Hasta La Gadget!

That rumored Galaxy S Pro is very real and very official for Sprint this evening, ‘cept it’s not actually called the Galaxy S Pro — instead, it’ll be known as the Epic 4G when it comes to market “in the coming months.” Like the EVO 4G before it, the Epic 4G sort of blows everything out of the water on paper: 4-inch Super AMOLED display, 5 megapixel primary camera with LED flash and 720p video recording paired with a VGA front-facing cam for video calls, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, six-axis accelerometer, and a 1GHz Hummingbird core. Oh, and of course let’s not forget those EV-DO Rev. A and WiMAX radios, the latter of which will earn you theoretical downlink speeds in excess of 10Mbps — speeds that will work nicely with the phone’s five-device mobile hotspot support (three devices fewer than the EVO 4G, interestingly).

As software goes, the Epic 4G will be running Samsung’s reworked version of Android 2.1 offering features like DLNA support and Social Hub. In other words, this is the closest you’re going to get to an EVO 4G with a landscape QWERTY slide — and at 14.2mm thick, you’re only about a millimeter and a half thicker than HTC’s entry. Like AT&T’s Captivate, the Epic 4G is being described as “a Galaxy S smartphone,” so it’s pretty clear that Samsung’s looking to group all of these things under a global brand with big-time name recognition. Neither pricing nor a launch date have been announced — but hey, the EVO deserves a few more days in the spotlight, wouldn’t you say? Follow the break for Sprint’s press release.

Hoo boy. This is a tough one, isn’t it? In our years at Engadget, we’ve rarely seen such deafening debate and adulation for a pair of devices. In one corner we have the iPhone 4, coming off a few relatively easy rounds atop the smartphone mind share heap. However, the Droid and its ilk have weakened Apple’s spot, and here comes the HTC EVO 4G in for the kill, sporting a larger screen, 4G data, and all manner of HTC sexy. If the devices themselves weren’t enough, the debate has turned into something larger and metaphorical, with Apple representing tight restrictions and a singular top down vision, while Google’s Android stands for something perhaps a bit more haphazard but democratizing. Remember that cute-as-a-button 3G / 4G dual-mode WWAN stick that Clearwire outed a few days back? That little guy just made its way over to the Sprint side of things, giving folks yet another option when it comes time to pull the trigger on a device to get you onto the WiMAX superhighway. The Sierra Wireless-built 250U is available now through Business Direct and Business Solutions Partners followed by full channel availability by mid-July, with this bugger being the first in Sprint’s arsenal to offer native dual-mode support in OS X as well as twin antenna ports. Naturally, Windows machines are also compatible, and the minuscule design sure makes it more attractive than those prone-to-snapping alternatives. It’s available for precisely nothing so long as you sign a two-year data plan.

It’s happened before, and it’s happening again: the EVO 4G’s getting hard to find. We’re sure you’d be able to track it down locally, but the option that requires the least dreadful physical movement — ordering online — isn’t an option for now, with Sprint saying “this device is so hot we can’t keep it on our virtual shelves.” We imagine the situation will clear itself up shortly, but it makes you wonder — could the screen separation fix on the assembly line be the culprit behind the shortage?

Jumpin’ Jehosaphat! Just when you thought America’s first 4G phone couldn’t get any hotter, along comes this: a striking white version of the HTC EVO 4G (so much for that unavailable white iPhone 4, eh?). We’ve received confirmation that this here handset will be sold exclusively through Best Buy (as in, don’t even bother heading to your local Sprint store), with the official launch date set for July 11th. We’re told that Sprint will eventually gain access on August 8th, with other retailers snapping it up in September. If you somehow managed to hold off on snagging the existing black EVO 4G, you can get your pre-order in starting on June 18th — yeah, today, Junior! We’re assuming the price will remain at $199.99 on a 2-year contract, but be sure to drop us a line if you wander in and find out otherwise.

Update: And it’s official; the presser is after the break confirming the same $199.99-on-a-2-year-contract price as well as the dates mentioned already.

Update 2: Turns out this thing was around way back at Google I/O! Head on past the break and mash play — that’s definitely a white-backed EVO 4G on stage. Thanks, Omar!
