Wii HD rearing long-rumored head at E3 2011?

Another year, another chance for Nintendo to deliver what it’s alternately denied and teased since day one — a successor to the Nintendo Wii capable of displaying games in high resolution. Will Nintendo finally make it happen? Multiple totally anonymous sources say yes: they told Game Informer, IGN and Kotaku that just such a system will debut at E3 2011 in June, possibly with a teaser of some sort next month. While the ninja moles didn’t provide many hard details — mostly just the typical iffy claim that the system will wipe the floor with competitors in terms of speeds and feeds — they told IGN that it will support 1080p resolutions and be backwards-compatible with games for the Wii. Naturally, we’ll believe it when we see it… so here’s hoping we see it fairly quickly.

Nokia W7 and W8 tipped as first Windows Phone models

If you can accept what we’re about to tell you as rumor, and nothing more, then we’d like to let you in on the latest scuttlebutt surrounding Nokia’s first dip into the shallow Windows Phone waters. Eldar Murtazin, the eternal Nokia antagonist, claims to have the inside scoop on Nokia’s current Windows Phone device plans while getting an early hands-on with a prototype. Besides demonstrating a natural extension of the Nokia naming strategy to accommodate the new Windows Phone devices, Eldar tells us that model W7 is built around an X7 hardware base while the new W8 handset is a variant of Nokia’s N8 cameraphone (conceptualized in the above pic). According to Eldar, all of Nokia’s WP prototypes are built upon Qualcomm chipsets per Microsoft’s requirement (and Nokia’s dismay). The W7 model is currently being used in-house for development purposes and will likely be the first to market, according to Eldar, with an 8 megapixel autofocus camera and flash. Murtazin claims that the W7 reminded him of the HTC Mozart without any noticeable customizations to the OS. If neither of these models appeal to you, hold tight — Eldar says that Nokia has a dozen Windows Phone devices planed for 2012. Of course, it’s early days so any, or all of this might change before Nokia ships its first device later this year or early twenty-twelve. Imagine it: Nokia hardware slathered in Mango — mmm mmm good.

Report: Is Apple Working on an HDTV?

New Apple TV

Rumors that Apple was planning to get into the HDTV business started initially back before the current Apple TV model was released. After the Apple TV hit store shelves, people resigned themselves to the likelihood that Apple had no plans to release a consumer HDTV, and moved on.
Now, a new report by an analyst with Ticonderoga Securities says that it’s more than possible that Apple will launch an Internet-connected LCD HDTV before the end of 2011, retailing for close to $2,000.
The report cites several “data points” that Brian White, the analyst who authored the report, picked up at a trade show in China this week, and says in essence that Apple isn’t happy with the Apple TV being its only major living room business play.
Combined with Apple’s iTunes video sales and rentals and its devotion to Airplay – its technology for wirelessly streaming audio and video from iOS and Mac OS devices to one another and supported home theater equipment – White believes that Apple is well positioned to make a push into the HDTV market.

Rumor: Nintendo Wii Getting a Price Cut to $150

Red Nintendo Wii

According to a “trusted source” at Engadget, the Nintendo Wii has been around long enough to earn itself a break at the checkout counter.
If you haven’t picked one up yet, or if you bought one, got bored with it, sold it, and are now interested in getting another one because you’re really looking forward to Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, it’s possible that one may be in your future for $150 retail instead of the current $199.
Nintendo hasn’t weighed in on the matter yet, but some are expecting the cut to come as soon as mid-May, while others point out that the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June would be a more appropriate place for Nintendo to make such an announcement.
Regardless, nothing has been confirmed yet, but if it’s true it could mean a bright summer for Nintendo, not to mention lower prices across the board if other manufacturers choose to respond in kind.

Motorola to begin beta testing rugged Android tablet, steps up enterprise efforts

We’ve been keeping our eyes on Motorola’s plans to sink its claws into the enterprise market for at least the past couple of months, and it looks like the company is ramping up its efforts with a rugged Android tablet fit for the workplace. A presentation provided to us by a helpful tipster outlines Moto’s plans to be the “first physical embodiment defining Android for the Enterprise,” with a Gingerbread-equipped tablet entering beta testing this October. As you can see from the slide above, the slate will sport both a 1.3MP front-facing camera and an 8MP rear-facing camera “with illumination and aiming” for barcode scanning. It’s also carrying a dual-core 1GHz OMAP 4 CPU, 1GB RAM, 8GB NAND, a 7-inch LCD display, Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR, 802.11 a/b/g/n WiFi, and USB connectivity. It should also pack enough juice to supply five and a half hours of streaming video, and should be able to withstand a four foot drop, extreme temperatures, excessive dust, and splashing water. From the look of things, this tablet’s going to be more at home in the workshop than the boardroom, but we’ll just have to wait and see what becomes of it once the thing makes it out of beta.

