T-Mobile’s 2009 3G rollout schedule leaked?

It hasn’t been verified, but optimistic T-Mobile customers aching to get a little broadband on the beach might want to schedule their trips to Honolulu around Q4 — at least if you’re willing to believe this 3G rollout schedule that’s apparently being sent out this morning. Other notable cities on the list include Milwaukee, Tucson, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Nashville and Salt Lake City, as well as a wide swath of Texas. We’re poking around for confirmation — at the very least, this list doesn’t contradict anything T-Mo’s said in the past, but we’ll let you know.

2TB Time Capsule in the works?

Apple just updated the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule last month, so we don’t know if the timing is right for a storage bump, but tipster Brandon just noticed that the ClubMac’s promo pic of the TC box features an unmistakable 2TB badge. Makes sense to us — 500GB is laughably small for a device designed to back up multiple machines, and standard-height 2TB drives are now available from Western Digital and soon from Seagate. We’ll keep an eye out — anyone else hear anything?

[Thanks, Brandon]

Apple Listing Suggests iPod Touch Will Sport a Camera

Camera_joblistings_2

A listing on Apple’s job board implies that future iPod Touch models will include a built-in web cam like the iPhone’s.

The blogger hawks at Apple iPhone Apps spotted a job listing for a camera project manager. The listing stated the following:

The iPhone Engineering Group is looking for a Camera Engineering Project Manager (EPM) to drive the design, development and integration of camera modules across iPhone and iPod. The EPM is the interface between our internal engineering teams and the suppliers of sensors, lenses and camera modules.

Most interesting to note is that presumably, Apple has since updated the job listing to remove the "iPod" reference, so now the sentence only mentions the iPhone.

That certainly raises a brow. What do you think? A quick attempt to patch up an accidental leak? Or an authentic correction to the job description? We’re going to bet the former: "Across iPhone" sounds clunky and ungrammatical, and we doubt putting a camera in the iPod Touch would cannibalize iPhone sales.

In any case, the listing was first posted March 16, so if Apple is planning to install a web cam on the future iPod Touch, it’s unlikely we’ll see it in the next upgrade to the device.

Next-Gen iPod Touch to Gain “N” Wireless Radio

08touch_hero

The next iterations of the iPhone and iPod Touch are likely to have 802.11n wireless radios inside, offering lower power consumption, longer range and faster data rates. More importantly, it will mean that you can hook your handheld up to your n-enabled home network and not slow everything else down.

This news comes from detailed, painstaking and probably tiring study of the 3.0 iPhone firmware, revealing an iPod Touch resource file which shows a change from the current Broadcom BCM4325 wireless chip to the newer BCM4329. This chip also supports Bluetooth and FM radio, although expect this last to be disabled on Apple hardware.

Of course, if the Touch gets 802.11n, the iPhone will almost certainly get it too. This move would put all current Apple hardware on the n specification, a curious fact given the very recent upgrade to the Airport base-stations allowing simultaneous b/g and n networking.

Spy-Shots May Reveal Flip-Screen Nikon DSLR

D500

Hint: If you’re going to post pictures of a new, unannounced Nikon DSLR, don’t pick the worst one:

"I have more and better pictures if people are interested."

So ends the post from indyjb on the Something Awful “humor" forums, which you see above. We remain very skeptical of this snap, mostly due to the source and the fact that he didn’t bother putting up the “better" photographs. If real, we are seeing a Nikon SLR with a flip-out screen, something that doesn’t yet exist. It would certainly fit with Nikon’s innovative strategy to push new features other than plain magapixels counts.

The camera is thought to be a "D500", although it could be a replacement for the entry-level D40/D60 double-team. When would it appear? There is a Nikon event in Austria on Tuesday April 14th, a press breakfast featuring “exclusive new product highlights".

To add to the speculation, it is entirely likely that there will be a D60 replacement and a D300 replacement soon, and that the cheaper camera will shoot video just like the D90. We’ll have to wait and see. One thing we do know is that it will be something worth writing about — for the last year or so, almost every Nikon DSLR announcement has been exciting.

Archos 2 and Archos 4 flash players leak out

We haven’t heard anything official, but images of an Archos 2 flash player have turned up in a few places on the web today, along with word of an Archos 4. The 2’s already listed on Amazon — it’s not going to rock worlds, but it’s not bad for $60, with 8GB of storage and microSD expansion, a 1.8-inch 128 x 160 display and a voice recorder all in a .35-inch thick package. There’s also a 16GB version on Amazon.de for €68 ($92), but that hasn’t yet made it to the US Amazon site. The Archos 4 is a little more mysterious — all we really know about it is that it’ll have a four-inch screen and 16 to 32GB of flash. We’re guessing these’ll pop soon, we’ll let you know.

[Thanks, Bill]

Dell netbook roadmap leaks out, get ready for the Mini 11

Oops, it looks like a Dell middle manager somewhere got a little too excited and let a full set of netbook roadmap slides leak out. The biggest news is a planned Mini 11 due sometime between now and the end of Q3, but the Mini 10 is where most of the action is in the short term — the current model will get options for Vista, a 3G modem, and potentially a 1.86GHz Atom on April 17th, a new 1.6GHz Atom N270 SKU will arrive in May and everything will be updated again in the second half of the year with Intel’s Pine Trail processors. Interesting, but we’re wondering when Dell will realize that the Mini 10’s HDMI output and 720p screen are useless unless it can handle true HD video — Ion, anyone?

Verizon enV3 spotted by Mssr. Blurrycam

Doesn’t look like LG and Verizon are taking any radical steps with the next generation of the popular enV line — these snaps of the enV3 just leaked out, and at first glance it looks basically the same as the enV2. There are some differences, though: the numeric keypad is a bit more stylish, the QWERTY layout’s been tweaked, and the camera’s been bumped up to 3 megapixels. That’s all we can spot here — we’ll see if there are any other deep surprises if and when this puppy’s announced. One more pic after the break.

Microsoft job ads hints at Zune services in the living room

Well, what’s this? A recent Zune job posting says the boys down Redmond-town are looking for someone to come up with “innovative user interfaces for delivering a rich, deep interactive media consumption experience in a living room environment.” That sounds to us like integration of the Zune software team into the ConnectedTV division is starting to kick into gear — the listing also specifically mentions on-demand audio and video content, which seem like a natural direction for ZunePass. We’re not sure how any of this is going to pan out, but at least Microsoft is making moves to keep the struggling Zune platform alive — whether or not that involves actual Zune hardware in the future is still up for debate.

Huawei’s enigmatic Android phone bound for T-Mobile in Q3?

Take this with some skepticism, but according to tmonews.com a “trusted source” has revealed an Android-based Huawei phone is currently being tested and heading to T-Mobile in Q3, a timeframe we heard about at MWC. Specs reportedly include a 5 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, WiFi, and Cupcake, naturally. No word on UMA, but the site claims that a certain Mr. Blurrycam is dropping off photos and more dtails in next few weeks, so we’ll keep our eyes on that.
