplenty

We’ve already gotten a brief look at the recently-leaked HTC Desire HD ROM — and the device itself, of course — but those still looking for more may want to pay a visit to Android Spin, which has dissected the ROM and provided a fairly thorough look at what’s in store for the next version of Sense. That includes some greater customization options, a new HTC Likes app that provides app recommendations, a brand new HTC eReader application and, of course, a number of new features tied to HTC’s new HTCSense.com service. Hit up the source link below for the complete tour.

HTC Lexikon shows up in leaked ROM update: is it the Merge for Verizon?

You might remember some discussion of the Lexikon about this time last month, a rumored Android piece from HTC sporting an 800MHz MSM7630 core, a 5 megapixel camera, 3.8-inch WVGA display, 4GB of onboard storage, Froyo with Sense, and a QWERTY keyboard. Sounds a little bit like the G2 / Desire Z, doesn’t it? Indeed, those other models use Qualcomm’s MSM7230 processor, the GSM version of the 7630 that’d be required for action on Verizon. Well, fast forward to a new ROM update leak, showing a rendered device with Verizon branding up top and a face that looks suspiciously similar to that dual-mode GSM / CDMA slider we’ve been tracking for a couple months (pay particular attention to the creases below the touch buttons). Separately, one of our time-tested tipsters has let us know that the Lexikon is the same phone as the so-called Merge; we hope you haven’t grown attached to the flaming red keyboard, because more recent hardware revisions don’t have it. Hey, maybe you’ll be able to accessorize like you can with the Droid Incredible, eh?

[Thanks, HTC Kid and patlex]

HTC Desire HD ROM gets dumped, ported, chopped, and screwed… oh, and benchmarked

Lots of activity involving the just-announced HTC Desire HD in the past couple days, despite the fact that it’s yet to be released anywhere — and frankly, that’s just the kind of can-do attitude from the dev community that we like to see. First off, the HD2 — which, considering the screen size and general spec sheet similarity, makes an obvious candidate for a ROM transplant — has indeed gotten an early port, and something tells us this hack is going to get a lot of spit and polish over the next few weeks and will end up breathing fresh life into a phone that had been crippled by its dead-man-walking operating system. There’d been a video of the port in action, but sadly, it’s been pulled off YouTube for some mysterious reason, so hopefully it’ll reemerge (along with instructions for HD2 owners) soon.

Meanwhile, the Desire HD is apparently putting up some hardcore benchmark scores on the strength of its updated Snapdragon MSM8255 processor, posting a Quadrant score of nearly 2,000 — about two-thirds better than a Froyo-equipped Nexus One. The dumped ROM is already online, so feel free to start digging through it… and if you somehow have a prototype Desire HD lying around, all the better.

[Thanks, garsim]

Custom Droid X ROMs starting to break loose, eFuse be damned

Despite Motorola’s best intentions to the contrary, the Droid X has been making steady progress toward viable custom ROMs, first with root access, then with a recovery method… and now, at long last, we’re starting to get the first few glimpses at legit cooked firmware. The two options we’re seeing so far are Sapphire — originally designed for the Droid of old — and a so-called “FlyX” ROM from longtime contributor Birdman. In both cases, the benefits of eschewing Motorola’s standard builds are pretty obvious: you get Froyo, root, and a host of apps and capabilities preferred by the superuser crowd like surcharge-free mobile hotspot access. The process is a little involved to get these bad boys installed at this point, but with time, we’re willing to bet it becomes a pretty painless endeavor. Follow the break for a quick video of Sapphire booting into stock Froyo on the X — a tantalizing sight, indeed.

[Thanks, Clift]

T-Mobile G2 build flashes to other devices to great results, new widgets

Remember that T-Mobile G2 build that leaked out earlier this week? Even if you didn’t, the ROM still managed to find its way onto other Android devices by way of some clever (if not elementary, dear Watson) hacking, and from that very binary comes some vivid imagery. Nothing too surprising or earth-shattering, unless of course you find a Google Voice widget absolutely mind-blowing. And if you do, well, you’re welcome.

The revolving door: Froyo for Droid Incredible coming tomorrow, Froyo for EVO 4G gets rooted

The rich landscape of Android versioning just got a bit richer, with word of an official Froyo update for the Droid Incredible being launched tomorrow (based on the screencap pictured above), while the EVO 4G’s recent Froyo software just got rooted. If you’re crazily impatient, an Android 2.2 ROM for the Incredible just leaked out into the wild, and can be installed with a bit of work, but from the official-looking-ness of this leak from Droid Life, a painless official update is not far off. Meanwhile, in Sprint land, the xda-devs have a rather complicated, rather scary method posted for rooting 2.2 on the EVO 4G — you’ll have to ask yourself how much that freedom is worth to you, or just wait for the inevitably easier methods to come along and hold your hand.

Koush’s Droid X Recovery paves the way for ROMs to come

Koush's Droid X Recovery paves the way for ROMs to come

The Droid X got rooted just about a month ago, but still users are unable to run their own custom ROMs — something seen as a basic right amongst the Android community. Now those chaps are a good bit closer to getting there thanks to a new recovery mechanism posted by Koush. What’s taking so long? The security mechanisms on the Droid X are said to be “a real bitch” and, to circumvent them, Koush had to hijack a logging process that runs at boot-up. This process runs in place of that, allowing a user to restore their phone to a previous backup generated before trying to do something wild and crazy. What does this mean? ROM runners now have a means of safely retreating if they find themselves cornered (or bricked), allowing them to try more daring assaults more often, and meaning we could be only days away from Droid X users being allowed to fully express themselves.

New Xbox 360 hacked to play ‘backup’ discs, public release underway? (video)

If you’re looking for video proof of the latest and greatest Xbox 360 firmware mod, you won’t find it in the video after the break, but we’re almost willing to take it on Team Xecuter’s word and long-standing reputation that they’ve hacked the new Xbox 360. Banding together with Team Jungle and commodore4eva — the hacker who brought backups to the original console in 2006 — the group says they’ve successfully patched the DVD drive to play burned discs. Better still, they’re promising that a public release of said patch “will be available shortly” to help you unlock a Stealthbox by your lonesome. Just remember, kids, circumventing DRM isn’t always legal, even if you’re copying games that you bought right off the shelf.

[Thanks, Tito]
