HP to Offer Three Versions of Windows 7 for Netbooks

Leave it to Microsoft to make netbooks complicated.

It appears likely the tech giant will offer three different versions of Windows 7 for netbooks. HP officials told Computer World about its plans to offer three different configurations of Windows 7 for netbooks, which suggests Microsoft will roll out this structure for other companies’ netbooks as well.

According to HP, the following three Windows 7 options will be available: Windows 7 Starter Edition, which will only be able to run three apps at a time; Windows 7 Home Premium for consumers; and Windows 7 Professional edition, aimed at business users. That could lead to three
pricing options for Windows 7 netbooks, depending on the version you choose — in addition to pricing variations when netbooks ship with Linux instead.

Nokia launching a Symbian app store at MWC?

Because you’re not cool unless you’ve got an app store, Nokia is reportedly set to join the ranks of Apple, Palm, BlackBerry, Samsung, and pretty much everyone in opening a software portal for its Symbian OS. According to Mobile-Review editor Eldar Murtazin, the Finnish phone maker’s already got it running and is testing behind-the-scenes, with a formal announcement to come at the Mobile World Congress. While we’ll have to wait until Barcelona to find out with some degree of certainty, at this point we’d be more surprised to see a company not open up an online app shop.

June Launch Appears Likely for Next iPhone

IphoneAn international report might have given away Apple’s plans to launch the next iPhone in June.

Etisalat, a mobile carrier in the Middle East and Africa, announced in a local newspaper that the iPhone 3G will soon be supported in the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia.

The report adds that "the next version of the device, which is due out in June, will be launched in the UAE at the same time."

The report doesn’t cite a source, but AppleInsider speculates the information came from Mark Davis, program director for iPhone at Etisalat, who previously confirmed the 3G’s Etisalat launch date to be Feb. 15.

A June launch date for the next iPhone isn’t very exciting news, as it’s kind of a no-brainer: The first and second iPhones launched in June 2007 and July 2008, respectively.

Little is known about Apple’s next iPhone, but some developers and analysts believe the new device will have a strong focus on gaming.

Rumor: iPhone App Store Will Feature $20 Games Section

Iphonegame

Apple might be planning to create a premium game section in its iPhone App Store.

Game blog PocketGamer.biz claims receiving a tip from anonymous sources, who said Apple will be introducing a new section to its App Store, where it will sell $20 games.

Typically games in the App Store cost no more than $10; many are even free. Though there’s very little to substantiate PocketGamer’s rumor, it’s a highly valid one: Apple recently touted the iPhone as a serious gaming console, calling it "the future of gameplay."

The idea of more complex, premium games in the App Store corroborates with Wired.com’s analysis that the next-generation iPhone will be beefed up for serious gaming.

Olympus Readying New Micro Four Thirds Cameras

Body_lens

It’s a rumor, but it’s a good one. According to Russian website Photogenius, Olympus has a couple of chunky compact digicams lined up for launch, most probably at the PMA tradeshow in Las Vegas this coming March. Both will be based on the Micro Four Thirds standard, the Panasonic/Olympus double-team which promises tiny SLR cameras.

The "leaked" specs say that there will be the M-1, with a 3.2" LCD, a 12-45 ƒ2.4-3.5 lens that can shoot hi-def video up to 1080p, joined by the M-100 with a 14-70 ƒ3.5-5.6 lens. Interestingly, the M-100 is supposed to look just like the concept camera which Olympus showed at Photokina last September, the hot looking number pictured above.

From what we can tell, the cameras will have, despite their compact camera looks, interchangeable lenses, and there may be another lens announced soon after the cams —  a 45-150 ƒ2.8-4 with the reassuringly accurate weight of 550 grams (19 Oz). As usual, we’ll have to wait and see, but if this thing works as good as it looks, Olympus could have a hit.

Apple working on a 15-inch MacBook Air?

