Confirmed: Lenovo LePad headed to US in 2011

Lenovo led us to believe that our LePad chances weren’t terribly good, but CEO Yang Yuanqing recently told the Wall Street Journal that the Android tablet is indeed slated for a 2011 US launch. Though Lenovo’s COO Rory Read was pretty clear that the LePad wouldn’t ship stateside until a tablet-ready version of Android was ready to go, it seems the company’s now confident that Google will deliver the goods. However, our gain is apparently China’s loss, as the publication reports that the slate’s been pushed into 2011 (as opposed to this December) in its country of origin as well. What’s a multinational computer corporation to do?

Sylvania’s 7-inch Android tablet now ready to disappoint, swallow your $180

Not down with coughing up serious cash for a serious Galaxy Tab? Great news, Bargain Ben: you’ve got options. Joining the raft of cut-rate, low-priced tablets is a new one from Sylvania, which is humorously described as a “7-inch MID tablet.” Details are scarce, but it’s rocking Android 2.1, an 800 x 480 screen resolution, six-hour battery, 512MB of RAM, 2GB of Flash memory, front-facing camera and a microSD card slot. You’ll also get 802.11b/g WiFi, a pair of mini-USB sockets, HDMI output and what we’re assuming is a resistive touchpanel. We’d say the chances of Android Market access are slim to none, but for just $179.99, who really cares if it functions?

[Thanks, Braden]

New Palm device codenames revealed in webOS 2.0 code?

Had any doubts that HP would deliver multiple new phones? Here’s a little something that should make you slightly less unsure. Homebrew hub WebOS Internals spent last week digging through SFR’s webOS 2.0 build for the Palm Pre 2, and surfaced with the names Broadway, Windsor, Mantaray and Stingray, as well as the Roadrunner you’re likely already familiar with. More telling, these five codenames appeared in a string designed to display the message “temporarily not restoring logs for newer devices,” meaning they’re all very likely as fresh as can be. Let’s hope we can pin them to some fancy new hardware before the year is through.

Indamixx 2 Atom-powered MeeGo tablet touts rockstar looks, $999 price tag

Indamixx — get it?! — may be a relative dark horse in the race to tablet supremacy, but those looking for something a touch outlandish can’t possibly ignore the company’s latest. The self-titled Indamixx 2 slate has just recently broke cover, with a prototype boasting Intel’s single-core 1.66GHz Atom N450 (a dual-core chip is slated to hit the finalized version), 2GB of RAM, a trio of USB 2.0 ports, a VGA output, Ethernet socket and analog audio input / output jacks. There’s no exact word on the screen size or resolution, but the kicker is the software — this guy’s loaded with Transmission 5.0, a music-centric OS that’s actually built around MeeGo.

The creators say that they chose MeeGo due to its fondness of multitouch inputs, and based on the videos we’ve seen of it running, it definitely looks like a wise choice. Moreover, those looking to use this for more traditional tasks will be thrilled to know that they still can, and considering that it’s Linux underneath, the limits are near-endless when it comes to tweaking options. For those in no position to wait for the final build, you can hit the source link in order to snag “beta hardware” for $999; we’re hoping that those who wait will be treated to far more sensible pricing, but there’s no question that we’re intrigued either way. Hop on past the break to see this bad boy get down.

OLPC XO-3 debut delayed till February as the quest continues for an ‘unbreakable’ screen

You’ll read about many a wonder at CES this January, but you can cross the OLPC XO-3 off the list — One Laptop Per Child founder Nicholas Negroponte told PC World that the slate’s debut has been pushed back roughly 45 days, until the middle of February instead. Whether the Marvell Moby-based tablet turns out to be a sexy, paper-thin device or a chunky contraption wasn’t discussed, but Negroponte did have a simple explanation for the delay — he needed a suitable surface to cover that probable Pixel Qi touchscreen. “The issue has been really finding an unbreakable material,” he said, hinting that “it may be glass or some flavor of glass,” rather than plastic as originally planned. Might we suggest a taste test at the Corning laboratories, Mr. Negroponte? We hear they have a Gorilla that does quite nicely. Video after the break.

