Toshiba TG02 hands-on

We were all over Toshiba’s drop dead thin and gorgeous TG01 last year, so naturally a chance to peek at the rumored TG02 first hand was something we couldn’t pass up. Very little is new here, the touchscreen technology has seen resistive swapped with capacitive, the device has become a wee bit smaller while retaining the monster 4.1-inch display, and some 3D touches have been added to the SPB Mobile Shell-skinned Windows Mobile 6.5 OS. Like its older sibling, the handset is still a thing of beauty and the 1GHz Snapdragon does make it all purr along very nicely — and while the UI isn’t really a custom one — we like the ability to flip between pages kinda like iPhone and Android do now. All in, this is a pretty decent effort, and removing some of the pain that was the resistive display can only make the TG02 better. Follow on for a tour and a gallery of shots.

Toshiba K01 hands-on

Toshiba’s K01 is exactly what we would’ve liked to have seen as a complementary set to the TG01. Happily, Toshiba’s given us a QWERTY option with the new model, added capacitive touch, and swapped out the earlier display for a swanky new AMOLED version. Key feel is a bit rough on the outside keys — shift, delete, enter — but this device still isn’t final, and with all that real estate, the layout feels just great. In fact, the devices being shown on the floor are just looping a demo video and not really showing off the UI as seen above; we couldn’t get any film of it, so the pics we got will have to suffice. We like what they’ve done here — in fact, this could make an excellent day to day set if battery life proves good enough. We also can’t help but notice the three buttons (soft touch) across the bottom that could quite easily be skinned for Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 Series, could they not? Acer Liquid e rolls with Android 2.1, underclocked 768MHz Snapdragon

We knew good and well Acer was prepared to ship a few more Android phones in the new decade, and it’s sure starting off on the right foot here in Barcelona. Just a few months after the original Liquid began to ship, along comes a minor upgrade in the Liquid e. The main improvements? For starters, Android 2.1 has supplanted Android 1.6 as the onboard operating system, but much to our displeasure, the Snapdragon in this bad boy is still underclocked to 768MHz. If you still have the will to care, you’ll get to enjoy the 3.5-inch WVGA display, 5 megapixel camera (with AutoFocus), inbuilt GPS, 802.11b/g WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0, 256MB of RAM, an accelerometer, 3.5mm headphone jack and support for 7.2Mbps HSDPA. Toshiba updates TG01 handset with the TG02

Toshiba‘s just let slip its MWC press, and here’s what we’ve got: the TG01’s successor… the TG02. It’s a minor update to the original, and yes — it’s exact to that early prototype roadmap leak we saw way back in April. On offer here, we’ve got this 9.9mm badboy with a 4.1-inch capacitive WVGA touchscreen, 1GHz processor, and a newly retooled 3D menu to boot, running Windows Mobile 6.5. All in all, as we said, a pretty minor update to the handset. There’s no firm information for now as to when the TG02 will launch, or how much it’ll cost. We’ll let you know when we do. Compaq Airlife 100 puts Android OS, Snapdragon CPU, and an SSD behind 10.1-inch touchscreen

HP’s mobile computing unit appears to have decided that the term smartbook refers to putting a smartphone’s components inside a netbook’s body — which kind of makes sense — so they’ve built their Airlife 100 atop an Android OS platform, underpinned by a Snapdragon CPU (unconfirmed, but highly likely), a 16GB SSD, 3G and WiFi connectivity, and a 10.1-inch touchscreen display. We really can find no cause for complaint — in fact this is the most excitement a Compaq-branded product has caused us… ever. HP touts a rock solid 12-hour battery life for the Airlife, which stretches out to a mighty 10 days of standby, in case you’re one of those folks who hate to switch their electronics off. Announced in partnership with Telefonica, this smartbook will be offered as a subsidized part of mobile broadband service plans in Europe and Latin America. It may well find itself renamed under the HP Mini branding when it rolls around to the US, but for now head on over to Engadget Spanish for the full PR.

