Acer’s 7-inch Iconia Tab A100 priced at £300 in UK, launching April 20th

Boy oh boy, these Taiwanese companies are seriously gunning to take the bottom out of the Honeycomb tablet market. After we saw ASUS stride forward with very competitive pricing on its 10-inch Eee Pad Transformer, we’re now being treated to Acer’s riposte, an eminently reasonable £300 ($483) price tag attached to its 7-inch Iconia Tab. Nothing is really skimped on here, you get the dual-core Tegra 2 and Android 3.0 one-two punch of hardware and software that’s become so popular lately, and of course the RAM is 512MB, not KB as indicated on Amazon’s listing. Perhaps the 8GB of storage will be a little on the light side, but given the price, we consider that a most forgivable shortcoming. Amazon notes the release date as April 20th in the UK and we doubt the rest of the world will have to wait much longer either.

Samsung Galaxy Tab’s WiFi-only version rumored to cost $399, arrive on April 4th

Shocking as it might be, we still haven’t had a Galaxy Tab from Samsung that rocks nothing but the WiFis, though that seems about to finally change. The 3G-deprived 7-inch Tab, promised for Q1 2011, has slipped on its schedule a little and looks set to now hit retail in the first week of April, at the admittedly appealing price of $399. Now, we all know the tablet market of April 2011 is shaping up to be extremely rich on machines with high specs, large screens and inflated opinions of themselves, but there could still be a fine little niche for an affordable, well built slate, even if it does only run on Froyo.

Samsung Galaxy Tab goes WiBro, yo

Making fun of WiBro — the Korean moniker for what’s otherwise known as IEEE 802.16e mobile WiMAX — never gets old. Fortunately, Samsung just gave us another reason to “pose hard” with the announcement of the WiBro- and T-DMB-equipped Galaxy Tab now available from the Korean operator KT for 900,000KRW or just a bit more than $800. Otherwise, it’s pretty much the same 7-inch Android tablet that’s about to get an 8.9 inch big brother on March 22nd. Hey Sprint, you seeing this?

Samsung’s latest 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab teaser hints impressive slimness

Samsung hasn’t been entirely shy about its forthcoming 8.9-inch tablet, though Mr. Blurrycam seems to be having some trouble getting on a plane in Seoul. Fortunately for us, today the Korean giant decided to give us mere mortals a sneak peek at said device, and it sure looks promising — as you can see above, the bulge seems to imply that the tablet’s general thickness almost matches the headphone jack’s height. If true, this would put Samsung’s 8.9-incher head to head with Apple’s 8.8mm thick iPad 2 in a fitness contest. Bring on March 22nd!

Freedom Mount Sticks Tablets to Almost Anything

The Freedom Mount will stick an iPad (and soon the Galaxy Tab) to almost anything

The Freedom Mount tablet holder from MountMe will let you mount your iPad (and soon your Galaxy Tab) on almost anything. Its seeminglly ridiculous levels of practicality are only matched by its aesthetic shortcomings.

The rather suggestively named Freedom Mount is a plastic case with a large appendage on the back. When not getting in the way and making it hard to put in a bag, this appendage can be used as a prop or multi-angle kickstand to prop the iPad up on table, leg or couch-arm. But It’s the range of included accessories which really make it flexible. First, there’s a strap which hooks into this rear assembly and wraps around your leg, or the headrest of a car or airplane (or bus or train) seat.

Second are the four suction cups, which hook into the keyhole-shaped cutouts on the Freedom Mount and let you secure the iPad onto mirrors, windows, bathroom tiles and other unsuitable places. Finally, you can opt to screw the mount direct to the wall for a more permanent solution. The mount will tilt and spin in place, so you still have some movement.

Almost every part of this willfully utilitarian design makes me want to ignore it, but it’s the plain bulkiness which seems to be the worst aspect. Right now I can slide my iPad into any bag and not notice it. Adding the MountMe to the setup makes it more like taking a baby out for a trip, which apparently can’t be done without a couple of holdalls worth of “baby stuff.”

