HTC and Samsung license entire Intellectual Ventures patent portfolio, gear up for war

Looks like HTC and Samsung are taking some aggressive steps to protect themselves from Android patent litigation — in the past week both companies have entered into long-term patent licensing agreements with Nathan Myhrvold’s Intellectual Ventures. (Mhyrvold was once Microsoft’s chief technology officer, but he’s arguably more famous for Intellectual Ventures.) Both HTC and Samsung now have access to IV’s entire portfolio of “more than 30,000 IP assets” to wield against current or potential legal opponents — like, say, Apple or Oracle — and IV also plans to help them manage their existing patent portfolios. It sounds to us like HTC and Samsung decided that they needed more patent muscle in order to survive in the now crazy-litigious smartphone market, and indeed, the PR announcing the HTC deal flatly says the smartphone maker is “working with IV to mitigate its patent risk.”

Of course, this is also a bit of a deal with the devil — Intellectual Ventures might be the most infamous patent troll in history, and HTC and Samsung have essentially decided the risks and cost of doing business with IV are more favorable than the risks and cost of going to court. Either way, we’ll see how this all shakes out — and we’ve got a feeling that the Apple / HTC lawsuit is about to get seriously interesting.

LG Quantum, HTC Surround and Samsung Focus: BOGO from AT&T starting Friday

Here’s hoping you didn’t choose to adopt early. Not even three weeks after Windows Phone 7 went on sale in the US of A comes this: a buy one, get one free sale christened by Microsoft and AT&T. Starting November 26th (that’s Black Friday, we’ll have you know), sleepy-eyed consumers can drag themselves into their local AT&T store in order to pick up an LG Quantum, HTC Surround or Samsung Focus in BOGO fashion — best of all, you can mix and match, enabling users to snag a Quantum and a Surround (or a Focus) for just $199. Naturally, you’ll still be signing a pair of two-year agreements with Ma Bell, but it’s still the cheapest way to indulge in WP7 for the time being. There’s no telling when the deal will end, but common sense would say to jump in early if you’ve got a hankerin’.

Samsung Shifts 600,000 Galaxy Tabs in One Month

Despite being hamstrung by an operating system designed for the smaller screen of a smartphone, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab has sold an impressive 600,000 units in less than a month. That’s pretty close to the iPad’s initial sales, which reached one million in 28 days.

It’s important to remember that the iPad’s first month was largely confined to the domestic U.S market, whereas the 7-inch Tab has been available all over the world since launch. In fact, according to the Korea Herald, Samsung has shifted just 30,000 Tabs in its own home market of Korea.

Remember, too, that a large proportion of these sales will have been subsidized by telcos, lowering the ~$600 price-tag in exchange for a data-contract.

But these numbers are impressive by any standards, and show that there is a huge demand out there for super-portable computers with the battery life and connectivity of a cellphone. It seems that the Galaxy Tab really is a real rival to the iPad, just like we thought.

WiFi-only Galaxy Tab hits Best Buy for $499.99 only to be delayed by Samsung?

Remember the leaked promo material for the $499.99 WiFi-only Samsung Galaxy Tab headed to Best Buy? Well, SKU 1409447 of the 7-inch Android tablet is being promoted right now in the weekly ads on Best Buy’s very own mobile site. Unfortunately, our urge to celebrate is tempered by a sneaky pic of a Best Buy “pullback” (found after the break) noting that the WiFi-only Galaxy Tab is not in fact available due to manufacturer delay. The whole Best Buy listing turns out to be an unhappy comedy of errors showing a non-existent “silver” 3G model on Sprint and wishful “Super AMOLED” display. Ugh.

Samsung says it’s sold 600,000 Galaxy Tabs worldwide

Samsung said it expected to sell a million Galaxy Tabs this year, and it looks like it may not be far off that mark, if it doesn’t exceed it — the company has apparently told The Korea Herald that it’s sold 600,000 of the tablets worldwide so far, less than a month after launch. That includes 30,000 units sold in Korea since its November 14th launch there, but Samsung doesn’t seem to be dishing out specific numbers for the rest of the world just yet. Of course, as impressive as that is, it may well be all downhill from here once word of Russian president Dmitry Medvedev’s frown gets around.

Nexus S still leaking on public photostreams, showing exciting new angles

We know that Samsung’s upcoming Gingerbread-powered Nexus S is curved in a pretty unusual way, and a new photo on Picasa — on one of the same photostreams where we’ve seen “Nexus S” and “GT-i9020” in the EXIF data before — gives us a new glimpse of the phone at a three-quarter view where we can really see just how curved it is. It’s still unclear to us whether the display is involved in the curving or if it’s restricted to the bezel above and below the actual screen, but either way, it’s a distinctive design element that’s sure to attract a lot of attention. Interestingly, the picture was captured on a Google employee’s stream just this weekend, suggesting devices are definitely still out in the field — so let’s hope it launches right alongside Android 2.3 in the next few weeks.

[Thanks, John]

Dmitry Medvedev Owns Samsung Galaxy Tab, Thinks Camera Sucks

Dmitry_Medvedev_samsung_tweet.jpg

Dmitry Medvedev reportedly got his hands on Sumsung’s new Galazy Tab during a trip to South Korea. The Russian president was in the country to talk trade opportunities. Thus far Medvedev doesn’t seem to have all that much to say about the device, though he did take the time to tweet the fact that he’s not a huge fan of the device’s GT-P1000’s camera in melancholy prose fit for a Dostoyevsky novel,

Winter comes to Moscow. Picture taken with a Samsung Galaxy Tab. It’s convenient, but the quality isn’t great 🙁

For the record, he also got his presidential hands on a Leica M9, so the bar might be a little high for him, insofar as picture quality is concerned, at the moment.

We assume that the Russian government is opening an inquiry into the use of presidential emoticons as we write this.

Russian president not fond of Galaxy Tab camera, <3s emoticons

Seems that Russian president, Dmitry Medvedev, picked up a Galaxy Tab on his recent trip to Samsung’s home country of South Korea while seeking investment and trade opportunities. Unfortuntely, he doesn’t seem to be much of a fan of the GT-P1000’s camera according to a recent tweet made from his certified Twitter account. Apparently, he prefers the quality of his trusty Leica M9 camera spotted in the EXIF of the images he posted from Japan just a few days prior — the $17,500 Neiman Marcus edition, we presume. Proof once again that it’s good to be king Президент.

[Thanks, Oleg]

Yahoo! Connected TV store will let developers start charging for apps in March 2011

Yahoo! has been building its Connected TV widget platform up since debuting at CES 2009 and opening up its SDK in 2010, and it’s already getting started on a new push for 2011 – paid apps. Right now the various TVs from Samsung, Sony, VIZIO, Toshiba and LG based on its platform only offer free widgets but the Connected TV Store is expected to launch in March, letting developers hawk their wares at the remote-wielding masses for anywhere from 99 cents to $99, with Yahoo! receiving a 30 percent cut for its trouble. Kadoo, PlayJam, Virtual Nerd, ScreenDreams, Accedo Broadband and Mycast weather are already testing the waters and the company promises a full demo at CES 2011. Since we figure it’s only a matter of time until Apple works its app store into the Apple TV, Google has already announced its plans to add the Market to Google TV next year and everyone from Samsung to Boxee is actively courting developers in the living room, 2011 should be a very interesting year.
