Sony’s Howard Stringer confirms Honeycomb tablet in US by summer (update)

Ready to taste a sweet Honeycomb tablet with a Sony twist? You’d better be — Japan’s Nikkei is quoting Sony chief executive, Sir Howard Stringer, saying that the company’s first Android 3.0 tablet will be on sale by the end of summer. Better yet, it’ll pop for retail in the US first, according to the report. This lines up nicely with the reported September launch of a PlayStation Certified Tegra 2 “S1” tablet featuring a 9.4-inch display and unique “wrap” design that we first told you about back in February. Or will it be the S2 clamshell? Who knows, Howard isn’t saying. The new tablet tattle was apparently uttered at the same event where Howard spilled the beans about Apple’s plan to use Sony sensors. Come on Howie, quit the teasing and just come out with it you saucy Welsh minx.

Update: Sony told Japanese site AV Watch that it will release the tablet before the end of this year. It’s unclear if the comment relates to the domestic Japanese model or if it’s meant to temper expectations after the company’s rogue CEO spoke out of turn. Regardless, it’s coming.

Acer’s 7-inch Iconia Tab A100 priced at £300 in UK, launching April 20th

Boy oh boy, these Taiwanese companies are seriously gunning to take the bottom out of the Honeycomb tablet market. After we saw ASUS stride forward with very competitive pricing on its 10-inch Eee Pad Transformer, we’re now being treated to Acer’s riposte, an eminently reasonable £300 ($483) price tag attached to its 7-inch Iconia Tab. Nothing is really skimped on here, you get the dual-core Tegra 2 and Android 3.0 one-two punch of hardware and software that’s become so popular lately, and of course the RAM is 512MB, not KB as indicated on Amazon’s listing. Perhaps the 8GB of storage will be a little on the light side, but given the price, we consider that a most forgivable shortcoming. Amazon notes the release date as April 20th in the UK and we doubt the rest of the world will have to wait much longer either.

HP’s Zeen tablet gets Android 2.2 Froyo update, finally (video)

If you decided to throw good judgement out the window and buy an HP Photosmart eStation just for the tablet, let us start by saying we told you so. Now that we have that squared away, it looks like there could be hope for HP’s Android-powered slate yet — reports are starting to roll in of a long awaited Android 2.2 update for the Zeen. For months, owners of the tablet have filled HP customer service forums with complaints about the promised, but never delivered update, but as you can see from the video below, Zeen owners can now download a beta version of Froyo complete with Flash-compatibility, and from what we’ve heard, it’s a huge improvement. If you must see it for yourself, check out the video after the break, but let us issue yet another warning: the audio in this video will creep you out.

[Thanks, Zac]

HTC confirms Flyer tablet will get Honeycomb… sometime

HTC hasn’t said much on the subject of Honeycomb for its Flyer tablet since its big announcement back at Mobile World Congress, where it said it chose not to use the OS for the tablet because it didn’t have enough time to customize it with its Sense UI. It’s now finally chimed in on the matter again, however, and replied to a question on Twitter by saying that it “will be offering a Honeycomb upgrade when it’s made available.” Of course, that statement’s noticeably lacking a specific date (or even a hint of one), and it may well be wise to not hold your breath for an upgrade anytime soon given Google’s recent talk of a tighter grip on Honeycomb. Still, it looks like it’s definitely still on the table as far as HTC is concerned.

[Thanks, Lewis]

Caption Contest: Russian prez is impressed by iPad 2

In non-Soviet Russia… presidents tend to receive some pretty swanky high-tech gifts. Dmitry Medvedev, leader of the good people of Russia and one of the few men to successfully rock denims with a suit jacket, has been bestowed with a fresh new iPad 2 and his facial expression seems to suggest he was immediately irradiated with blasts of magic, fairy dust, and the smiles of innocent children from across the world. We just hope he hasn’t seen the crummy camera yet, he is something of a tablet photography connoisseur.

Darren: “Why, lookie there! I can see Alaska from my iPad 2!”
Joe: “I can’t believe I’m playing chess with Gary Kasparov!”
Jose: “I wonder if Barack also likes to play Risk on his iPad.”
Josh F.: “See? The cat is talking but he’s saying ‘has’ instead of ‘have!'”
Don: “Kickin’ in the front seat, sittin’ in the back seat, gotta make my mind up, which seat can I take?”
Tim: “Look, it already has Words with Comrades installed!”
Vlad: “And this has push notifications for when Mr. Putin has instructions for me, yes?”
Richard Lawler: “10,000 apps and it’s still cheaper than buying the New Jersey Nets.”
Myriam: “And so if I tap here, it opens the door to the shark tank… and over here are the laser controls. Cool, eh?”
Richard Lai: “Hullo Anna!”