The Freedom Mount costs $50 and comes in red, silver and black.

Samsung’s 8.9-inch Galaxy Tab likely to launch at CTIA

Torn between the 7-inch and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab? Well, it looks like Samsung is about to solve that problem for you come March 22nd. According to an invite making the rounds, the Samsung Mobile team is planning to hold a Mobile Unpacked event at CTIA in Orlando, and as the graphic suggests, the focus will be a new sized Tab. We’re assuming it will be an 8.9-inch version, since the invite shows an 8 and 9 flanked by a 7 and 10. That sure lines up with what we’ve heard before, but we have to admit, it does seems like a lot of tablet offerings for one company. For some odd reason, we haven’t received this invitation yet, but we’re assuming we’re invited (obviously, it’s not a party without Engadget!) and thus will be there covering all the action live. Stay tuned.

HTC Flyer vs. Galaxy Tab vs. iPad… fight!

In a world of 10-inch dual-core Androids, HTC has opted to tread its own path by cranking up processor speeds, sticking to a 7-inch form factor and eschewing the latest Honeycomb build for a Gingerbread version it could customize more comprehensively with Sense. All that’s well and good, but sometimes all it comes down to is how these gadgets look and feel. So to help you wrap your mind around the Flyer’s new aluminum body, we present a couple of comparison galleries with it set against two devices that need no introduction. Get clicking!

Vodafone UK lands Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 exclusive launch

We reported yesterday that Vodafone customers would be the first to get their hands on the lightweight 10.1-inch tablet, and now we’re getting word via Twitter that Vodafone UK will carry the Samsung’s Galaxy Tab 10.1 exclusively in Britain, at least to start. Thus far, that’s all she wrote — Vodafone’s tweet ends with “More info Coming soon!” but they’ve yet to follow up. So there’s still no confirmation of a solid release date — we’ve heard March for Asia and Europe — or pricing, and Americans eagerly awaiting the tablet’s Stateside debut have been left out in the cold, but at least our British friends will know where to go when the slim slate makes it to market.

[Thanks, Chris W.]

Samsung preparing a 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab 2 with Honeycomb for this Sunday?

Samsung’s MWC 2011 presentation is this Sunday, at 6PM Central European Time (midday for those on the American east coast). We already know it will feature a dual-core evolution to the Galaxy S smartphone and we know for a fact there’ll be at least one new tablet on show. Pocket-lint is today filling in some details about said Tab successor by identifying it as a 10.1-inch Android 3.0 device. That means Samsung is stepping right up to Motorola, whose Xoom still looks likely to be the first Honeycomb tablet to ship, and saying it can do better. It might just be able to do it, too, as the new and unnamed Tab is said to be physically smaller than Apple’s iPad in spite of having a slightly larger display. Somewhat less believable is the mention of a dual-core Qualcomm processor as the thing to power Samsung’s new tablet — can you really see Samsung undermining the future success of its Orion / Exynos chip by using a competitor’s hardware? Then again, weirder things have happened.

Samsung’s Lee Young-hee was misunderstood, Galaxy Tab sales are ‘smooth’ not ‘small’

Samsung's Lee Young-hee was misunderstood, Galaxy Tab sales are 'quite smooth' not 'quite small'

The word “whoops” is probably a good place to start with this one. Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal ran a story quoting Samsung’s Lee Young-hee as stating that initial sales of the Galaxy Tablet were “quite small.” Turns out that wasn’t exactly the right adjective. As you can hear in the audio clip below, she actually said sales of the thing are “quite smooth,” just like the chins on most of our interns. This mix-up is being blamed on a transcript provided by Samsung, but rather than point fingers we’ll just smile ruefully, shake our heads, and go back to writing posts about robots and things. And the Galaxy Tab? Well, sales may be moving right along, but it looks like returns are progressing quite smoothly as well.
