So it seems pretty likely that HTC will give us an Android tablet at some point, although any hard and fast details continue to elude us. Speaking at the Open Mobile Summit, however, HTC’s VP of Europe, Dr. Florian Seiche, did give us a clue as to how things were headed: “Our study found women social networking while watching television was a likely use for tablets.” We have to wonder if this so-called “Facebook and Cougar Town” demographic were what Jobs & Co, had in mind when they decided to go ahead with the iPad. If so, they were wise to keep the information to themselves.

Eh, those kiddos don’t need no physical keyboards and power cranks, right? Right! In a presumed effort to both keep with the times and take advantage of what’s being served to them on a silver platter, the philanthropic souls over at One Laptop Per Child have teamed with Marvell in order to develop the next OLPC — which, predictably, will be a tablet. The forthcoming range of XO tablets will be based on Marvell’s newly loosed ‘Moby‘ reference design (which we recently toyed with), and given that purported $99 price tag, you can see why the tie-up makes sense. The slate will require but one watt of power to operate (compared to ~five watts on the existing XO laptop), and it’ll include a multilingual soft keyboard with touch feedback in order to serve various regions of the globe. As for specs, we’re told that the device will boast an ARMADA 610 application processor, “gigahertz processor speed,” 1080p encode / decode capabilities, 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth, FM radio support, a GPS module and the ability to play back 3D graphics and Adobe Flash videos (zing!). There’s also an integrated camera for live video conferencing, not to mention Moby’s ability to support Android, Windows Mobile and / or Ubuntu. All we’re told about battery life is that it’s designed “expressly” to last a good, long while, and scarily enough, there’s no confirmation anywhere that these will actually cost less than a Benjamin whenever they ship. Fingers crossed, though.

Brace for a storm of craptablets: this week, Taiwanese semiconductor firm VIA said its processors will appear in a new slate of cheap Android tablets destined for the US in the second half of this year. Speaking to Bloomberg, VIA marketing head Richard Brown said the company’s Chinese customers will ship around five tablets, that they’ll appear at $100 to $150 price points, and that “the tablet market has been legitimized by Apple” — that last likely in an attempt to make Bloomberg utter the words “VIA” and “iPad” in the same breath. (It worked.) Mind you, the iPad certainly isn’t the be-all, end-all of tablet computing, but we wouldn’t expect to get a legitimate iPad killer for $100, either. We think we said it best in April: you get what you pay for.

To say we’ve been waiting “awhile” for the ExoPC to fully emerge from under its veil and begin shipping to the world at large would be a startling understatement, but it looks like the holding period is just… about… over. We’re personally getting some one-on-one time in the coming days once we touch down in Taipei for this year’s Computex expo, but in the meantime, those who fancy machine translation (or who learned far too much during those high school French courses) can dig into an overview from the folks over at Blogue de Geek, who were recently able to sit down with a prototype version of the Windows 7 slate and give it a nice once-over. By and large, they were duly impressed with what they saw, noting that video playback was flawless (thanks, Broadcom!) and that bootup was shockingly quick considering that a full-on desktop OS is included. Hit that source link to get a taste (or just past the break for a video), and be sure to keep it locked here next week for continued coverage.

Update: Looks like the final product name will simply be “slate” and there will be four models to choose from: 32GB WiFi, 32GB WiFi + 3G / GPS, 64GB WiFi and 64GB WiFi + 3G / GPS.

Want to draw attention to an otherwise ordinary piece of consumer electronics? Do something emotive like, say, smash a giant Apple ice sculpture in front of the world’s Chinese press. Besides putting the boys in Cupertino on notice, Hanvon‘s officially launching the company’s TouchPad B10 — a 10.1-inch multitouch capacitive slate that we went hands-on with back in March. A €500ish device that runs Windows 7 on a retired 1.3GHz Celeron M ULV743 processor and Intel GMA 4500 graphics capable of delivering about 3.5 hours of battery life. Other specs include 2GB of memory, a regular ol’ 2.5-inch 250GB or 320GB hard disk, HDMI-out, and WiFi. Watch the theatrics after the break while we wait for Hanvon’s 1 million units sold announcement.
