Switched On: A new spin on external hard drives, part one

Consumer hard disk connectors have been pretty stable for the past few years. Most internal drives use SATA connectors and most external drives connect via USB; there hasn’t seemed to be much frustration with this other than the speed of USB 2.0, which is showing its age and is being superseded by the backward-compatible USB 3.0. Seagate, though, is betting big that a new series of breakaway connectors will bring the old usage model of floppy drives into the 21st Century and accommodate complete media libraries, as well as include a few new twists that take into account such modern tasks as media streaming, remote access and networked entertainment.

Switched On: Revamps in Motion

Before the iPhone’s release, there were four major smartphone operating systems — Symbian, Palm OS, Windows Mobile, and BlackBerry OS. And after the iPhone’s release, their user interfaces all seemed dated in some way. Palm OS and Windows Mobile have essentially been replaced by new operating systems dubbed WebOS and Windows Phone 7. Symbian stakeholders, though, has decided that there is no need to throw out the past completely, and are instead looking toward a series of evolutionary upgrades to make the now open source operating system more competitive.

This week at RIM’s WES conference, the company is announcing a similar evolutionary path for the BlackBerry OS. Like Symbian, the BlackBerry OS has a reputation for being fast and efficient but has not kept up with many of the aesthetic and input amenities offered by more modern competitors. The challenge will be to preserve what users love about the platform while disrupting it in many ways. For example, while the new BlackBerry OS will be better optimized for touchscreens, reports are that it will not require one.

Switched On: The weighty issues of slates

Slates may seek to occupy a device class in between smartphones and notebooks, but they have their own dynamics. If the closest real-world counterpart for the PC was the desktop, the closest real-world counterpart for the slate may be the clipboard, a platform that aggregates and recalls important resources on the go but isn’t something most people need access to all the time.

And with the change in usage comes different design priorities. Like a laptop, slates will be judged on factors such as speed, screen size, and battery life. But one spec that will take on new significance compared to other mobile devices is weight. This stems from the slate’s unique hybrid of smartphone and notebook usage scenarios. The natural limits of the size of smartphones put a de facto upper limit on how heavy they can be. A few ounces isn’t going to make a big difference in arm fatigue, even for most calls; there are Bluetooth headsets to alleviate longer ones. And the nature of smartphone apps also tends to favor short usage sessions.

Switched On: Kin dread spirit

When deciding how to bring technologies to market, companies face the decision of whether to offer them in its own products, pursuing a strategy of vertical integration, or license constituent elements for inclusion in others’ products. In the wireless operating system space, Apple, RIM and Palm (since Web OS) have chosen the former strategy while Symbian, Google (via Android and Chrome OS) and Microsoft have generally pursued the latter. It is difficult, if not unwise, for a licensing company to compete with its partners. Attempting to avoid this dynamic led to the disastrous split of Palm, Inc. into the PalmSource software company and PalmOne hardware company back in 2003. With the imminent release of its teen-targeted, social networking handset, though, Microsoft is seeking to have its Kin and eat it, too.

Switched On: MyDitto NAS has some key issues

MyDitto is the cloud-accessible NAS for people who don't know what NAS stands for

There are many devices that allow one to remotely access your digital content at home when you’re on the road. These include low-cost remote access appliances like the PogoPlug, midrange NAS storage devices such as Netgear’s Stora, and expensive but powerful solutions that cater to the technically inclined, such as HP’s MediaSmart products powered by Windows Home Server.

Now, however, Dane Elec — best-known for selling USB flash drives and memory cards at retailers such as Target — has jumped into the shared storage space with an offering called MyDitto. The late entrant seeks to overcome some of the setup and access complexities of other products in its class, bringing network storage beyond the early adopters. While MyDitto incorporates a number of good ideas, though, its advantages help only in a limited number of NAS usage scenarios.

Switched On: Courier courts the creative

Call it Apple’s populist paradox. The Macintosh’s human-centered design inspired its being called the “computer for the rest of us,” but the Mac also long been associated with exceptional creative individuals, a message Apple has driven home in campaigns ranging from “wheels from the mind” to “think different.” In the early days of the Web, it was said that Web pages were created on Macs and viewed on PCs — and served on Unix workstations.