Creative’s 7- and 10-inch ZiiO Android tablets get the hands-on treatment

They’re cheap, they can’t access the Android Market and they’re rocking resistive touchscreens. They’re the two newest devices from the lairs at Creative, and the folks over at PCPro were able to spend a few quality minutes with both the 7- and 10-inch ZiiO slates. They noted that the ZiiLabs ZMS-08 processor managed to handle the Android 2.1 load quite well, and while they definitely would’ve preferred a capacitive, multitouch display, they… managed without one. Hit the source link for a few more impressions and glamor shots, but don’t go in expecting a Galaxy Tab killer or anything.

Archos 70 Internet Tablet now shipping for $279 with 8GB storage, Android 2.2

Archos wasn’t going to settle for shipping a single Android device out today, no sirree — the French PMP specialists are pumping out these 7-inch Archos 70 Internet Tablets effective immediately. $279 buys you a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 8GB of flash storage, and Android 2.2 running on an 800 x 480 capacitive multitouch screen, with an OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics accelerator, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and a front-facing VGA camera in an 11oz, 0.43-inch thin package that screams to be held. Sadly, you still won’t find Android Market on here, though we’ll give Archos credit for ditching most of the proprietary connectors and ports, which should make sideloading your own apps somewhat less of a chore. (There’s also a microSDHC card slot.) Expect a 250GB hard-drive model to debut any day now for $350… along with our full review.

[Thanks, androidboi]

LG H1000B Windows 7 tablet emerges at FCC, mystifies in almost every way

Based on design alone, it’s safe to say that the inscrutable device shown above isn’t the UX10 we peeked at Computex nor the Android-based Optimus Pad… unless, of course, LG’s hardware engineers have tweaked the enclosure rather significantly. According to a filing that just popped up in the FCC’s database, the H1000B tablet will eventually hit the US market with 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth and a copy of Windows 7, and we’re also hearing that an SD card reader is likely around the edges. The downward sloping front makes us wonder if this thing isn’t cut out for some sort of dock, but it’s not like a peripheral port is jumping out at us, either. Our bets are on a CES 2011 debut, but here’s hoping things materialize a bit quicker for you last-minute holiday shoppers.

Creative Ziio 7- and 10-inch Android tablets say ‘me too’

Somewhere in the world, Creative just announced a pair of 7-inch (480 x 800) and 10-inch (1024 x 768) Ziio tablets running the Android 2.1 OS. Both feature a ZiiLabs ZMS-08 processor, Bluetooth 2.1 EDR, WiFi 802.11b/g, and microSD expansion. They’re slated to ship in December with the 7-incher costing €229 (8GB) or €259 (16GB) and the 10-incher demanding €289 (8GB) or €319 (16GB). And somewhere, somebody must be jonesin’ for these resistive touchscreen tablets (China?), just not here.

[Thanks, Yutaka]

ViewSonic G-Tablet pops up in Sears weekly ad, mistakenly claims to be the ViewPad 10 at Sears’ website

Did ViewSonic’s 10-inch tablets catch your eye? We’ve got good and bad news. The good news is that the G-Tablet (with a 1GHz processor and Android 2.2) is now on sale at Sears for $379.99 — even less than we were told. The bad news is that the Intel Atom N455-powered ViewPad 10 apparently is, too. We say apparently because Sears seems to have crossed some wires when putting the latter slate up on its site, most egregiously stating that that dual-booting device does both Windows 7 and Android 2.2 for the exact same $379.99. Last we heard, the ViewPad 10 — like the eerily similar Tega v2 — could only do Android 1.6 alongside Microsoft’s OS and would cost quite a bit more. Don’t rely on Sears to cut you a deal, folks.