Sketchy rumor Sunday, people — Chinese site Apple.pro is saying there’s a 15-inch MacBook Air in the works. That would certainly be an interesting compromise between portability and screen real estate, especially since the Air’s new NVIDIA-based internals are actually somewhat capable, but we wouldn’t bank on big brother making an appearance just yet — although Apple.pro was right on the money with leaked unibody MacBook pictures, it’s also been way off in the past. Anyone else mildly intrigued by the idea of a thin’n’light with big screen? Comments await.

Steve Jobs Said to Be Considering Liver Transplant

Jobs

People monitoring Steve Jobs’ illness say the sick CEO is considering a liver transplant, Bloomberg reports.

Bloomberg had no additional details regarding Jobs’ condition.

"Why don’t you guys leave me alone — why is this
important?" said Jobs, in a phone interview with Bloomberg.

In a letter to Apple staff on Wednesday, the CEO announced his five-month medical leave.

In an open letter that Jobs published just last week, the CEO cited hormone imbalance as the cause for his noticeable weight loss. However, in Wednesday’s letter to staff Jobs said he "learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally
thought."

Rumor: 3G-Equipped HP Mini Note to Ship June

Pr_hp_mini_660x_f

Hewlett-Packard’s next netbook is shipping February, and you shouldn’t buy it.

That’s because HP plans to release an upgrade for the netbook just four months later, according to a Taiwanese publication.

DigiTimes cites "sources at notebook makers" who claim the HP Mini 2150 is set for release in June — just four months after the Mini 2140 hits stores.

Unlike its predecessor, the Mini 2150 will ship with a built-in 3G modem. That was the only difference disclosed.

Early January, HP showcased its Mini 2140 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The Mini 2140 features a 10.1-inch widescreen LED display, a keyboard that’s 92 percent the size of a standard keyboard and a six-cell battery that HP says will last eight hours. Marketed for business users, the Mini 2140 starts at $500.

Price details for the Mini 2150 have not been revealed, but you can expect HP to keep it close to the same cost as the Mini 2140.

A 3G modem may not sound like a big deal, but I personally think it’s a feature worth waiting a few months for. Imagine a scenario where you’re in dire need for an internet connection but can’t find a Wi-Fi hotspot. With a 3G modem you could purchase a one-day pass to browse the web, and presto — problem solved.

And if you don’t wish to wait till June for a 3G-equipped netbook, you can always look at other options such as the MSI Wind U120, which is already shipping.

Atom-Powered Mac Mini in March? Probably Not

Mac_mini_2
An upcoming Apple system will be based on a new low-powered platform from Nvidia, according to tech blog Tom’s Hardware.

The blog reported receiving a tip from an Nvidia partner claiming Apple received prototypes of Nvidia’s Ion platform.

The Ion platform consists of a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor (similar to the CPU used to power netbooks) and the same graphics processing unit (Nvidia 9400M) used in Apple’s latest aluminum MacBooks.

Tom’s Hardware predicted that Ion must be the platform being used in the next Mac Mini, Apple’s portable desktop system, which is long overdue for an upgrade.

The source also told Tom’s Hardware that Apple will launch a new Mac Mini in March.

However, we find it very unlikely that the next Mac Mini will be based on Ion. That would be a downgrade from the current Mac Minis, which are powered by an Intel Core 2 Duo chip — much faster than Atom.

Incorporating Ion into a Mac Mini would equate to a significantly smaller computer, but we doubt Apple would make such a compromise in performance for the sake of extreme miniaturization.

So the question remains: If the Ion rumor is true, what could Apple be using the platform for? A smaller Apple TV perhaps? Is Apple finally working on a netbook? It’s certainly a head scratcher, and we don’t have any solid ideas. What do you think?

Rumored Mac Mini refresh said to be Ion-based

People trading in salacious gossip have been counting on an update of the Mac mini for ages now, with most of the rumors centering on it making its appearance at Macworld. Well, the festivities came and went without a peep about the mini — but that hasn’t stopped the rumors from swirling. The latest we’re hearing is that the refresh will be built upon NVIDIA’s new Ion platform, which houses a 9400M GPU — the same graphics processor as the new unibody Macbooks — and could mean an even minier mini than the one we already know. Tom’s Hardware, the source of this newest rumor, also speculates on a March release date, though they’re not guessing on the price just yet.