New Acer will be more like Apple, less like HP

The details behind the rift that saw Acer’s CEO Gianfranco Lanci (pictured) suddenly resign yesterday are now starting to emerge. Simply put, Acer’s board wants the Taiwanese company to be more like Apple and HTC, according to Bloomberg, raking in big profits on fat margins. Lanci’s approach, however, was to aggressively increase volumes and using its scale to negotiate cheaper prices from suppliers in a race to steal market share from Dell and HP. According to data compiled by Bloomberg, Acer’s profit margin in the last fiscal year was just 2.3 percent compared to Apple’s 21.5 percent. Daunting, to say the least.

With Lanci gone, JT Wang, Acer’s chairman and temporary CEO, plans to put more effort into expanding its smartphone and tablet business while broadening efforts around enterprise sales. For Wang, Lanci’s departure marks a break with the past, saying, “Recently the iPad [tablet computer] and other new form factors have had a very big impact on the PC market. We have to change our business strategy.” While PCs will still be core to the business, Wang said “we won’t be in a hurry to change to become the world number one.” Unfortunately for Acer, its brand is more closely associated with low-cost laptops than with the premium devices required to significantly expand its profit margins. We’d wish ’em luck but we think Acer will be better served by an innovative CEO and focused R&D.

Time Warner removes channels from iPad app while Cablevision prepares one of its own

Time Warner Cable was the first party to blink in the battle with programmers over its new live TV streaming TWCable TV iPad app, removing channels from Viacom, Fox and Discovery. The company’s official statement indicates its merely choosing to focus on the “enlightened programmers” who support its cause and that it will provide replacement channels (maybe BBC America, since it’s in all the screenshots) ASAP, possibly as soon as tomorrow. Expect the legal fight to continue to heat up between Time Warner, which believes it has obtained all the rights necessary to provide these channels on any screen in a customer’s home, and the programmers, that think it hasn’t.

Throwing more gasoline on the fire is word from Cablevision that its new iPad app with TV and video on-demand access was supposed to be out already and is merely awaiting Apple’s approval before it launches. According to the Wall Street Journal it will go forward launching the Optimum Link — formerly PC to TV Media Relay — product that brings video from their PC to the TV tomorrow. Check out the list of pulled channels after the break or on Time Warner’s blog, we’ll let you know when or if anything changes.

HTC Video Reveals Hot Android Tablet Details

Taiwanese electronics manufacturer HTC will soon debut its own Android-powered tablet. From the looks of a new promotional video, it could be a strong competitor in a very crowded market.

Dubbed the Flyer, HTC’s tablet will come equipped with accoutrements similar to most other Android tablets — 5-megapixel back facing camera, 1.3-megapixel front facing camera, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth support — and a number of details not so common. The Flyer will run on a powerful 1.5-Ghz processor, backed by a full gig of RAM. The tablet will also support Adobe Flash and HTML5.

Most attention-grabbing is HTC’s inclusion of a stylus pen with the Flyer, the first of the Android tablets to have such an item. The video details some of the features made possible by using the stylus, including note-taking abilities on documents and web pages, the ability to put your John Hancock on electronic documents and an MS Paint-like application for the artistic crowd. While we don’t know how well the stylus hardware will work with the Flyer, its inclusion will certainly differentiate the tablet from its already existing competitors.

HTC has not set an official release date for the tablet, but reports say we should expect to see hardware by the summer.

Sprint dropping Galaxy Tab to $200 on contract starting April 3rd

An early prank this isn’t. Based on our sources (and the pictorial evidence above), Sprint’s fixing to whack a full Benjamin from the current $299.99 asking price on its Samsung Galaxy Tab starting on Sunday, making it one of the more affordable ways to get your hands on a 3G-enabled tablet of any kind — let alone a Froyo-based slate that’s received its fair share of compliments. Granted, the original Tab is aging at this point, and we still aren’t sure we’d be down for selling our cellular soul for two years just to get a spiffy up-front discount, but hey — at least you know the option awaits you. Oh, and if spending $429.99 sounds a lot better than $199.99 in addition to 24 months of obligation, that’ll apparently also be possible.

[Thanks, Anonymous]

HTC Flyer parades its many unique qualities in latest video from the company

Android tablets, everyone‘s got one, but none are quite like HTC’s 7-inch Flyer. Built out of a single piece of aluminum and a great many chunks of silicon, it struts along at a 1.5GHz pace, carries a handy dandy capacitive stylus called Scribe, and offers up a tablet-ified version of HTC’s Sense skin on a 1024 x 600 display. It’s also the only portable of its kind (so far) to offer the OnLive cloud gaming service. So many features, you’d think someone would go to the effort of summarizing them, perhaps in the form of a stylish video, no? Well, HTC has done exactly that, and its latest product overview vid is embedded for you just after the break.