Nintendo cutting Wii price to $150 on May 15th?

Nintendo’s miniature white monolith has sold like gangbusters for long enough that we’re wary it’ll ever get cheap, but a trusted source tells us a price cut is indeed headed our way — and that the Nintendo Wii will cost just $150 starting May 15th. The timing would make some sense, given how Nintendo’s profits have tanked for a while due to flagging hardware sales, and just last month Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime hinted that the Wii’s price might be a potential variable to change that in an interview with Gamasutra. Still, we’re not fully convinced that Nintendo would announce a price cut then, rather than, say, at the Electronics Entertainment Expo in June, and it’s not like the company to let this sort of announcement leak out. Still, if you find a shiny new copy of Mario Kart Wii in a $150 console bundle this time next month, don’t say we didn’t warn you.

Intel teases 32nm Cloverview tablet processor, 22nm Ivy Bridge CPU

It hasn’t even been a week since Intel rolled out Oak Trail, and it’s already teasing us with yet another tablet-ready chip called Cloverview. What’s more, we’re also seeing unofficial details emerging for its next generation Ivy Bridge CPU. Starting from the top: PC World is reporting that Intel’s Doug Davis introduced the Atom-based Cloverview at the firm’s Developer Forum in Beijing Tuesday, touting its 32nm architecture and low power consumption. Meanwhile a set of rather convincing slides are showing off the 22nm stylings of Sandy Bridge’s successor, Ivy Bridge. From the look of things, the CPU will support DirectX 11 graphics, USB 3.0, and 1600MHz DDR3 memory — its desktop platform has been christened Maho Bay. Ivy Bridge is reportedly expected to arrive in the first half of 2012, but we’re still waiting on Cloverview’s ETA. Isn’t silicon fun?

Fujitsu and DoCoMo’s new dual-boot handset: Windows 7 and Symbian together at last?

Ever wished you could have a Microsoft main course with a side of Symbian? We haven’t either, but if the rumors are true, Fujitsu and DoCoMo are teaming up to unleash a dual-boot device this year that can go from Windows 7 (the desktop OS, not WP7) to Symbian at the flip of a switch. According to the always untrusworthy interwebs, the LOOX F-07C will come with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a four-inch 1024 x 600 display, an Intel Atom CPU, and a 32GB SSD. We don’t know if this latest handset with multiple personality disorder is real or not, but we do know its odd couple OS pairing has piqued our somewhat morbid curiosity.

Apple hires carbon fiber expert to posit composites

If you’re going to compete in the consumer electronics business then you’d better have a solid grasp of industrial design and materials science. Otherwise, you’re just another manufacturer trying to eke profit from drab slabs of commodity plastic. With the exception of the MacBook, Apple’s entire Mac lineup is currently cut from aluminum. However, Apple’s been caught experimenting with its newly acquired Liquidmetal materials recently, even as rumors swirl around new ultra-lightweight and durable carbon fiber components and enclosures. Speculation about the latter has been fueled by an Apple patent application for a process that would use carbon fiber materials woven into the reinforced device housings of mobile telephones, laptops, desktops, and tablets. Interestingly enough, the patent app was filed by Kevin M. Kenney (developer of the first all carbon fiber bicycle frame) on behalf of Apple back in 2009, a man who changed his job title to “Senior Composites Engineer at Apple Inc.” on LinkedIn at some point after March 1st (according to Google cache). Of course, a carbon fiber laptop is far from unique — just reference the Sony G11 from 2007 or 2008’s Voodoo Envy 133 if you want to see how it’s done. But if Apple makes a wholesale shift to carbon fiber in the months ahead then you can expect the horde of me-too OEMs to follow suit a year later. See the before and after LinkedIn profiles for Kenney after the break.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 struts its stuff in leaked press shots? (Updated)

If you had any doubts about HTC’s Incredible S making it to our shores, they’re probably dissipating as we speak — not only has the phone obtained Verizon’s shiny red checkmark, it’s now got the robotic eye of Sauron staring at us with ferocious intensity. PocketNow obtained these pictures of the likely Droid Incredible 2 without naming so much as an anonymous source, and we wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Verizon’s way of reminding us that the handset is rapidly on its way to market. You’ll find two more pictures at our source link.

Update: Android Central got hold of some new shots of the actual phone itself, which shows off its model number ADR6350 and firmware 2.2.1. Thanks, Bla1ze.