Should the concepts in a video detailing a new Microsoft-developed device dubbed Courier come to fruition, though, Microsoft and Apple may find themselves on unfamiliar sides as an old rivalry turns to the new frontier of convergence tablets, with Apple providing the workaday access product and Microsoft providing a niche but empowering tool aimed at creative professionals.

Switched on: Giving fax the axe

Today’s smartphones handle voice conversations, short texts, email, instant messages, and tweets from around the globe. They are moving toward real-time translation of languages — and if the batteries malfunction, they can even send smoke signals. But if there is one staple of communication that has seemed immune from “app-ification,” it is the fax machine. This dial-up dinosaur has proven so resilient that it seems certain that the mutant cockroaches surviving humanity may find some use for 14,400 bits per second document transmissions. However, a recently launched $3 app for the iPhone may be the harbinger of the demise of the fax, or at least for one of its most common rationales.

Switched On: Halting Total Customization

Throughout the histories of Windows Mobile and Android, many handset developers have talked the talk of supporting these mobile operating systems, dribbling out a couple of handsets per year as they focused on other priorities. But not HTC. The company has created more Windows Mobile and Android handsets than companies many times its size, and in fact developed the very first Android handset. Microsoft cited HTC at Mobile World Congress 2009 for being an exceptional partner, while Google’s Nexus One is an HTC-built handset sold exclusively by the search giant.

HTC has done more than simply create a lot of phones for these operating systems. It has attracted attention for its designs that include some of the largest displays and best QWERTY keyboards, as well as clever touches like the Touch Pro2’s speakerphone, which activates simply by placing the handset face down on a table during a call. But most distinctively, HTC has invested heavily in developing engaging user interfaces on top of both mobile OS foundations, with development teams focused on delivering skins like TouchFLO and Sense to both Windows Mobile and Android. But now that Microsoft is radically changing Windows Phone 7 Series, HTC will have to change course, and in the process lose the distinction of having its custom user experiences live across both Windows Mobile and Android.

Switched On: Thumbs up, thumbs down at TiVo Premiere

TiVo’s announcement of TiVo Premiere represents the most significant user interface overhaul for the device in years. Based on Adobe Flash and optimized for the high-definition screens that are likely to be paired with CableCARD programming, the new user interface blends together live, recorded, and broadband content. That presentation is more akin to what we’ve seen from Windows Media Center, and less like TiVo’s Series3 that segmented programming sources by type. TiVo has also beefed up its search capability, bringing it up to par with that of its only significant retail DVR competitor, Digeo’s Moxi.

The new interaction widens the user experience gap between TiVo and your average cable or satellite DVR, and TiVo has two other features that set it apart. First, no doubt reacting to the Moxi competition, TiVo long ago reinstated its lifetime service option that was so popular in the product’s early years. However, those who have opted for this plan through TiVo’s major platform upgrades over the years have endured more lifetime sentences than many a felon.

Switched On: Why it’s time for an iTunes TV subscription

In the 10 billionth song that Apple sold through iTunes, Johnny Cash’s “Guess Things Happen That Way”, a man other than Steve Jobs famous for black attire bemoans the happenstance of his romantic misfortune. But nothing could be further from the story of iTunes, in which Apple’s meticulously crafted ownership of the end-user experience led to a dominant position in music sales. Now, on the dawn of releasing a new device that could be to television shows what the iPod was to music, Apple has an opportunity to create as commanding a lead in TV distribution — if it is willing to again capitulate to consumers’ media consumption habits.

Apple has enjoyed great success with iTunes in part because it adopted the purchase-to-own model that had been so successful with CDs and records before them. However, Apple didn’t simply mirror that model. By allowing consumers to purchase the vast majority of songs as singles, it provided better perceived value, Such an option was also a natural fit for the iPod, where playlists made it trivial to create the digital equivalent of “mix tapes.” The iPod’s capacity for thousands of songs was also no match for most albums that typically had a dozen or so songs.