Is this the Motorola MOTOSPLIT?

Okay, we’re not anywhere close to 100 percent on this, but we just got a blurry screenshot of something we’re told is the Motorola MOTOSPLIT, a Snapdragon-powered Android set in the vein of the Droid with a totally wild split-horizontal sliding QWERTY keyboard. Yeah, we want one — it reminds us of the beloved Nokia 6820, although it’s much thinner. We’re told this thing is coming to AT&T in Q3, which makes sense; we’ve only pinned down three of Ma Bell’s five planned Android devices, and this would be a nice higher-end compliment to the Backflip. We’ll keep an eye out — and you let us know if you hear anything good, okay?

Update: Yes, we know it’s a render, sheesh. We have a bit of a history with Motorola and renders, you know.

HP Compaq AirLife 100 smartbook hits the FCC

There’s unfortunately not much in the way of details or pictures (beyond that artful illustration above) for this one, but HP has sent a smartbook called the Compaq AirLife 100 the FCC’s way, and the bands in use suggest that it could well be headed to AT&T. As you may recall, however, HP was also showing off an Android-running, Snapdragon-powered smartbook concept at CES a few short weeks back, and those rounded corners and large battery compartment do at least seem to match up. Coincidence? We should know for sure soon enough.

Dell Mini 5 teardown reveals Snapdragon guts and 3G SIM (video)

As long as Dell chooses to be stingy with the details of its upcoming 5-inch Mini 5 (codenamed Streak) MID we’ll just have to suss out the specs from more nefarious sources. And who better to fill in the blanks than the kids over at Tinhte — the original source of the leaked Android handheld that got official at CES? The Vietnamese site did the world a solid today by tearing into a Mini 5 sample revealing a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, two microSD slots, and a bigger 1,530mAh battery than the original 1,300mAh baby we saw back in October. The site also confirms the SIM slot with 3G radio and taste for faux 80s metal. See what we mean in the video (and bonus pic) after the break.

HTC ‘Supersonic’ to ring in WiMAX on Sprint, Android-style

Remember that mysterious HTC A9292 with WiMAX rumored for Sprint a few days back? Well, take a seat, folks — we think we’ve got the lowdown on it here from a trusted source, and it’s a bit of a monster:

  • Codename is “Supersonic” — a name we’ve heard at least once before.
  • Feels a lot like you’d expect an Android-powered HD2 to feel thanks to a 4.3-inch non-AMOLED display and a svelte shell. (For reference, the HD2 is 11mm thick, but we don’t have exact dimensions here.)
  • It’s got a kickstand on the back. This wouldn’t be a first for HTC; the Imagio on Verizon has one, for example.
  • Runs Android 2.1 with HTC’s Sense UI.
  • Our tipster saw it in white; production devices could be available in different colors, of course, but white seems like it’d be an intriguing choice for a phone of the HD2’s size and shape.
  • The phone’s software stack is buggy enough right now to suggest that we’re not looking at a release any time soon, but we don’t have details on the projected launch window.
  • It’s fast — Snapdragon fast, it seems, though our tipster can’t confirm the processor under the hood.

We know 2010’s just begun, but between all this noise and the promise of a legitimate 4G radio on board, let’s be real — we’re already looking at a very, very early contender for smartphone of the year. Let’s not run into any major roadblocks between here and retail, alright, guys?

Acer Liquid now available in black, only wants Queen’s money

While we have yet to see the Acer Liquid popping up for real on American soil, the lucky Brits have just been treated to a second color option — black — for this underclocked Snapdragon Android phone. Still no sign of the red option that Acer promised, though. Price remains steady at around £330 (which is about $537) at a couple of UK e-tailers, but hey, with that shiny $529 tag on the Nexus One it’s hard to be mad at our British friends. Let’s hope Google and Vodafone can work out something nice for them.
